TGIF!
Seeing as Caz has given his season predictions, I will give mine.
But first, how did I do last year?
Not good, but not bad. I got the Pacific division pretty close (predicted Vancouver doing poorly), and I got most of the obvious playoff teams. The Metro was correct, aside from Philly and the Islanders. Other divisions though, left more for me to be desired.
This year, I don't have a fancy graphic, just a list.
Eastern Conference
1. Boston Bruins
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
3. Montreal Canadiens
4. New York Rangers
5. Tampa Bay Lightning
6. Columbus Blue Jackets
7. Washington Capitals
8. Philadelphia Flyers
9. Ottawa Senators
10. New Jersey Devils
11. Detroit Red Wings
12. Toronto Maple Leafs
13. Buffalo Sabres
14. New York Islanders
15. Florida Panthers
16. Carolina Hurricanes
Bold Prediction: Despite having the ugliest 3rd jersey in the NHL, Tampa fights its way to the Conference Finals
Western Conference
1. Chicago Blackhawks
2. Colorado Avalanche
3. Anaheim Ducks
4. Los Angeles Kings
5. St. Louis Blues
6.Minnesota Wild
7. Dallas Stars
8. Phoenix Coyotes
9. Nashville Predators
10. Vancouver Canucks
11. Edmonton Oilers
12. San Jose Sharks
13. Calgary Flames
14. Winnipeg Jets
Bold Prediction: Jets get #1 overall pick and several prospects for current players, Sharks miss playoffs
Rookie Gems: John Gibson, Nick Ehlers, Michael Hutchinson, William Nylander, Sam Bennett, Jack Campbell
Cup Final: Colorado Vs. Boston
Winner- Colorado in 6
I guess as a mild disclaimer, any team between 11 and 7 I think could make it or not, but I'm much surer of 7 and 8, maybe 9.
Voting! Huh! What is it good for....a lot actually, so go do it!
How cool is it that another staple team of minor hockey is holding a contest through HJC to design an alternate? Seriously! How cool is that? You have until Halloween to give the Quad City Mallards a new look, so take your time, and really make this your best concept. After all, it very well could be!
On to the concepts!
Brandon Wheat Kings Concepts (By: Justin S.)
Purple is a colour missing in hockey, I've said it at least 5 times every post. The Wheat Kings could totally pull this look off! The purple and yellow are dark enough that they don't melt into each other, and the the logos look better in purple than they do black. The white jersey is the better of the two, as it is more original and has all 3 colours. The purple jersey is decent too, but it is just a copy of the Kings throwback jersey, and adding some white would look better, or have both jerseys be a copy. The numbers on the white jersey would look better purple. Solid concept though, looking forward to more, Justin! (8.5/10)
Kansas City Scouts Concepts (By: CPM)
Sports wise, it's great to be in KC! I really dig the Scouts identity, solid logo, solid jersey, just not a solid fan base. CPM modernizes the Scouts, fixing more of the problems with the original jerseys, as part of his NHL bright series. The striping resembles the original striping, but the colours are balanced much better, particularly on the white jersey. On the original, the blue jersey had very little white, while the white jersey was dominated by red. The new font is classic 70's though I would have kept the red yoke on the blue jersey. Also, and it's simply preference, but if you were to add gear to the look, using the KC on the helmet and pants would look fantastic. (9/10) COTW Nom from Me!
Colorado Avalanche Baseball Concepts (By: Christian L.)
The Rockies took the name from the NHL, so why not do the inverse and have the team take the sport. I think I'm in the minority on this, but I love the Avs script, and I'm stoked Christian used it on this concept. The jerseys are classic baseball, if the '96 Avs were to be part of that. The jerseys look solid, but the pants/socks I would work on. Maybe making the socks on both jerseys black would crossover more so, and as for the pants, light grey is commonly used on road jerseys. Still, this is another series to watch for more from. (8.25/10)
New York Islanders Concepts (By: Michael G.)
Has anyone seen the jumbotron at the Barclays Centre set up for hockey, it is cringe worthy but it'll change. This concept, while I like the idea, has the same colour balancing problem as the Flames concept I reviewed last week, though both jerseys are solid, I just would have made the blue jersey alternate. The white jersey is dominated by orange, and one would think the regular jersey would be orange with either white or blue arm bands. The lighthouse shoulder patch is a nice touch, but it's fed too big. The striping is a great pattern, it reminds me of the 80's Mets. (7.5/10)
New York Islanders Concept (By: Phil B.)
Phil, who in case you didn't know, LOVES the Islanders, but I can't remember the last Islanders concept I reviewed from him? Though to be fair, when was the last time I made a Jets concept. I didn't like the idea of the yoke and coloured arms, but with a minor change, it'd look fantastic. Getting rid of it would make a good concept, but if you got rid of the yoke outline and changed the shape of the yoke to either an angled shape or a square yoke. Everything else on the concept is solid, though having the Islanders logo on the helmet may be too many Islanders logos, use the script instead. Also, if Phil says the Islanders should adapt the lighthouse shoulder patch, then it should be done asap. (8.5/10)
New York Rangers Concepts (By: Michael G.)
Navy Blue suits the blue shirts more than their current shade of blue, but tradition is tradition. Using the Rangers logo on a jersey is pretty rare, it's only been done once, and not well, but it may be time for the Rangers to try again. The pattern all across the jersey remains classic Rangers but without the yoke stripes and a set of numbers that look like they would fit in a certain outdoor game. The shoulder patches are too big on this concept as well, but everything else is solid. Love the NY script on the away jersey. (8.25/10)

Sam Bennett will go back to junior. Johnny Hockey is the rookie to look out for.
I think Gaudreau and Monahan will end up being better than Toews and Kane, not this year, or next year, but soon.
Two Islanders points:
1: I think you are in for a rude awakening for the Islanders in the standings. The offense looks really good and goaltending un-Isles like (which is a really good thing, historically speaking). I do think they'll trade for Leddy and shore up the defense.
2: On my concept, yes, the Lighthouse patch needs to come back, so I modernized it from representing Montauk Point (three stripes) to Fire Island (four stripes, for obvious reason).
Phil: I really want the Islanders to do well, and in a couple seasons, they'll be a playoff team. As for now, I'm just not sure
And I second CPM's Scouts concept for COTW
Good prediction from Phil. Not only do they have Leddy, but they got Boychuck, too. Neither one is a perennial all-star, but this will really help in the defensively weak Metro division. Islanders definitely look more like a playoff team now.
