Wednesday: Goal Horny
Hey Hey Howdy HJCrs. Let's jump right into this.
So last week I discussed maybe doing a goal song countdown. I love goal songs. Unfortunately for the longest time it seemed a lot of teams had the same goal song... It was like Joe Satriani's "Crowd Chant", Zombie Nation's "Kernkraft 400", Blur's "Song 2", or "Rock and Roll Part 2" by Some Gross Dude were the only songs allowed to be goal songs. Booooring... I mean, 3 of those 4 songs are good songs but I don't want to hear them over and over because multiple teams use them as goal songs.
So while researching all 30 teams' current 2015-16 goal songs (which wasn't easy to do, especially since I couldn't find some) I revisited a countdown that TSN did last year and realized, "Damn, a lot of these goal songs kind of suck".... So I decided not to countdown current goal songs, but instead, list off some of my personal favorites, and give you guys a chance to share your favorites.
Like I said, A lot of current goal songs were underwhelming. I prefer.... better goal songs... Maybe not 'better'.... 'unique'... Something a team can call their own and something so good it leaks into the team's identity. A good example of that is my pick for best goal song, and yes I'm biased...
Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis - Chicago Blackhawks
Pretty simple jersey. Nothing new or exciting. It's basically a slightly tweaked version of their new alternate jersey. Lighter blue, rounded yoke, recolored logo, and hem stripes. Don't like that black stuck around. It'd be cooler if the equipment was navy blue and then the navy blue got worked into the jersey somehow.

Logo Sketch - Lucas D.
Ok, I like the idea of peole wanting to do logos and send them here. But with no background info, or explanation I don't know what this is. My gut says Ducks logo, but I see a kite. Put some effort into the presentation too. Put your name in the corner, and maybe like "Ducks Logo" or "Kite" next to it. Maybe give us a couple different versions of the sketch in one image. Or if you're going to send one logo sketch, maybe center it in the image. Since it's a sketch I can forgive the crudeness of the lines when it comes to the overlapping. Perhaps get a new sketch app, one that allows you to use layers and sketch with a pencil tool before you bring colors into it.

New York Golden Blades Concept - Emin Z.
Well Emin, you remembered everything. You gave credit for the template, the logos...kind of... and even the fonts. No ID though! How do I know who you are!?!
I kind of like the look of the stripes going down the sleeve. Very Washington Capitals-esque. I think the hem striping could use some separation like the arm striping, and the bottom stripe could be thicker. The home and road are pretty good, but the alternate is pretty gaudy. Total third jersey material. The numbers are also slightly too far apart.

Los Angeles Kings Concept - Ryan C.
Yes! Purple, YES! I love it. I'll even look past the kind of boring and overused jersey design because of the purple. I think the only thing holding this back is the lack of purple in the logo. Here's what you do. Move the shield to the shoulders. And put the crown on the chest by itself. Boom.

Chelsea Dagger - The Fratellis - Chicago Blackhawks
Yes I know, you're all probably sick of it. I know at least a couple people have hated this song for like 7 years. But here's the thing.... that's great. I'm a big Fratelli's fan, and was before the Blackhawks started using this song. The song came out in 2006 and it was one of my favorites on the Fratellis' album "Costello Music". So I was ecstatic when the Hawks decided to use it. The song was so catchy, now you can't hear that song without thinking "Blackhawks" which is something a goal song ideally does. I've been to all three Stanley Cup parades the Hawks have had since 2010, and at everyone, this chant will spontaneously erupt, constantly, and I love it.
And if I'm going to be a homer, I'm going to include another homer pick...
Boom! Shake The Room - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince - Rockford IceHogs
I've been going to IceHogs games since they came to Rockford back in 2000. This is the only goal song they've ever used and I've never gotten sick of it. In fact, in the last couple years, I've started to appreciate it way more after hearing what some other teams get to celebrate their goals to. How can you go wrong with Fresh Prince?! And if you've never been to a game, do it to experience this. The last set of "tick tick booms" is accompanied by pointing back and forth and ending the BOOM by pointing at the other team's goalie. Good song, good fun had by all... except the other goalie.
Maria (I Like It Loud) - Scooter - Philadelphia Flyers
I have never really liked the Flyers, but this goal song used for a few years up until 2013. It's a good goal song, it's catchy and annoying to people who are only hearing it because they're giving up goals to the Flyers. My last year of college, my team decided to use this as our goal song, and we were good that year. We got to hear it a lot. It was fun being on the ice and hearing this song come on while celebrating your team's goal. It even got some of the fans and/or parents that were there watching the game into it, clapping and chanting along... So maybe I list this song for more sentimental reasons than others, but I think it's still a solid goal song.
And one of my new favorites......
Let Me Clear My Throat - DJ Kool - Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres had fan vote and this song won, best of all the players chose the song to be included in the voting. It's catchy, it's fun, it's awesome. The horns at the end of the song are fantastic for a goal song.... they remind me of a certain bonanza of brass....
ANYWAY... I could go on and list good goal songs forever, but I don't have forever... Share some of your favorite goal in the comments and I'll tell you they probably suck. Not really, but if it sucks I might say it sucks then....
While you're humming one of those songs to yourself, you should go vote! There's three votes! THAT'S SO MANY VOTES
3rd Quarter Vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW Oct 11-17 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Grey Jersey Comp Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 10:59pm Eastern)
And now, because I love you....... I bring you concepts.
Colorado Avalanche Alternate Jersey Concept - Jimmy T.
Good ol' Jimmy Tee. What a nickname...Pretty simple jersey. Nothing new or exciting. It's basically a slightly tweaked version of their new alternate jersey. Lighter blue, rounded yoke, recolored logo, and hem stripes. Don't like that black stuck around. Colorado Avalanche Concept - Brooks F.
Brooks ditches black in the Avs' color scheme in favor of a dark navy blue. I like the alternate jersey a lot because of the blue. I'm not a fan of the burgundy primary jersey. I think there's too much burgundy. The angled striping is a clever way of working in some mountain imagery into the jersey, but I think it'd be better if the point on the sleeves pointed up towards the yoke instead of down to the cuffs. I think you'd be better off with one pair of blank pants.Rating: 8/10

It'd suck to see their current jerseys gone but this could be the start of a solid replacement. I think if you add one more thick white/orange stripe to the striping pattern to match the logo it's perfect. I would like to see the rest of the equipment with this new pattern. And I feel like the shoulders are too bare, but I don't know what you'd do about that with their lack of logos.

As a huge gaslight anthem fan I have to approve of the devil's new goal https://youtu.be/Rch5dVkh5BU
My local BCHL team that I work for (Coquitlam Express), uses Maria as their song, and last year we heard it a lot! Hopefully tonight I will hear it a lot too! I luv it
I've been a part of a small movement to get the Islanders to adopt Jump Around. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ivR-1klAhE
Brooks's Avs concept for COTW. I like the balance of burgundy, white, and navy.
HIFK (Finnish Elite League) - Flamethrower.
It's a great goal song and has been used for
a long time.
In the NHL I like the Jets goal song. Hell Yeah
just gets you going. Also a few years ago Caps
used Wickerman and as a huge Iron Maiden fanatic
I just got to give them a nod for that.
