Thursday: A Little Rushed
I'm going to apologize in advance, as this post may not be as long, detailed and researched as I would have liked. Being slammed this week with homework, presentations, meetings, and job interviews has left me with little time to devote to the blog this week, but I'll do my best to have a good, enjoyable post today, and promise to do better next week.
Now then...
So you may have heard about this little competition we're doing; and by little, I mean probably the biggest in HJC history. The Pairs Competition has just about wrapped up its presentation stage, with voting beginning soon. As one of the competition's designers, I think I can speak for everyone by saying how important your votes will be, as well as your feedback and thoughts which you can share right now in the comments section of each presentation day's post.

Yay: Justin captures the essence of two Kings eras (3 kinda, if you separate early 90's and present), having the 2000's logo and jersey style with the black, white and grey colour scheme. I think this is a brilliant idea that is executed well, looks great, and would be a believable jersey for the Kings to use down the road.
Nay: I could be wrong, but the logo looks a little elongated compared to normal. But even if that is not the case, it does look just a little big for the front of the jersey, and should be shrunk a few pixels. The "LA KINGS" text at the bottom is just as cool as always, which it never was. The Burger King logo on the shoulders is alright, but the purple stands out, and it shouldn't, so maybe grey or black should be used to look consistent.
Overall: Good job combining the two/three eras. Definitely believable, but not quite perfect. 7.9/10
NYCFC Concept - Phil B.
Yay: Here we see a soccer-turned-hockey concept for a team that hasn't played a game yet. Along with Orlando City FC (remember that), they intend on beginning play in 2015. Phil uses Manchester City's colours and look, and while the possible logos just released have killed this concept's colour combination and logo style, it's still a cool adaptation of Man City's look.
Nay: I'm not really a fan of the arm stripes that end halfway, when the upper half of the arm is the same colour as the lower half. It just looks incomplete to me. Also, to be totally nitpicky, I think the main number on the back should be moved down a few pixels.
Overall: I'd be curious to see what a full set looks like, but this concept is pretty solid on its own. 7.5/10
Orlando City FC - Phil B.
Yay: The aforementioned Orlando City FC is the next team we'll see today, again designed by Phil Beck. Unlike the previous concept, Phil has a logo to work with that will be used by the team. The jersey has a really unique, yet retro look to it, something I always like to see.
Nay: "Vintage white" makes sense to use here, as it is a main colour of the logo. White on the numbers also makes sense, as well as the more rounded font, as it matches the logo. However, the "vintage white" makes the "pure white" number pop out and become distracting. I think using pure white for the majority of the stripes of the jersey would be better, while keeping "vintage white" as a highlight colour.
Overall: Really interesting design; and while it isn't the most visually appealing, simple changes could fix that. 7.8/10
Czech Republic vs Slovakia Outdoors Concept - Stephen T.
Yay: Stephen proposes a very interesting matchup, an IIHF outdoor game between Czech Republic and Slovakia. The idea itself is fantastic, and judging from previous outdoor games in places like Croatia, this game would surely be a huge success. The jerseys are interesting, having a nice retro style to them, and looking great in both colours.
Nay: Since the jerseys are the same, minus primary colours, this game will look like a Czechoslovakia reunion, or at least a Czechoslovakian All-Star game. Nobody wants that. Instead, these teams would want to show themselves off as individually as they can, with their own unique styles. As far as the jerseys themselves go, they're done well, besides the red outline on blue getting a little lost, and same going for the blue stripes on the red jersey.
Overall: Very intriguing idea, but not a great visual matchup for these two individual countries. 7.6/10
MLB AL East Concepts - David P.
Yay: This is a pretty awesome series of concept, and this is probably the best division to use for this type of crossover. 3 of these cities are classic NHL cities, 1 is a very relevant NHL city today, and one has a very distinct WHA look to go with. For the sake of matching these teams with their NHL counterpart, the execution here is almost flawless. Great work.
Nay: If changes could be made to the jerseys themselves, I'd give Toronto a little more red, and Boston I'd rather see red than blue. Blue does make sense, but it just doesn't look right for the Red Socks to wear primarily blue. I also wish the Tampa Bay jerseys were way more interesting than the Lightning's current set.
Overall: I don't like all of the style and colour choices, but it is a very awesome concept with solid execution. 8.1/10
Buffalo Sabres Concept - Dylan W.
Yay: Here we have a very different, modern approach to the classic Sabres look. The logo gets a new makeover, and it helps give the team the real modern feel to it, as well as the funky but awesome arm style on the white jersey. The blue jersey doesn't drift far from the classic look, and it still looks as awesome and timeless as ever. As per usual for his work, execution is flawless and sharp.
Nay: However, I do have a few problems with it. The logo gets way too bloated with the buffalo and the swords, and the circle is pretty much lost behind it. Getting rid of the circle, or finding a different way to outline the rest of the logo, could help. Another thing I don't like is the centre "vertical" stripe on the arms. It cuts in at a different angle than the outer stripes, leaving a weird, curvy gap of non-stripe in the middle. I'm not sure if it was done on purpose, or why, but I think it just looks messy.
Overall: Very cool, unique look to a timeless classic, but not without its own faults. 7.8/10
Tampa Bay Lightning Concept - Caleb F.
Yay: Caleb brings us a pair of jerseys for the NHL's two Florida teams, the first being Tampa Bay. I'm not a fan of any Tampa Bay jersey besides their original. I'm not immediately a fan of this one either, but it compares well to other Tampa jerseys like it, so its a good design I can appreciate. The modern, edgy look of the Lightning isn't lost in this jersey, and the shoulder yoke outlines definitely give this enough Lightning to make this jersey believable.
Nay: But that same "outline" confuses me in its shape. It looks a little odd and distracting, and doesn't really serve any purpose on the jersey. Yes, they have lightning, and the jersey needs lightning, somewhere, but I don't think there is the answer. Also, the stripes are inconsistent in size and location on each arm, which is an extremely sloppy error to make.
Overall: Its not a bad design, but execution is weak, and I'm not sold on the "shoulder yoke outline things". 7/10
Florida Panthers Concept - Caleb F.
Yay: Part two of Caleb's Florida pair has the Florida Panthers in a very colourful 3rd jersey. Florida has worn a yellow jersey exactly ZERO times, and by following basic math principals, that is INFINITELY times too few. Heck, they even had a light blue jersey before a yellow jersey, like what is up with that? Anyways, before I get on a roll about that, I like the logo as it is, and the yellow-based jersey looks great.
Nay: There are two approaches to do a jersey like this, modern, or retro. The arms are all retro, but the low, single stripe hem makes it more modern, and the mix doesn't work well. My advise would be to either add red hem stripes, or remove red arm stripes, until satisfied. I'd also like to see some cuffs on the jersey, even if they're just small ones. Finally, since there is no white on the jersey, the white TV numbers look out of place.
Overall: Better than the Tampa concept, but only because it doesn't look plain, and I've never seen the Panther head isolated like that. 7.3/10
Cleveland Barons Concept - Dallas K.
Yay: We end today with a pair from Dallas K. This first concept is for the ill-fated Cleveland Barons. These jerseys loosely follow their actual jerseys, with some major changes. The main set's arm stripes are straightened and don't go right to the cuff, while a diagonal hem pattern is introduced. The logo on the main set is also separated, so the 'C' is the shoulder patch. The 3rd had different stripes, no yoke outline and no laces, but this and the main set look a lot more interesting than their actual set.
Nay: I'm not too sure if I like the main set's arms to end like that, or if they'd be better going all the way to the cuff. I think it just looks clunky as is, but I could be wrong. I'd like to see a red yoke with white outline on the black jersey, to match the white jersey. I think it would look better with a yoke instead of without. The 3rd's TV numbers should be moved down the arm a bit.
Overall: Another cool modern twist on an old classic. Apart from some changes, I like it! 8/10

Now onto today's concepts:
Los Angeles Kings Concept - Justin S.

Philadelphia Flyers Concept - Dallas K.
Yay: Why haven't I seen this kind of jersey yet? It's painfully simple and obvious, but perfect in every way. I'd love if the Flyers did this exact thing in their next outdoor game, as it properly touches base with their history, and keeps true to their style. I'm not quite sure how to describe this jersey, other than "shut up and take my money"!
Nay: While I'm drooling all over this concept, there are a few changes I would make. I like how the stripes are matching on each arm and the hem, as it is something I always like to see, but I wonder if adding one more stripe on each would help capture the Quakers jersey style just a little better. I'd also like to see some black cuffs at the end of the arms. While I previously complained about the TV numbers being so high in the last concept, I think they work in this case as is.
Overall: Fantastic concept, and I really want to see this for real in an outdoor game, or permanent 3rd. 8.9/10

I guess I saved the best for last, as I'm giving Dallas K.'s Flyers Concept my COTW nomination today. There were a few good concepts, but the decision was pretty easy for me. Having said that, I'm sure some of you will disagree, so please nominate your favourite!

Flyers jersey is VERY "shut up and take my money". Love it!
Justin's Kings logo isn't wrong actually....

It's the version they use when they embroider the logo on smaller objects such as hats. Its stripped of a lot of the details so it's easier to embroider.
I don't think it's the best choice to use it, it's not the best version of the logo but there's definitely nothing wrong with it.
