Week of September 19-25, 2011
It's finally starting tonight!!! It's only pre-season, but at least official NHL hockey will be played in official NHL buildings tonight. Actually, going on right now is a very interesting game between the Preds and the Panthers. They have split up their camps into 2 teams each and will be playing a split-squad double header! The first game is happening now and the next one will be later tonight. That's a pretty cool idea for the pre-season.
Just in case there are people wondering why the Leafs have an outline inside their new 3rd jersey logo, it is based off of the actual outline from the 1967 jersey. I've included a photo below.
HJC Fantasy Hockey is gathering its members. If you want to be a part of this year's fantasy hockey league, send me an email and I will let you know how to get involved.Yeah I know it's a pretty bad logo, but if anyone has anything better then feel free to send it in and it may get used.
The link that I sent out for the fantasy league didn't work for some people. If that was you, send me another email and I will give you some other info that should work.
The NCAA voting period ended last night. Unfortunately, we have a tie. Brian D.'s MSU concept tied with Alan Michigan concepts at 2 votes a piece. We will have a 24 hour playoff, ANYONE can email their vote in for either Brain's or Alan's concept. I will reveal the winner in tomorrow's post.
Last week's Weekly Poll was a discussion on Edge jerseys vs CCM jerseys. Overall, the sentiment was that the Edge cut looks good, but the CCM jerseys allowed for each team to be unique. Most seemed to think that the Reebok sweaters are just cookie cutter, paint by numbers jerseys. Still, there are some people that just love the CCM jerseys and there are some people that just love the Reebok jerseys.
This week's poll is interesting. It asks why most Americans don't watch hockey.Obviously the NHL will never be on the same level as the NFL in the U.S., but this is asking why it can't be on the same level as the MLB, NBA, PGA and Nascar? Also, feel free to discuss what the NHL can do to get even with those other sports down south. Click the banner on the right or go to the WEEKLY POLL page to discuss.
A list of the Concept of the Week nominees can be seen on the left side of the page. Click that banner to go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK page to see the concepts. This week every concept that was nominated got in the vote. Voting runs until Thursday @ 11:59pm EST.
A new week brings a new competition!Introducing the St. John's Ice Caps ReDesign. It's possible that the actual jerseys will be released during this competition, but that shouldn't matter too much as this, as always, is just for fun. Click the banner on the left or check out the ICE CAPS COMP for all of the rules.
QUICK HITS
Tampa Bay Lightning concept (by Kris)
Vancouver Canucks concepts (by Felix)Felix gives us the 40th anniversary jersey with a big V in the front and Johnny Canuck skating through it. I think the V may need to be less thick so that there isn't any negative space by the collar. I also think the jerseys may look better without hem stripes.
Vancouver Canucks concepts (by Nevill)Nevill places the V on the shoulders for his concepts. I like it better on the shoulders than the front. However, I would move the shoulder patches down the arm to the same position that they are in on the alternate. Then on the alternate, I'd replace the V on the front with the logo that is on the arm. That's just how I would do it.
Oklahoma Sooners concept (by Jose)Classic jersey, and most people know I love classic jerseys. I think it fits Oklahoma well. It also reminds me of the Montreal Maroons.
New York Islanders concept (by Kevin)Again, here is a better alternate for the Islanders if they absolutely must use a black 3rd jersey. The only thing I'd object to is the font used for the NOB (Name On Back).
New York Islanders arena concept (by Kris)The Islanders believe that a new stadium will solve a lot of their problems, I tend to disagree. Kris has drawn one up here and I love that he included a plan for the stadium's location! Really solid work Kris. COTW nomination from me!
New York Islanders concepts (by Matt D.)Matt has switched the colours of the arm stripes on the home jersey and straightened them on both the home and the road. The new addition is the alternate. The alternate would be unique to the Islanders, which it seems like is something they want. I think it would also be cool to see the lighthouse logo return as a shoulder patch.

Ryan, i was without internet until today and i wasent abloe to claim my fantasy hockey team. Please let me have another team! I am so sorry for not claiming the first one, I was without internet!!!
matt for COTW! love his islanders concepts.
Love both those Canucks concepts! I think I like Nevill's more though as it seems to honour the different eras of Canucks hockey with the V's and the striping patterns and the number font from the early Orca days. COTW for that one!
I'm starting to wonder what Jose has against Nike... Yet another 100% Nike school has been UA'ed. Even so, really solid looking concept. Being a Texas grad I can't go much farther than that.
I like Kevin's Islanders jersey. Though if you use that wordmark on the front, you should put the number under it.
Felix
Awesome Canucks concepts. Im digging some of these innovative ones Ive seen lately. Is it just coincidence that they all are for the Canucks though?
Thank Geoff for liking my concept on " Canucks ". Soon, Ryan will post my new New York " Rangers " concept tributed to 9/11. I think that any hockey team can be upgrade a bit here and there- it is all depends on designer's spirit and the IDEA behind. " Canucks " in general are a good source for innovations, but there are many other teams, too. I'm currently working on New York " Islanders " concept and have a great IDEA on " Canucks " new logo and, also , Aneheim " Ducks ".
