Friday: A Dan Hinote Approved Post!
Welcome to the Friday Post!
If you're wondering why Dan Hinote approves of this post, I have no idea why, but it's the first hockey card sitting on my desk, so I'm sure if he were to read this, he'd like it!
So this week, let's talk about vintage apparel.
Last week, I talked about throwback jerseys, but what about everything else, hats, shirts, jackets, sweaters, hoodies, socks, plaques and such.
If you search up Hartford Whalers Jacket on NHL shop versus on ebay, you'll get two different results, sort of like Happy Days vs. the real 50's. Sure they both are about the same thing, but one is watered down to just show the good, while the other takes the bad with the good and let's you come to the conclusion yourself.
We'll use jackets as an example, since that's what I was looking at when I got this idea for this article.

Notice the difference? Obviously the jackets are not the same, exact style, but the question remains, which would you prefer? Do you go to thrift stores, second hand stores and ebay to find actual vintage apparel from teams and designs that no longer exist, or do you prefer the re-issues?

Also, the Grand Rapids Griffins contest's deadline is coming up. Think about it this way...I'm going leaving for Dalhousie in 11 days, 5 days after that, the deadline comes up, 16 days isn't a long time and this is THE contest to enter. This contest has REAL WORLD implications, with your design begin stitched in AHL fashion in front of thousands of people as the Griffins take on whoever they take on that night.

The RoboGulls do have a throwback vintage jersey, which looks pretty solid (who knew Miroslav Satan still played?) but Jake88 improves on the design, adding an even more vintage design. The striping is similar to a mix of the Rangers and the original Penguins script jerseys, which looks excellent. The colliers are balanced very well, and it's odd that though the logo doesn't make an appearance on the jersey, but it doesn't feel like it's missing anything. The front of the jersey is a little boring, which isn' terrible, but even having numbers on the front or a sublimated logo would spice things up, so there's less empty space (9/10)
Arizona Coyotes Concept (By Mike S.)
With rumours swirling around with the renamed 'Yotes will change their jerseys, while not this year, maybe next year, and most artists agree some sort of desert pattern would be appreciated. Mike does a solid job making a simple jersey, and using the full body logo to its best. The striping and square yoke look like a desert blanket, like the kind you'd find in the back if a '68 Ford pickup in the middle of Nevada. The numbers would be new to Arizona, but they look like San Jose's old font, and since they're division rivals, maybe not the best choice, but still looking good. Not sure about the Brick gear, black would make the beige POP! (9.25/10) COTW Nom from Me!
Calgary Flames Concept (By: Nate F.)
Think the NHL doesn't have enough grey? Don't worry, Nate is on a mission to give EVERY team a grey alternate, next stop Calgary. This is probably my favourite of Nate's series so far, and makes solid use of the Flames alternate logo. The concept isn't without errors though, while the design is good, its the execution that needs work. The number on the back and shoulder patch are too large, and the inside of the jersey should be red to match the yoke around the collar. The helmet logo, while it's good to see, isn't in the right spot on the helmet, and is just plastered above where the two parts of the helmet join. finally, since the alternate logo is heavy in black, having some black, even as a accent colour, would add more uniformity across the jersey. Pittsburgh Penguins Crossover Concept (By: Phil B.)

With that, we move back to Phil's soccer NHL crossover series, with 3 concepts today, the first for the Pens. I'm not sure where the idea for a sash came from, but it adds some uniqueness to this set it really needed. The different coloured arms are nothing new to soccer, but on the back, the one random gold sleeve doesn't match up, making both sleeves gold or continuing the sash around back would fix that. Phil fixes the font issue with this concept, though the name should be lower from the collar. Not much to complain about, though soccer jerseys do tend to have numbers on the pants, and adding that would add realism to this series. (7.5/10)

WHITEOUT BELONGS IN WINNIPEG. Now that I got that out of the way, next stop, Glendale! This would be the way to go for the Yotes as a football club, and even though the jerseys are quite simple, the whiteout theme keeps things unique. The font is a tad to small but because the jersey is so white, the font pops right off the jersey, so making it a tad larger would make an easy fix. The socks are just white socks, I have 3 pairs exactly like those ones, adding any brick would fix that. Add numbers to pants! (7.75/10)
San Jose Sharks Crossover Concept (By: Phil B.)

Phil adds to the orange and borrows from a classic European club football design for the soccer city of San Jose, but I'm not sure if this kit works well. The font is the right size, but its just the Coyotes font, bigger, use the Sharks old font if you don't want to use block font. Also, the sponsor's logo is too large, and distracts from the crest, which looks solid. This is another case where taking inspiration from the city's MLS franchise or past NASL franchise for inspiration would make this concept much better. Numbers on shorts and blank socks carries over from the last concept. (5.5/10)
Calgary Flames Concept (By: Zach W.)
Zach made what I think was his debut on HJC yesterday, so welcome to HJC, Zach. Nice work taking inspiration from the Leave a Comment section, and this concept has some serious potential. The execution needs a lot of work, but that will come with practice. The striping goes outside the template and is very Microsoft Paint like, even though paint has a function that will allow you to make straight and angled lines easily. If you're going to do angled arms, you'll have to change the stitching (grey lines) to match it, otherwise, the design would be printed on to the jersey, rather than stitched. Also, the arm striping and hem striping should match in colour profile, so picking either black or yellow as the main colour, but not having both not eh same jersey. Finally, the logo is very pixelated, you can shrink logos in Word if you're using paint to keep the logo looking crispy. I do really like the use of gold and the unique number style. Come back to this concept after some practice and I'm sure we'll see some improvement! Keep at it Zach! (4.75/10)
