Friday: Two Four Concepts
TGIF
Houston Aeros Concepts (By: Mario A.)
Why isn't there much talk of hockey returning to Houston? The Aeros are such 70's hockey identity, but none the less, more WHA goodness from Mario. I'm a fan of this template, we haven't seen it in pro hockey since the '08 All Star Game, though I'm not sure if this is the place. Don't get me wrong, it looks decent, but it doesn't seem to be a Houston Aeros jersey. I get the idea of getting rid of the tealish blue and and third colour, but the stars, big block letters and AHL military theme would have all been good inspiration. As is, the font is the only thing that says "Houston Aeros". Along with that, the colours are not well balanced on the white jersey, and the numbers are far too down the back of the jersey and the name is too high. (5.5/10)
Denver Spurs Concepts (By: Mario A.)
I've been a fan of the Spurs look since seeing several concepts that showed the look could have worked. I may sound harsh by saying this, but, this looks lazy. There is no striping patter, just a paint bucket fill job, the numbers were done on Microsoft paint with a text font, the vector logo on the back should be the CCM or script logo. The logo on the black jersey has a weird white thing on the side, and I've seen Mario do much better. That's the biggest problem, Mario, you have so much potential and have been getting better, but this is a major step back. Don't take this as an attack, but work at it, take you time, and redo this concept. Hopefully, I review it and I get to tell you how good it is. (4/10)
Cleveland Barons Concepts (By: CPM)
Ah the Barons! Funny enough, for a team that only lasted two seasons, their identity has lasted and CPM makes a very simple but well made Barons concept. The white jersey remains relatively the same, but the red jersey swaps black for white on the yoke and cuffs. It looks better! The logo is also improved, it doesn't reek of 70's complexities and overly fancy outline of Ohio. One thing I would have changed is the numbers. I would have put the numbers in the yoke and given them a small outline. (8.25/10)
Quebec Nordiques Concepts (By: Patrik G.)
The day will come when we don't have to say "When the Nordiques return" and just "The new Nords". Until then, let's speculate! Patrik updates the Nordiques, while keeping the jerseys mostly the same. The Fleur de Lis are kept on the hem, but not on the yoke, which is an improvement. The addition of the striping fixes the one problem the Nordiques had. No longer do the arms just have cuffs and look like striped down Habs aways. The name on the back of the white jersey looks a fraction to big, and the roundel logo from the WHA days would make a decent alternate logo. (8.5/10)
Atlanta Thrashers Concept (By: Zach W.)
Seriously missing the Thrashers. Don't get me wrong, I love the Jets but Atlanta had a soft spot for me (it's the maroon). For sure the Thrashers needed a simplifying of their extensive colour scheme and eccentric jerseys, and something like this would have worked as an alternate (beats looking like the Falcons on skates). The striping manages to get all the major colours into one pattern without being overwhelming, thought the stripes are a little large not eh jerseys and high up not eh socks. The yoke shape is nice, but the shoulder patches need to be smaller and the outline to be less pixelated. The numbers and NOB are pixelated. This concept is close to being a winner, just needs some minor work. (6.25/10)
Arizona Coyotes Soccer Crossover Concepts (By: Brady S.)
Of the three soccer crossover series we've seen on HJC, Brady's has been the most direct crossover. If Arizona were a SC instead of an HC (soccer joke), then this is most likely what they would wear, and it's pretty close to the current jerseys, neither have hem striping. Execution is solid, though I would have gone with maroon socks on the home kit. The ad on the maroon jersey (which might I add, kudos for accuracy) would be more visible and have a soccer/footie vibe if it were larger. (8.75/10)
That's the post! Once again, I apologize for the lateness, trust me, it's not going to be a regular thing (it's 7:35 in Halifax as I finish this post, I know it's two hours late). Remember to vote, seriously, I'm doing it right now. Enjoy the weekend, and watch some hockey and GO JETS!
First off, my thoughts are with all the HJC readers in the Ottawa area. Obviously, this has been a rough week for you guys and my heart goes out to the solider who was sadly killed and to the brave responders who kept the city safe. To quote Bruce Arthur: "Except for one pathetic murderous asshole, it felt like a lot of Canada was, under awful circumstances, at its best today. Proud of that"
I apologize in advance for the lateness of this post, I really do! Extremely hectic day that couldn't have been much worse. Anyways, here's the post, but again, super sorry!
No real new jersey news, hockey season has been awesome so far! What do you guys this of the Islanders? Are they for real? Will this last?
What about the Hurricanes? How long until they get their first win?
Surprises? For me, it's been Calgary! They've played very well and are looking like the team from 10 years ago. Now, will they make the playoffs? No! However, is this the start of something new....probably.
Voting! Super Duper important this week. 3rd quarter voting ends TONIGHT! COTW voting continues and the also super duper important Quad City Mallards contest continues for another week.
If you haven't heard the news, it's HJC's 5th anniversary! Help give us a 5th anniversary logo and send in your designs. Ryan may use it.
3rd Quarter Vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW Oct 13-19 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Quad City Mallards Jersey Competition (ends October 31st)
HJC 5th Anniversary Logo (due this week)

I know it's early, but what did I say about the Islanders? If they can survive the yearly "No Win November" curse then this team is playoff bound.
Jets 96, I did a bad job on that Spurs concept on purpose. I wanted it to look terrible because the Spurs sucked, and that concept shows how much they sucked.
@Mari: There is a right was and a wrong way to do that. The concept appears that you got lazy and made it in 10 minutes. If you want to emphasizes the flaws with a look, that's fine. The execution is the problem.
