Thursday: Catching Up

Hello everyone!

Sure seems like a lot of things have been unveiled since last Thursday's post. I think it's time I catch up and review them. I won't insert any images, but I'll link you to the post where you can find them.

Team Canada (Link for pics)
These ones were actually unveiled last Tuesday and I forgot to write about them on Thursday, but it's better late than never that I talk about them. I just have one question that I'm pretty sure many of us had.

WHY BLACK???

I understand black being used as a trim color...okay honestly I really don't...but I don't mind it as just a trim color. It makes no sense being a prominent color with none of it being present on the Canadian flag. Hell, I'd argue that blue is more fitting than black, to honor their history as a (colony?) of Great Britain and some of their previous flags. But for now, I'd swap white for the black on the home jersey or go yokeless, and red for the yoke on the white jersey. Very similar, if not exactly Ryan's mockup for his improvement on the post I linked to.

(I apologize if I got any of that history wrong, I'm American and not exactly a huge history enthusiast.)

Heritage Classic Jerseys (Link for pics)
While I'm a bit disappointed that the Oilers jerseys are just the ones that they have been wearing last year (as opposed to something new), they're still a great and fitting look nonetheless. It also leaves the white jerseys open for being brand new for another use, which would be nice to see.

The Jets jerseys are just amazing looking. Maybe it's just me, but I honestly really like the Edge template (when it's used for traditional designs, not this kind of garbage). The Jet on the pants is a good touch too. Simply just a great throwback look that would honestly be an upgrade for the current Jets, just swap the logo for their current one.

Greenville Swamp Rabbits (Link for pics)
I'd say overall the jersey is a downgrade design wise, but it does add some uniqueness and team identity to the jerseys. The thick apron piping they use is much better than the thinner apron piping, and the added orange is a good look too.

South Carolina Stingrays (Same link as Greenville)
Not much to say about this one since it's the Caps current jersey essentially. I think this one works much better in the ECHL though, and a lot better with an actual logo as well. Makes me wonder what the Weagle would look like on the front of that jersey.

Hartford Wolf Pack (Again, same link as Greenville)
I'm a big fan of this change. The jerseys look pretty good, and tie into the parent club without being a direct copy. Although as said on Monday's post too, I think making the wordmark white on the red jersey would go a long way.

Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins (Same link as Greenville)
Man, Monday's post sure covered a lot didn't it?

As a Pittsburgh Penguins fan, I'm a big fan of this move. While I'm not a fan of AHL teams directly copying their NHL affiliates, at least in cases like this it results in an upgrade. I'm also a fan of the Penguins/triangle logo on the front, it adds a nice extra splash of yellow, and even more ties into the parent club. I'd still prefer to see a new design in these colors though.

Cleveland Monsters (Link for pics)
I definitely like the change to resolve their "identity crisis". The jerseys are an upgrade as well, though I wish the white jersey had a hem stripe.

San Jose Sharks (Same link as Cleveland)
Love the logos. The full body, sans SJ version would make a good primary.

Winter Classic (Same link as Cleveland)
Nice looking logo that's a good mix of modern and traditional, which fits perfectly for the Winter Classic. The W curving into the gateway arch is a good touch, and I'm a big fan of the typeface used on "Classic".

Avi S. - Team Canada WCOH
Considering that there aren't many differences from the actual jerseys, I'm going to assume that this is meant just as subtle improvements to them, and I'll review it as such.

+Increasing the thickness of the black outlines on the leaves is a good move and makes them more visible.
+The hem stripe is also an improvement and makes the hems less bare.
+I like the typeface you used better than the actual one used.
+Black kept as a trim color is the way to go.
+Good color balance.
-The TV numbers are a bit too close to the leaves.
-The black outline on the logo of the red jersey is a bit hard to see.
Overall: 8.5/10 and my COTW Nomination

Jimmy T. - Carolina Hurricanes
+Definitely better and more unique than their current set.
+The return of the warning flag striping is something they really need to do.
-I think having it on the arms, hems, socks, and pants is a bit overboard though. Keeping it on the hems and going with a regular stripe everywhere else would work just fine.
+Good color balance. Black pants were definitely the right choice for this one.
-Although I think the white jersey would look better with white cuffs instead of red.
+Good logo choices.
Overall: 8/10

Kalin S. - Quebec Nordiques
+I give you a lot of credit for how out of the box this concept is.
+I like the nod to the Bulldogs.
+Keeping the pants and socks simple was a good move.
-That pants logo is huge.
-The captain's patch gets lost a bit being in between two colors.
-I think this would work better as a one-off as it's still a bit busy.
Overall: 8/10

Taylor R. - University of New Hampshire

+I really like that shade of blue.
+More unique striping than Leafs rip offs.
+Glad to see a logo on the front instead of a wordmark.
+I like the typeface used.
-The striping bleeds together a bit from a distance on the blue jersey, and the gray is hard to decipher from the white on the white jersey.
-Some of the striping widths look inconsistent.
Overall: 8.5/10

That's all for today! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week.
