Monday: Week of July 16 - 22, 2012
I'll just dive right in and tell you that the winners of the Semi-Final match-ups in the HJC Open are Stéphane and Justin! The results of the lopsided votes are below.
Stéphane and Justin now have until Wednesday to get their entries in for the Final. If the entries come in early then we can begin to voting early. Keep in mind that the lower seed has to beat the higher seed. The higher seed will claim victory on a tie!
The Concept of the Week nominees have been listed. You can see the actual concepts by clicking on that banner or by going to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab. Committee Members can email their COTW vote in before the end of Thursday.
Also, the 2nd Quarter Vote is still going on. It will also end on Thursday. When you send in your COTW vote this week be sure to also take a moment and send in your 2nd Quarter Vote.
I mentioned this last week and I will do so again today. I am looking for a HJC Open Champion logo. This is not a contest (sort of) and there are no guidelines. The tourney logo is available on Friday's post. It is needed for the Monday, July 23 post. Send it in and I will choose my favourite one as the Champion's logo.
Los Angeles Kings concepts (by WhiteLightning)
I like the adjustments to the home and road jerseys. I would prefer the Kings' font be used for the NOB and player numbers though. The sweaters move a little towards the boring side because a classic font is used instead. It's not bad, just a missed opportunity I would say. The 3rd jersey does use the current font, but the stripes seem a bit cookie cutter to me. 7/10
Los Angeles Kings concepts (by Chuckie)
I don't know if the purple trim and collar inserts is working on the home and road concepts. Also, I like that Chuckie has used the "burger king" logo, but it's so different from the crest that it seems a bit out of place on the shoulders. I really like the grey alternate! Everything is pretty much perfect there, I just think a black helmet would complete the uniform better. 7/10
Stanley Cup Champions hat concept (by HJC)
This is something I made a couple of weeks ago. Today I'm getting my second look at it and I think I could have done better. The championship logo is based on Chicago's 2010 champs logo.
Reading Royals concepts (by WinnipegJets96) *Description on concept. 6/10
Minnesota Wild concept (by Felix T.)
The striping pattern certainly is unique and as regular readers here know, not my cup of tea. There are several execution errors here, but with practice and taking a look at the tutorials things should clean up. The biggest thing here is the poor/blurry quality of the image. 5/10
Tampa Bay Lightning concepts (by Deferoiler)
From the top, I love that Deferoiler created his own logo! Bonus points just fro attempting it. It probably needs a bit of refining (comes with practice), but the idea is great. I don't like how this looks like three different sweaters and not a complete set. 7/10
RBC concepts (by Dave C.)
A couple of weeks ago Mark from RBC (high school team) asked for some concepts to be created for the team. This is what Dave sent in and wanted to have it posted as a regular concept as well. I find that the shades of blue and green that were asked to be used really bled into each other. Having used the tools that were given to him though, Dave has done a decent job for a high school team here. 7/10
Quebec Nordiques concept (by Jeremy T.)
Again, I love the concept logo! The addition of the darker blue is also a nice add. It hasn't been used too much on this concept which makes it nice. The use of a cursive Q in a primary logo doesn't work too well in my opinion. I think it would be better as a shoulder patch. 7/10
Syracuse Crunch concepts (by Justin N.)
I like the simple jerseys and the addition of silver trim. I would like to see Tampa's logo on both shoulders, or a new logo for the empty one. I would also like to see the silver hem stripe under the white stripe, as it is on the arms. 7/10
Florida Panthers concept (by NB14)
For starters, I think the primary logo and player numbers look too small. The concept is well executed, but I think the response to the jersey would be indifference. We've seen worse, but it is by no means "awesome", "great", or "cool". 6/10
Florida Panthers concept (by Spirit104)
This one isn't too bad. I think if the collar was blue like the rest of the jersey, then it would give this a really clean and sleek look. I also think that the shoulder patches need an outline and the primary logo could use a bit thicker outline. 7/10
Super Mario concept (by Brian B.)
Brian entered this into the Video Game Comp and has now sent it in as a regular concept. I really like the creativity and the bright colours! My favourite part though would have to be the block with the C as the captain's patch. The player number is great as well! COTW nom from me! 8/10
Vancouver Canucks concepts (by WhiteLightning)
The home and road concepts are simple, sleek, and effective. Very nicely done. The alternate would work well as a fauxback, in my opinion, and not a full on third jersey. I really like the stripe heavy sleeves and Johnny Canuck as the primary logo, he could use a thicker outline though. The VC shoulder patches seem to clutter the jersey a bit and I think a blue helmet would be a better choice than the green one. 8/10
1) Stéphane - 10
7) Kyle C. - 3
2) Justin - 11
4) Tex - 2

Ryan, is there any way to view all of the entries for the HJC Open?
I will put up a link at the end of the tournament.
Thank you to everyone who voted me through the third round! I looks forward to facing Stephane in the finals!
Dave C did a nice job on his RBC concepts.
I wonder how the home white jersey would look without the yoke and with the green stripes matching the pattern on the blue road sweater.
Also - what if he kept the logo and numbering colors consistent front to back on the home white.
Might have a winning combo there with those changes.
Weee! Final! Thanks to everyone for putting me in final for a second year. It will be fun to face Justin who is such a talented concepter.
