Friday: California? Florida? CaliFlorida!

Hello HJC, happy Friday to you. I've had a great week of watching some excellent hockey. I really enjoyed the Winter Classic, and have been enjoying the World Juniors. Time of from school, and hockey games starting in the morning here on the West Coast means that I get to kick back and watch a ton of hockey. Here is my schedule for tomorrow (the last Saturday of Winter break for me, and none of my roomates are home yet, so I have the couch to myself!):

10:00 AM (PST) - Canada vs Finland (World Juniors)

Once that is over, I will be watching a recording of Arsenal vs. Tottenham (English Premier League Soccer... Come on You Gooners!)

4:00 PM (PST) - Leafs vs. Rangers

7:00 PM (PST) - Canucks vs. Kings

10:00 PM (PST) - Hold my head in shame at being on the couch for 12 hours straight.

Does anyone else have an outrageous sports watching schedule planned for this weekend?

Don't let yourself succumb to the same level of shame about not voting! take 30 seconds to shoot an email to Ryan. Also, there are some amazing opportunities here at HJC. We have the Pioneers Jersey comp going on, and if you are so inclined there is an opportunity to join the ranks of the HJC writers!

COTW Dec 23-29 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Delaware Pioneers Jerseys (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Before I get to the rest of the post, I am again going to announce that I will be hosting a HJC meet-up in Vancouver on Heritage Classic weekend. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in meeting up! You can find me on Facebook (I post pretty often on the HJC page, under my real name COLIN MAY). Also, you can send Ryan an email and he will forward it to me. I am looking forward to the game, and to meeting some
                           of you fine individuals!

Today's Concepts:

Anaheim Ducks - Dallas K.

I like the return to Jade and Eggplant for the Ducks, and these jerseys are executed well. My one gripe here is with the colour balance. There is no noticeable Jade on the white sweater, and it really pops on the purple sweater. It would also be good to get the duck mask logo on the shoulders, and some TV numbers. 7/10.

Arizona Coyotes - Dallas K.

I like the merging of the Hartford Wolfpack logo with the Coyotes wordmark here, it looks good. Anatomically, I am not sure what the differences are between Wolves and Coyotes, so I don't know how well that logo works for the Yotes. Introducing green again seems like a step back for me, The Coyotes colour scheme works well right now, but these sweaters do call to mind the famous original Coyotes sweater and colour scheme (without going over the top). 7/10.

St. Peter's University Peacocks - NCAA - Jake88

I really love the Peacock blue in the colour scheme. All in all, really nice sweaters, which would work well for any college. I can't say that I'm a huge fan of the logo, it just seems too crowded, and more like an academic seal than a sports logo, but that is the school's fault, not the designer's. 7.5/10.

Philadelphia Flyers - TGB Dezign

A solid vintage inspired set here for the Flyers. I like the presence of the black on the light jersey, and the orange on the dark sweater, but it is a shame that they aren't present together. The TV numbers are applied incorrectly (they would read 55, not 5 in this case). A solid start here. 7/10.

Quebec Nordiques - Christian L.

The sleeve striping here is cool. I like the subtle silver stripe in side the white stripes here. Very cool. The rest of the jersey seems a bit too busy. The shoulder patches and TV number are too big and make the arms feel cluttered. Same with the NOB and Numbers (Having the name plate cut into the coloured side panels does not work). If you worked with those arm stripes on a simpler jersey (no off-colour side panels, yoke piping, huge logos and numbers) it could look really good. 6/10.

Pittsburgh Penguins - Stadium Series - Dylan W.

I really like what Mr. Wonka has done with the gold tips on the collar and yoke, this looks really cool, and fits well with the Penguins logo. But, this innovative design on the upper region of the sweater does not necessarily fit well with the arm striping. Something more angular would work a lot better in my opinion. 8/10.

Anaheim Ducks - Stadium Series - Dylan W.

I like the yoke design here, and how well the striping pattern calls back to the old Mighty Duck uniforms. One thing I don't like is the silver stripe on the arms and hem. I get that it is trying to mimic the chrome effect, and it does make it look shimmery, but I think it would be better if it was simply gold. 8/10.

Tampa Bay Lightning - Stephen T.

A good throwback design here for the bolts. I always liked those numbers. A good simple striping design, and the TAMPA BAY on the back hem looks good here, same with the piping. I am not a fan of the socks for the light jersey... I think the white should be on the top. 7/10.

San Jose Sharks - Stephen T.

Really not that different from the unis the sharks used from 2007-2013 (aside from the additional yoke outline). The orange pops well on the white sweater, but is lost a bit on the teal sweater. Getting that colour balance a bit more even, would make these better, also stepping out from behind the creative shadow of those 07-13 Sharks unis would be a good idea... these are just too similar. 6/10

Oakland Golden Seals - Caleb F.

These just look fantastic. Great simple striping design. I also like how the GOLD does not change location or emphasis on these sweaters, the green and white simply switch places and make these sweaters match perfectly. Great Job. 8.5/10 and a COTW nom from me.

Well, that's it for me today, now all I have to do is put the beverages in the fridge, and make sure there is pizza in the freezer to cook up tomorrow. Here's to the weekend, and the great hockey that will be watched. Hope you enjoy your weekend, and you know you'll enjoy it more if you have voted and submitted your competition entries, and writer applications! See Y'all next week. Same time. Same place.
