Tuesday: Not Your Average Post!

Hi everybody. A joyous Tuesday it is. We have some great concepts this week that aren't all Toronto Maple Leafs! Also, we have the Chicago Express competition going on so get your entries in!

To clear things up about last Tuesday, it was just a unique situation and I decided to put a spin on it. I ended up making my vote one of the Panthers' jerseys and just gave a nod to the best Leafs concept out of the five.

Now that I got that out of the way, how about that outdoor game between the Wild and Blackhawks? I'm convinced that somewhere in the NHL rule book it says that the Chicago Blackhawks have to be in a signature event every year because they've done an outdoor game the past three years now. That must of happened at the last round of negotiations for a new contract or something. To honor that, I've come up with my Top three Chicago Blackhawks outdoor jerseys:

3. 2014 Stadium Series Jersey
Image from Zimbio.com
Sure they mighty just be a copy of the black alternates they use to have, but it was a lot better than most (excluding the Penguins) of the Stadium Series jerseys done. They took an already great jersey and slightly tweaked it to still keep a good look. Also note that this is the only outdoor game in recent history they have ever won.

2. 2016 Stadium Series Jersey

They may have gotten a shellacking from the Wild since the start of the game, but the only thing that I think was wrong about this jersey is the partly white collar. For some reason this design just worked because it didn't make those large numbers look awkward on the jersey.

1. 2015 Winter Classic
They may have lost to the Capitals, but they did so in a beautiful throwback to their 1957-58 season. While it might not be that much different than their current white jerseys (no black cuffs and  the alternate logo is on the sleeves instead of the yoke) that's because the Blackhawks never had to change their uniform set all that much since the mid 1950's.

Sorry but we currently don't have any new entries for the Chicago Express Contest. Check back tomorrow.

Finally, Please remember to vote for the COTW! It takes all of 10 seconds. That doesn't take up a ton of your TV show binge time.

COTW Feb 14-20 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
Chicago Express entries (due Friday @ 10:59pm Eastern)

On to the Concepts!

Zeke Goldsmith- Windsor Spitfires
Positives: The striping on the jersey is simple but at the same time unique. Also, the contrast-colored arms on the white jersey was a good idea. Overall, your design is simple yet appealing.
Negatives: That being said, your logos, name, and numbers are pixelated, making them blurry. Also, bring the name down a bit from the yoke.
Overall: 6.75/10

Vaughn Roberts- CHI vs. MIN Stadium Series
Positives: The traditional style jersey of the Minnesota Wild looks great. Adding a "State of Hockey" logo to the back hem was a nice touch as well. The overall simple wide hem stripe with a small complementary stripe works well.
Negatives: The Blackhawks' jersey looks more like a jersey from the Lithuanian National Hockey Team than the Chicago Blackhawks. The Green as the primary color with the wrist-to-wrist yoke and abstract stripe design doesn't work for a team such as the Blackhawks.
Overall: 7/10

Lucas Daitchman- STL vs CHI Stadium Series
Positives: Making the Blues logo all white on this jersey was a good look for the concept itself. The design of the St. Louis jersey has a strong resemblance to their early uniform styles, but puts a modern twist on it. The Blackhawks jersey has a good balance of dark and light overall, with a unique sleeve and stripe design. Your concept overall is well executed and I don't see any mistakes.
Negatives: Beside the fact that the Blackhawks are in another outdoor game (just kidding), the concept could be a little bit cleaner.
Overall: 7.75/10

Matt Gomula- Ottawa Senators
Positives: First off, the senators need new jerseys, and there's no better option than to bring back the original design with a more modern profile logo. What is also nice about your jersey set is that you created a red version out of the classic design and you made a spin on the 1920's classic jersey.
Negatives: I can't find anything wrong with this set. Good job.
Overall: 9.5/10 COTW NOMINEE

Alan Su- San Jose Sharks (90's style)
Positives: 90's indeed! First impressions of this jersey get me to think of an inline hockey jersey from the days of the RHI. The enlarged logo, curved-stripe design, and color scheme all say 1990's.
Negatives: It would be nice to see the back of these jerseys. With the way the stripes flow from the right shoulder down to the left hip, it makes you want to see what the design does on the back.
Overall: 8.5/10

Jarrett Tuttle- San Jose Sharks
Positives: I know I've seen the teal gradient done on shark concepts before, but doing it on the numbers was an interesting idea to go with it.
Negatives: if you are going to gradient the numbers, please keep the numbers on the back and sleeves the at the same gradient level.
Overall: 7.5/10

Ricky Mazella- Montreal Canadiens
Positives: The "Montreal" script is an interesting concept for a Canadiens' jersey.
Negatives: Using a Montreal Expos baseball jersey script for the front of a Canadiens' jersey just doesn't work here. You are using the Columbus Blue Jackets jersey template and recoloring it in the Canadiens' colors.
Overall: 6.5/10

Well kids that's all the goodies I got for today. Don't forget to send in your Chicago Express concepts and VOTE for COTW. Have a good rest of the week everybody and I'll see you this time next week!

It was a serious toss up between Alan's shark concept and Matt's ottawa senators but Alan's concept left me wanting more. i really wish he had a back to it because I would have liked to see what would have been done.

I really liked Alan's concept too, but something's missing. Maybe enlarge the numbers and move them to the middle?

To follow up on the Blackhawks playing in an outdoor game every year, Steven, there are reports that the NHL is strongly considering the Blues hosting the Blackhawks at Busch for the 2017 Winter Classic.

Steve Marc said...

I heard about that. I mean that makes since due to the proximity of the two teams but seriously? Just because they have a large fanbase doesn't mean that the NHL will make a ton of money off of them. Have Nashville or Columbus play the blues instead. While they may not be a large market, it would give good exposure to those smaller market teams. But what do I know?

Putting Chicago in two consecutive Winter Classics would be asinine.

Not Jackets, Steven... Wild. I wanted to do something more (unique). but between Motreal and Detroit that is difficult. As for the expos script, the Habs "stole" the mascot, didn't they? I figured it looked better on a hockey jersey than a baseball one and I stand by that sentiment. Granted the jersey as I said could use something more.
