Friday: The Dawning of the Age of Adidas

By now you've all seen the Adidas reveals, and while there are some fantastic updates, there are some huge letdowns as well.  I'm not going to go into detail here because we have a special treat for y'all coming up where we will further discuss the new designs, but I will say that for their first attempt at a uniform, Vegas really killed it.  The floral detailing in the arm striping and logo are the touches that really clinch it for me.  While I may not approve of some of their roster choices, I can approve of their aesthetics.

For those of you that don't follow me on twitter (which is most of y'all, I still have yet to reach the coveted dozen followers mark), I shared a preview of the Fanatics version of the Preds' new uniforms which I will now post here.
Looks just like what the Preds will be wearing on ice next year.

In other uniform news, the Sharks released their promo schedule and on Saturday, October 14, they will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Night by giving away special Los Tiburones jerseys to everyone in attendance.  Personally, I like these jerseys for the same reason I love the Ducks' old Wild Wing jersey.  They're so ridiculously over the top that I can't help but enjoy them.

Look later today for the COTW vote for June 16-22 as well as the vote for the first round of the HJC Open.  Entries for the Open were due at noon today, so if you didn't get your first concept in on time be sure to vote so you can be a part of the action.

Now on to today's concepts!

Anthony C.- Anaheim Ducks

Our first concept of the day is a Ducks design that comes to us from Anthony C.  I really like the merging of the old striping pattern with the new color scheme.  I also love the use of the original logo, I've never really been a fan of the webbed D.  I don't know why, but the colors work way better with this striping pattern.  It's probably because the striping isn't nearly as busy as it is on the current set.  I also love that this set eliminates the phantom yoke that Anaheim currently uses, it's just a design choice that does not work.  I think that the numbers on the away jersey should be black in order to help the color balance, as black is much more prevalent on the home set.  I also wish that you'd gone with breezers that were more similar to the ones they wore in eggplant and jade.  Additionally, shoulder patches would really help this one out, it's a little too blank up top.  As for execution, socks would have been nice to see and you're missing helmet logos.  Final verdict: a good combination of both eras of the Ducks' identity.  7.5/10

Anthony C.- Team Canada

This is just Canada's 2002 uniform with a different font and slightly altered shoulder patches.  While I do like the addition of the yokes to help the color balance, it's not enough of a break from the original set.  I also would have inverted the colors on the patch for the light jersey.  Same execution errors as above.  Final verdict: A decent design, but not that inspired.  5.5/10

Burkus Circus-  New York Islanders

Our next concept is a design for an Islanders third jersey from Burkus Circus.  I like the idea of an orange third for the Isles, it's way better than the black they've become so enamored with.  I like the idea of the four stripe pattern, a nod to the logo and their four Stanley Cup wins.  I actually recently submitted a similar concept myself.  I really like the yoke striping, the two stripes on each side was a good choice.  I also like the three stripes on the back of the neck, a very clever way to subtly incorporate Adidas branding.  I don't know how I feel about the choice of navy, as the Isles have once again moved away from it in recent years.  I'm also not a fan of the isolated NY logo, and I hate that style of collar.  While I appreciate the stripes in the numbers, similar to Nashville, I would have gone with a more squared off font to match the font in the logo.  As for execution, equipment and breezers would have been nice to see,and the name on the back is very pixelated.  Final verdict: not a bad concept, but some execution errors hold it back.  7/10

Burkus Circus- New York Rangers

Burkus Circus' second design of the day is for another New York third, this time for the Rangers.  I am intrigued by the idea of a red Rangers jersey, as they have never worn one.  I also like the idea of a chest stripe, and I think it could really work with the Lady Liberty logo.  I think the use of navy here is a good choice, as it keeps it from looking too much like a Habs jersey.  I don't think red numbers were the way to go here, they blend in a little too much.  The cuffs are superfluous, as they would be covered by the gloves, and I would probably ditch the matching hem stripe as well.  Most importantly, ditch those shoulder patches.  As a Rangers fan, I absolutely despise that logo and wish that all records of its existence would be scrubbed from this earth.  Same execution errors as above.  Final verdict:  an interesting idea for a Rangers third, but some design choices detract from it.  7/10

Denny J.- Atlanta Thrashers

Next up is Denny J. with a design for the now defunct Atlanta Thrashers.  Ahh, memories... As a hockey fan and resident of Atlanta, the Thrashers hold a special place in my heart.  This set draws more from the original Thrashers uniforms, as opposed to the polarizing baby blues that they wore towards the end of their existence.  This design completely eliminates the baby blue from the color scheme, simplifying the colorways.  It also abandons the "winged" full length yoke in favor of a more traditional striping pattern  The most frustrating part about this concept is the fact that the striping is different across all of the jerseys.  I also think that given the logos, the hem strip should slant down instead of up so that it's not crowding the crests.  While the elimination of the baby blue works in the primary set, the logo used as the main crest on the third just does not look good without it.  Finally, I'm not a big fan of your glove designs.  Final verdict: I may be a little biased, but this one just doesn't do it for me.  7/10

FC Macbeth- Columbus Blue Jackets

Our next entry is a Columbus Blue Jackets concept from FC Macbeth.  Let's start with the positives: I'm really digging those new logos, and kudos for crediting the original artist.  The attention to detail on your original logo for the third, including the 17 stars from the flag, is fantastic.  I also like the striping pattern inspired by civil war patches, but I do think it should extend completely around the arm.  Now for the negatives:  I'm completely baffled by your color choices for your original logo and the alternates.  If there is some reasoning behind it, please clue me in.  The addition of red and vintage white make no sense with the absence of them on the logos, and the vintage white yoke on the white jersey is a terrible choice.  I didn't like the text in the hem striping when the Kings did it, and I like it even less here with the angled striping.  If Vegas taught us one thing on Tuesday, it's that white gloves don't work.  Now for that alternate... I've already addressed the color issues, so I'll move past that.  I do like the logo you made, but I probably would have extended the red and white to make a chest stripe, I think that would really work well.  The "buttons" on it just look weird, and without context would only further confuse spectators.  The text in the sock striping is odd and ultimately pointless, as you'd never really be able to read it.  As for execution, names on the back are way too big (especially on the alternate), and I don't know if you can claim credit for a naval star logo.  It's a fairly common design.  Final verdict: once again, I'm really confused by a lot of your design choices.  4/10

Jets96- Pittsburgh Penguins

Next up is our very own Jets96 with a design for the Penguins that combines elements from uniforms worn in 1974 and 1994.  I like the idea of combining the color schemes of the two eras, and Jets96 does a nice job of balancing them between the two jerseys.  The simplistic striping pattern from the RoboPenguin era is a good fit for this set, and I think using the hem stripe that draws from the '74 uniform is an improvement.  I'm not too sure about the use of the Pens' Edge breezers, it's a little too modern for such a classic look, and I would have liked to have seen some blue in them.  I'm also not sold on those collars and I'm not a fan of the gloves.  I think you could have done a better job of incorporating blue into them.  Final verdict: a good looking set, but the mismatch of breezers and jerseys takes a little away from it.  8/10

Lucas D.- Buffalo Sabres

Our final entry of the day is a Buffalo Sabres concept from Lucas D.  Given the old school feel of this one, I can only assume that it's an idea for the upcoming Winter Classic game against my beloved Rangers.  I gotta say, if I saw the Sabres take the ice in these, I'd be hard pressed not to root for them.  The classic striping, the chest stripe, the return to royal blue; all of it works for me.  The only things I can think that might possibly make it better are the quilted numbering from the old third jerseys and maybe a double stripe on the breezers, just to keep the striping consistent.  Final verdict: a fantastic WC design for the Sabres that I would love to see take the ice.  9.5/10 and my COTW NOMINEE!!!

That's all for me this week!  See y'all next Friday!

@TC, notice on the bridager general's shoulder-thingy? That's why I added in gold. I tried to inroduced another colour to Columbus by adding in snow white instead of vintage wbite. Also, I didn't really know that white gloves aren't a good design choice. I made it before Vegas did it. I expected something higher than 4 out of 10 but it is not wnat I'm expecting. Not to be rude, however.

The gold works in the sense of taking cues from the military design, but the fact that there is no red or gold in your main logos is confusing. Either add them to the logos or stick to the color palette from the logos. Also, I don't know if that's a snow white so much as a lilac color. I will admit that the four might have been a little harsh, but there are a lot of miscues on the design of this set.
