Thursday: A Good Day to be a Pens Fan

The Pittsburgh Penguins and their fans are in a really good place right now. After last nights 4-1 victory in game 2 the Pens are up 2-0 in the series and 2 wins from their 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup. And while we're loving every minute, everyone else seems to hate it. Where the Pens are now guarantees absolutely nothing to them, but it sure is a nice cushion, so we'll all just have to wait and see how the rest of the series plays out, and enjoy some good hockey while we're at it.

In other news, the Norfolk Admirals have unveiled their new logo just a few hours ago.

As you can see by the tweet below, the logo is basically just a revamp of their 1989 design by sticking it in a roundel. In my opinion, it's a big upgrade over their previous logo, but still has more to be desired. The roundel treatment is a little basic, and the typeface could use an improvement, though a positive is the rope treatment for the outer border. Overall, I think this is more fitting as a secondary logo, but still an upgrade.

This week is a fairly calm week in voting, with only the COTW vote to worry about. The HJC Open logo competition is going on, but you still have over a week for those so take your time.

COTW May 19-25 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
HJC Open Logo Competition entries (due Friday, June 9 @ noon ET)

Also, do you remember the Doug Gilmour jerseys that Ryan was auctioning on Ebay last week? Well there were some complications with them, and they are back up. If you would like to check them out, click the links below. They end next Wednesday, so make sure you keep track so you don't miss out.

Chicago Blackhawks
Buffalo Sabres

***UPDATE***
I realized late at night that I forgot to post the HJC Open entries, so here they are.

Cody R. (x2)
Phil B.

---------------------

Adam G. - Winnipeg Jets
+Double blue is usually a really nice looking color scheme, and this is no exception.
-I don't think this would be a problem here, but it's always possible that these two shades of blue wouldn't contrast well enough.
+I think the white numbers, name, and logo stand out in a good way.
-The logo looks very pixelated though.
-I don't think the shoulder stripe works here since it's the same color as the yoke itself. It just looks out of place.
-The TV numbers would look much better if you just put them inside the arm stripe.
Overall: 8/10

Cody R. - Frozen Montana
+I think you have the right concept here, but the execution of it could use an improvement.
+One thing I love about the presentation is how you explained your influences and choices. Otherwise I most likely would not have understood.
+The state outline of Montana could be a good starting point, especially if it's simplified like the Welcome sign's look, as are the mountains and snow.
-The typeface choice on here is mediocre, especially the Arial/Helvetica like typeface used on "Montana", "2018", etc. It just screams amateur to me. "Frozen" is better, but still could be improved upon.
-Speaking of which, I think you need to put more emphasis on just about every piece of text on here, especially the city and year. Take some of the event logos from The NHL for example, the event's name is normally breaking it's shield, giving it more emphasis and flair.
-The stick in the logo is also pretty tacky the way it's used.
Overall: 6.5/10

+On the other hand, the jersey have a clean, classic look to them.
+The Grizzlies' jersey looks like something that the Montreal Maroons could have worn..and that's just a testament to the vintage look you've given it.
+The Bobcats' jersey looks a bit more on the modern side, while still looking like it could have been worn at the same time as the Gizzlies'.
-The vertical stitching should stop at the hem stripes.
-The numbers on both jerseys look just a tad small.
Overall: 8.5/10 and my COTW nomination

Danny R. - Netherlands
+You do a good job here matching the designs for the home and road jerseys despite using two completely different color palettes.
+The flag striping looks great on the road jersey.
+I love the logo choice here. I also really like the font, though I'm not sure if it has any meaning behind it.
-I don't think the white pants work well. Reminds me of a creamsicle.
+The orange collar insert in the road jersey is a really neat touch.
+The striping is also really nice on the alternate jersey and it's much less of your traditional hockey jersey, but it works.
-I'm not completely sold on the wordmark, though.
Overall: 8.5/10

Jordan R. - Atlanta Flames
+I've been loving just about every concept from your Defunct series, this one included.
+The matching striping between both sets works pretty well, and helps balance the colors.
+I really like the look of the deeper maroon red. It creates a nice contrast to help the white and yellow pop.
-Though the yellow kind of blends in to the white, so separating those wherever possible would be a smart move.
-Similarly, I'm a big fan of bright, bold colors, so the maroon doesn't fit the bill for me. I'm not sure where I fall on this one.
-The logo looks just a tad big.
Overall: 8.5/10

Noah B. - Charolina Hurrnets
+One thing that you've been doing really well in this series is combining the looks of the NHL and other team you decide to use. Using the other teams' striping in the style of the NHL team works out really well.
+In reality I don't think mismatching jerseys are the way to go, but it works well here since that's what Carolina does anyways.
+Good color balance, though the road jersey could maybe use a bit more teal.
-Make the name on the white jersey white, it doesn't contrast well enough in teal. You have it white on purple on the home jersey, so why switch it up?
-I'm not sure if this is intentional, but your background is transparent and there are a few loose pixels, mainly right below the white jersey's name.
Overall: 8/10

Noah B. - Denvorado Nuggalanche
+These jerseys actually look god awful, but that's a good thing considering what you were going for.
+You again do a great job of combining the teams, with Denver's striping on Colorado's template. It doesn't look good as mentioned but it fits your theme perfectly.
+Good color balance and logo choice.
-While it doesn't really throw off the color balance, I'm not sure I'm a fan of the dark blue pants, though I will say that powder blue pants on the home jersey might be an overload there.
-I can't say for certain, but it might look better if the Avs' logo was recolored to match the jerseys.
Overall: 8/10
