Monday: 3rd Time's the Charm
Hello everyone! It's the beginning of the week!
Round 3 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs began yesterday, and this first game yesterday was something. My Blackhawks lost 1-4 to the Anaheim Ducks, I felt hurt and defeated the entire time. BUT luckily my Ducks crushed the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. It was great, absolutely fantastic.
Yeah, this round is very confusing for me. It's just a bittersweet time in my life. This is the first time in years where I don't want one team to come out on top. I actually like every team in this round a lot! It's especially hard in the Eastern Conference because I love the Rags a lot, but I have the Bolts moving forward and a lot of money on the line. What a predicament, folks.
Anyway, as you may have noticed, we have a new contest going on! Plus, you can still surprisingly vote for all of last week's concepts as well! And, here's a real zinger, vote on what you thought the best COTW from April was!
Ain't this website just grand? We actually have our first pair of concepts for the IceCaps contest, and they seem to have very striking similarities.
Even though most people want the team to be the Las Vegas BLACK Knights, Daryl here has decided to remove the adjective and change the gold to tan for this concept.
Pros: All in all, your execution of patterns and designs are very solid. The striping patterns look absolutely stunning, and the inclusion of stars on the yoke are kind of cool. I don't know why, but I get a sort of Nordiques vibe from them, even though the fleur de lis were on the hem.
Cons: Alright, first things first. If this were an established team, I could say to myself "oh, this is just an alternate jersey," but since this team does not exist whatsoever, there's nothing to go off of here. In all honesty, I can't tell if this would be used as a home or away. Second, if you're going to include socks, include the rest of the equipment as well. Most of the time it's the pants that make or break the sock, and without them here it just looks confusing. I'm guessing the plan was black pants with a tan stripe and two grey stripes flanking it. If that were the case, then black sock is too much. Third, the font is just not fitting. The color tan invokes a sense of "vintage," but the font used here screams "modern." Fourth, you're forgetting a lot of essential elements. The TV numbers, shoulder patches, Reebok logo, not all of your pixels are filled in. Check under the armpits. Fifth, this concept just needs more thought. If the stars were running in one stripe, it would make sense, but instead they're just floating in space in two separate lines. When you make a jersey, think of it as a whole, three-dimensional piece. The entire hem here is just empty. Carry over that striping, it's a beautiful, elegant, simple pattern that should be replicated at least once more within the concept.
Maybe this could work as an alternate, granted the "Black Knights" are already known to be taking a different route with there jerseys and colors. With some touching up this concept could work great as a faux-vintage third. 4/10
David P. - UCLA Bruins
I love the Bruins, but not like the hockey team. I mean the college. I mean the college hockey team. I mean.
Pros: This jersey looks absolutely fantastic. It's simple, clean. It's just all in all a nice looking jersey. I love the use of two different shades of blue on each jersey. As great as that classic baby blue is, I feel like the navy just works a lot better with the yellow, especially with white.
Cons: This isn't anything new. That isn't too much of an issue, but it just doesn't have enough oomph. Also, the helmet looks more like a mustard rather than a yellow.
This is a great jersey, but what makes it so great is the fact that it's so tried and true. 8.5/10
Rocky Mountain Concepts - Las Vegas Aces
Where Daryl decided to take some strange turns with his concept, Rocky Mountain Concepts here has completely changed what we know about Las Vegas and did something completely new.
Pros: Kudos for making a completely new identity. The RAF logo would be fantastic for a jersey! Repeating the shape of the chevron was an intelligent choice. Your color choices really do make this similar to a military uniform. The brown shorts are a good choice for this, which is something I don't think I'll say in many situations.
Cons: Sorry, just me being a history buff, but why is there a British team in Vegas? Also, being more of a nerd, the British military doesn't use the chevron logo. Also, I'm not that huge a fan of the primary logo. The way the shadows make a 4 leaf clover is really weird to me. The lower yoke allowing the name on back to fit on it is definitely interesting. I don't know if I like it all that much. If the yoke reached up to the collar into the front, it would look a lot better. Put a stroke on your fonts and logos, it'll make them pop a lot more.
This is an interesting take on the whole Las Vegas team thing, but I don't know if it really works. If there were more of an explanation behind your choices here, then maybe I could get it. 6.5/10
SnowMonster - Colorado Avalanche
Colorado needs new jerseys.
Pros: Your execution and presentation are fantastic here. I love the mountain shape, it's clean while still looking like a mountain. The arm stripes work great with the yoke, something I don't really say often. It LOOKS like the jersey Colorado should have been using when they made the switch to the Edge instead of their current crappy template jerseys.
Cons: The only gripe I have is the use of black equipment and letters on the home jersey.
These are new jerseys they should use. 9.5/10
Taylor R. - Pittsburgh Penguins
This is another NHL jersey using the Under Armour template. AND the home jersey uses yellow, something that I've never seen before.
Pros: The execution of this jersey is perfect, and it looks absolutely gorgeous as well! I wouldn't have expected the skating penguin logo to look so good here, but it looks fantastic. Every piece is well put together, the striping patterns are beautiful, the shoulder logo looks great, the font even looks good. And I hate the Pittsburgh font.
Cons: I actually can't think of anything bad about this.
I know it might be a little early, but I really want to give this a perfect score. 10/10 and a COTW Nomination.
Vaughn R. - Burlington Blazers

Ain't this website just grand? We actually have our first pair of concepts for the IceCaps contest, and they seem to have very striking similarities.
We're starting off real strong with this one. Don't get me wrong, these concepts are great, but I don't want to see just Canadiens jerseys covered in IceCaps logos. Actually, I'm
expecting most every concept this competition to have the blue-red
color scheme, so don't be afraid to change it up! Be different! Just
because the Manitoba Moose decided to change their color to the Jets
doesn't mean that the IceCaps have to change their colors to the Habs!
Also... is that another Dylan? We're being overrun!
And now, for the main event, the concepts themselves!

Vaughn R. - Burlington Blazers
This is by far the most obscure team I've seen on here. For those of you who don't know the Burlington Blazers, they are a youth ball hockey team located outside of Toronto.
Pros: It's simple.
Cons: I don't really know where to begin. The different colors for all the fonts, the striping being so thin and simple, the striping not stopping at the hem, the numbers floating above the logo. There's not much here, and what is here could use some work on execution or a choice that I don't really understand that may or may not be relevant to ball hockey. Look at the other concepts posted here and try to gather some inspiration. Check out the COTW page, and Ryan's tutorials on jersey making.
Keep working at this, everyone starts from small beginnings! I'm not saying copy what other people do exactly, but try to practice and figure out how and why people do the things they do with their concepts. Just keep practicing and you'll have a 10 concept in no time! But for now, this concept gets a 3/10.
Well, that's Monday for ya. Keep sending in your concepts for the IceCaps competition! I want to see what you guys can do with the identity. And don't forget: Vote vote vote!
GO HAWKS!!! GO DUCKS!!!

2nd Taylor's Penguins concept for COTW. Really digging the white jersey
Wow, That Avalanche concept is just spectacular. I nominate it for COTW.
Snow Monster you can't nominate yourself for COTW! Having said that I'll gladly second the nomination for your Avs concept. Glad to see you back on here, been a couple years.
Colin, Yeah, sorry about that. I just realized that. Feel kinda an idiot now. It has been a while. Hope to crank out a few more concepts soon. Thanks for the COTW nomination.
I'll third Taylor's Pen's set for COTW
