Monday: Bright No More

Hey there everyone! Hope you all had a good weekend! I know I did, and I know the site did. The site celebrated its 5th anniversary and we celebrated with a podcast! For those that didn't hear it or weren't aware of it, Ryan recorded a podcast with myself, Jets96, and Caden and kind of Caz but not Caz because internet reasons. If you haven't yet, I suggest you give it a listen. It would definitely help put a voice behind some of these posts.

So after a weekend of fun, let's get straight to business.

There's only three concepts in the COTW vote this week and I suggest you vote. Maybe for a certain Chicago Blackhawks concept but don't let me sway your vote... or maybe do........

Also, we have a new competition this week in the form of a CWHL ReDesign. So get your entries (And Votes) in by Friday night!

COTW Nov 17-22 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
CWHL ReDesign entries (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

What? You want concepts? Ok, here you go!

Phoenix Roadrunners Concept - Mitch B.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but there were 6 incarnations of this team over the years. And we haven't seen them since 2009, so why not make a comeback and play in the ECHL or something when they'll be looking for teams for the expansion NHL teams?

I'm not a fan of the stripes on the arms, they look off center and the thickness isn't uniform throughout the stripes. I also don't like colored side panels, but that's just me. There's an NHL shield on the collar insert, which should be gone unless this is intended to be an NHL concept. The name and number on the back are way too big. Scale those down and put some TV numbers on the sleeves. I also feel that overall, the jersey is too dark, especially the darker silver name and numbers on the back.

Rating: 5/10

Peterborough Petes Concept - Zach W.
The Petes recently ditched their classic jerseys for a set that features black. This set is somewhat similar to what they wear now. The jerseys look ok, pretty basic stuff here, but personally, I don't like the heavy outlines on the logo. I prefer the logo they used to use where the Petes was just one solid color and you could see the jersey color through the P and other letters. Also, the pants logo is way too big and should be the vintage white color so you can actually see it. I don't think the number font fits the team very well. One last thing, the OHL logo shouldn't be blue. It should be a team color that has contrast to the color of the jersey it's placed on.

Rating: 5.5/10

Quad City Mallards Alternate Jersey Concept - Joey F.
Joey shows us what it would look like if the Mallards picked his concept as the contest winner. The weight loss ad in the comments is funny. Speaking of Mallards, as far as I know, they have yet to announce a winner in the contest and they were supposed to do that on Friday I believe. I do know they recently unveiled a new orange alternate jersey of their own, so I wonder if they scratched the whole thing.....

Anyway... As for Joey's jersey, it reminds me too much of a boring "fashion" jersey that the NHL had on sale at one point. It looks a lot like a basic practice jersey. I think this jersey could be spiced up quite a bit. Plus, the Mallards shoulder patch is upside down on the back of the jersey and the inside of the jersey as seen on the front of the jersey is white. I think you've got a good foundation for something here, but it's not done yet. Some orange would be nice to see.

Rating: 6/10

Mighty Mach One - United States Air Force Academy Squadron Design Series - Rocky Mountain Concepts
A mix between two classic designs, the chest stripe and the arm length yoke. It looks good especially with the color scheme here. I feel like the logo on the chest is too low and the number on the back is too small. The "1" on the side of the helmet would look better placed on the front where the NHL puts their numbers. The IceBorn logo on the back should be white or yellow so you can see it. Also, if this is going to be a series, I think it'd be neat if every jersey had an Air Force patch on either the chest or shoulders.

Rating: 7.5/10

Team Canada Concept - Will S.
Pretty odd to see a Canada jersey without the leaf on the chest. The beaver looks nice though. I don't like the black Canada wordmark. I feel like there's not enough contrast to the red jersey. I like the jersey overall, nothing extraordinary though. One thing I'd do is make the arm stripes the same thickness as the hem stripes or vice versa. Also, maybe ditch the red stripe between the white and black. Personally, I think it'd look better.

Rating: 7.5/10

Nashville Predators Alternate Jersey Concept - Christian L.
Christian's idea for a Nashville alternate is pretty sharp. The five dark yellow stripes in the striping looks like they could be representing guitar strings, so maybe add one more and own it. The stripes on the pants are a super nice touch. As much as I'm liking this concept, I feel like there may be too much going on. I'd either ditch the dark yellow stripes in the yoke or just ditch the yoke altogether.

Rating: 8/10

Hampton Roads Rhinos Concept - Brights Series - Colin M.
We talked about it on the podcast the other day, and here it is, the end of Colin's Brights Series. I'm a bit sad to see this go, as this is one of the best series that I think has ever graced the pages of this blog. I hope you all join me in congratulating Colin on finishing this 40 concept series.

As for the concept itself, for those that don't know, the Rhinos were a proposed team back in the late 90's before the Whalers moved to Carolina. The color scheme looks like a mix of the Kings purple era and the Sharks minus the orange. The logo is pretty nice. I like seeing custom logos on the this site. I don't care for the jersey design very much but it goes with the logo nicely, so it works. I think the shoulder patches are too close to the collar, definitely move those down towards the end of the yoke.

Rating: 8/10 and once again Congrats Colin!!!

There you have it! The end of Colin's series and the end of Monday's post. Definitely check back everyday this week for new concepts as well as CWHL ReDesign entries, which hey... totally send some in. And while you're doing that, Vote Vote Vote for COTW COTW COTW!!!

I'll second Colin. The Brights Series has been very consistently top-notch. Great work!

Thanks for all the nominations and comments about the Brights Series, especially on the recent podcast. This was my first big redesign project so I'm happy you guys liked it. To answer Caden's question from the podcast, yes I designed them all in advance over the summer. The first one went up on the blog in late September, so it's been over two months now. All good things come to an end!

By the way Dylan, the colors for the Rhinos are that of the NBA Charlotte Hornets (purple, teal, silver) because George Shinn, owner of the original Hornets franchise, was the guy who was trying to get the Rhinos into the NHL.

Concept was for doing my own take on an idea I left in "Leave an Idea" way back on May 30th.

Jersey already came in that striping pattern as an uncrested Team Canada Prototype at River City Sports:
https://www.rivercitysports.com/US/details-06.cfm?sku=127566

Own the jersey and was trying to find concepts ideas so I could make crests/patches/numbers for the jersey and bring a concept to life.

Love to see others with some more ideas for this uncrested jersey.

Colin, regarding Shinn, I read about that earlier but didn't even put the source of the color scheme together in my head. That's pretty neat
