Thursday: It's Over Already???
Hey gang! Plenty to talk about today, including hyping up the next round of the HJC Open...
Wait, it's over? Bummer, it feels like it just got started.
What is generally the biggest competition of the year (although the Grand Rapids competition going on now is probably even bigger) has now come and passed. There were some great concepts through every round of the tournament, and the two finalists were well deserved. In the end, Dylan W. took the competition with his awesome Hurricanes concept beating out Justin's unique Winnipeg concept. Congrats to everyone involved on producing some fantastic work, and especially to Dylan for once again showing why he's among HJC's elite designers.
So what now? Well the fun has just begun this month at HJC, as we're still running the Grand Rapids Griffins competition, which will last all month long. If you haven't been paying attention, I'll summarize the competition quickly: Design the best Griffins concept, and they'll wear it in game! You'll also get a copy of your designed jersey. Motivated now? Great, so get working on those concepts!
Wait...how about work on them AFTER reading this post, and AFTER submitting your COTW vote? All it takes is a few minutes to email in your COTW vote, and determine who's concept reigns supreme for the week.
Speaking of which, lets see if we have any COTW contenders today:
Team Alberta Concept - Zack W.
Yay: Go Alberta! Even though I moved to Alberta from BC 5 years ago, I'm only recently referring to myself as an Albertan. I'm proud of my adopted province, and would proudly represent it in a uniform such as this. The striping pattern, taken from the shield on Alberta's flag, is really cool, and I think the colours all work well together. I don't like how the yoke looks, but I can admire the effort.
Nay: I think the shield/logo in front is too big, and thus makes the chest stripes too thick. The stripe pattern is cool, but it looks like you used a paintbrush tool to draw them, and the stripes are either leaking off of the jersey or not quite reaching the edge, making the concept look very amateurish. The number on the back is way too big, the name is a little small, the captains patch is definitely too small, and the font for all three of those is way too curvy and strange for a hockey jersey.
Overall: The concept needs lots of work, but I love the design you're going for. 6.5/10
Buffalo Sabres Concept - Nate F.
Yay: In an effort to one-up their newest 3rd jersey (the bar is set extremely low), Nate creates a new alternate for the Sabres, going with a grey jersey. I notice lots of different Sabres logos combined into the design, which is a cool approach. The striping pattern is simple, as it should be. The colours aren't new to the Sabres uniforms, but a grey and yellow dominated uniform is something totally different from what they have, and I like it.
Nay: This template is awesome for high-quality, polished concepts, but very difficult for novice designers or designers that don't use Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. The curves, shadows and edges make it extremely difficult to fill the concept in without leaving loose pixels, which is exactly what we see here. Beyond that, The "B" looks a little too large for the rest of the "uffalo" word mark, the shoulder patches look really big, and the yellow outline on the name really makes it hard to read.
Overall: I like the grey uniform and yellow pants combo, but that's all I can really take from this concept. 6.5/10
Philadelphia Flyers Concept - Phil B.

Yay: Phil's "Hockey 2 Soccer" set returns today with 3 new concepts, the first being for the Flyers. The Flyers are a very simplistic, traditional looking team with their uniforms, and this concept definitely fits into that mould. I love the curved arms design, matching the style of their current jerseys, but toning down the white so black dominates the uniform. It's a great look, and realistic for both the Flyers and for a soccer uniform in general.
Nay: But... I still would like to see just a little more white on the uniform, maybe just making the little stripe of white that is on there a little bit thicker. I'd also like to see black on the socks. There is more white on the socks than anywhere else on the uniform, which doesn't really balance the colours well in my opinion.
Overall: Probably my favourite concept of this set so far. 8.3/10
Ottawa Senators Concept - Phil B.

Yay: Next is a soccer concept for the Senators. Phil focussed on the "heritage alternate", and I think that's a bold but awesome choice. I'm not aware of too many 3-coloured "barber-pole" designs in soccer, but this would definitely stand out. It has the Senators vibe all over it, and the design of the patches, stripes, and equipment all make this a decent soccer kit.
Nay: I get that the stripes match up from front to back, but with so much more white on the back, it almost looks like two different uniforms. A different jersey look on the front and the back doesn't sound like a good idea; and if you don't believe me, you haven't seen the Buffalo Sabres alternate, have you? The number will be harder to see, but closing the gap on the stripes, and adding an outline to the number similar to the "O" logo would look better I think.
Overall: Very interesting, much barber-pole, so white back, wow. 7.5/10
New York Rangers Concept - Phil B.

Yay: Phil's last concept today is for the Rangers, and he sticks to a very simple, classic look; which suits the Rangers just fine. There is lots about this jersey that fits the classic Rangers style, and the colours are balanced as well as they should be. While I don't like this number font being used on a soccer jersey, I'm glad it's used here, as it's one of the most identifiable traits on the Ranger's uniform.
Nay: The only thing more identifiable on the Rangers jersey is the diagonal text, which I think could have been an awesome look. Diagonal text and stripes aren't a foreign idea on soccer uniforms, and I think this uniform would scream "Rangers" if it had diagonal text on stripes on the front. Obviously the sponsorship logo has to be straight, but it could have been where the Rangers logo is now. Also, I feel like the uniform in general is way too plain, and could use some more white and red, especially on the socks.
Overall: While most of these soccer concepts are trying too hard, I think this one doesn't try hard enough. It's a good concept, but bland, and has potential to be more interesting. 7.2/10
Colorado Avalanche Concept - J3
Yay: Next is a Colorado Avalanche 3rd by J3. Using a new logo and the Colorado flag, J3 creates a fresh, new look for the Aves, and I love it. The switch to light blue is interesting, but I think it works alright, as the blue is still dark enough to contrast with white. I'm a huge fan of the flag design on the arms. Execution is really spot-on with this concept, and overall it looks great.
Nay: I'm not a huge fan of this logo, and I'm glad Colorado used their current logo instead. This isn't your fault, and using this unused logo is definitely refreshing to see. I don't like the curved name on the back, and I think the shoulders look really bare without a yoke or patch to colour it up a bit.
Overall: It's a simple but refreshing twist to the Avs' look, but it's executed perfectly. 8.3/10
St. Louis Blues Concept - Brad M.
Yay: For today's grand finale, we have Brad and his St. Louis Blues alternate. Seeing the Blues in a jersey that isn't mainly blue or white is a very strange thought, but honestly this would be an amazing look for a 3rd jersey. The two different templates used show the uniform in perfect unison, and the design of this concept is like a yellow version of their original uniforms, and it's awesome in every way.
Nay: I love the design to death, but a few bits of execution are sinking it down. The logo and the hem stripes should be moved down some, and the captains patch should move a little down to create some "breathing space" between the letter and the yoke. The name on the back should be bigger, as well as the back number. As an aside, I really don't know how well this jersey would go over with fans, especially since division rival Nashville has a very similarly coloured jersey.
Overall: The execution short-falls are really making it difficult to give it a good score, but they're all little details, and the design is great. 8.5/10
I really wanted to vote for Phil's Flyers uniform as my COTW nominee, because I think that is the best concept so far on what has been a great set getting somewhat-mediocre scores. However, I simply can't deny Brad M.'s St Louis Blues concept as my COTW nominee. A yellow 3rd for the Blues would be perfect, especially if it looked classy and similar to this.

Hey I see adds on HJC, and they aren't annoying or in the way! I think this was a great decision, hopefully it will bring the site more money!
Agree with Kris. They don't bother me at all. Hopefully the money can help improve the site!
