Tuesday....the 12th

Hey everyone! Dylan A. here with you today. The two Dylans have switched days as Wednesdays have become too busy for me to keep writing, and I didn't want to leave the site and my writing duties. You know what else I don't want to do? I don't want to forget to remind you to vote.
COTY-October vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW Nov 4-10 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Only one Milwaukee entry today

Bryan W.

Alrighty then, let's jump right into it!

New York Stadium Series Concept - Stephen T.
Stephen has ideas for the New York game. The Islanders jersey seems to be nothing more than their current home jersey, but darker blue was used. The Rangers jersey is nothing more than their white jersey without the yoke striping and the "Rangers" script. I like the New York script though. It'd sell well. The script should be moved up more though.

Rating: 6/10 - Not very creative. Very few actual change from their actual primary jerseys. Execution is good except for the New York script being low.

St. Louis Blues Alternate Jersey Concept - Justin S.
Red is back for the Blues. I was never a fan of the red in their look. It kind of looks better than what they wear now, but it was odd to me for a team named the "BLUES" to have red be so prominent in their jerseys. That being said, I like how it's used here. Wouldn't mind seeing a little less though. Of course, I'm not a fan of using the Ducks template here. It's one thing to use similar "striping" between two teams as we're kind of at that point where a lot of the really attractive striping patterns have been used. So it's not uncommon for them to all look somewhat similar. But something as unique as the Ducks jerseys' SWOOP, should stay there in Anaheim. If any team really did start using it, it'd come across as lazy.

Rating: 6/10 - Colors look good, less red would be better. Find a new template though, these are Ducks sweaters.

New Jersey Devils Concept - Wings98
Wings' execution is already showing improvement and I like that. While the striping on the home and road are way too wide, I like the wide striping. Thin it out just a little bit and you've got a great set here. The normal Devils numbers would look great with the striping as the numbers are wider than the average numbers in the league. The yokes look pretty good too despite it not being the Devils' classic squared yoke. The black jersey seems to be a black version of what they currently wear but with a round yoke. The logo on the front of the black jersey is too simple for me. I don't care for state outlines on jerseys plus the simple font isn't doing it for me. Jersey looks nice, just needs a new logo.

Rating: 7/10 - Execution is improving by a lot!

Philadelphia Flyers Concept - Dylan W
Mr. Wonka doesn't stray too far from the current Flyers jerseys, which is good, I don't care for the team very much but the jerseys are great. I like the separation of the arm length yoke and the black cuff, but I don't think the outline of the yoke is necessary. I like that Dylan didn't use the colored nameplate, but at the same time, I wish he did. Philly's the one team, in most of our opinions, that is OK to use colored nameplates. It's kind of their thing. Plus, the black name on the orange jersey isn't my favorite. The addition of black onto the hem is a lateral move to me. It matches the arms now, but I prefer the plain white or orange stripe. One last thing, even though I like it the way it is, shouldn't the white and orange on the hems have an outline like the arms?

Rating: 7/10 - Overall good set, similar to current Philly jerseys, some better things, some worse things. Good work and execution as always.

Winnipeg Jets Concept - Jets96
Mr. Jets throws way back for the Jets. The logo is from their WHA days. This concept suffers from the same fate as Justin's Blues concept. It's basically a Ducks jersey. BUT, the swoop here at least goes all the way around and creates some sort of full jersey stripe, so a few points there. I'd still rather see something different. But I can see why it's used here as the logo itself features a big SSSSSWOOOOP.

Rating: 7/10 - I prefer a different template, not a Ducks one, but it fits here somewhat because of the logo.

DC United (MLS) Hockey Jersey Concept - Phil B.
I don't know much about soccer, or futbol, and I'm not really a big fan. Normally when we see intersports concepts like this I like to see the jerseys look similar and have the same design elements. But I'm glad there's not a big Volkswagon logo on the chest. I like the stripes too. The stars on the bottom seem a bit big. Maybe make them smaller and space them out. It'd be neat to see the numbers the use on their actual jerseys used here.

Rating: 7/10 - Pretty could interpretation of a soccer team jersey, could be better and resemble their actual kits more.

New York Islanders Concept - Jordan R.
Let me start off by saying, I realize a lot of Jordan's Nike concepts with the blank arms maybe aren't what HE would do but what NIKE would do, and if that's the case for sure, that's accurate. When I say I don't like the blank look very much I'm not knocking Jordan's work down, but Nike's.

Now onto this concept....Not super different than what they wear now but the stripes stay in the middle of the arm instead of taking up the bottom half of it. I like that though. I do really like the stripes on their current jersey that run off the cuff. I'd like to see the orange stripes on the hem as well. I like the black, gray, and white alternate too. Well executed. I don't prefer the wordmark, but I like how the jersey keeps the look of the other two jerseys. I also like the new logo. One of the better Brooklyn-ized Islanders logos I've seen thus far.

Rating: 7.5/10 - Not super different but I miss the larger arm stripes that go off the cuff, and that logo is great.

Chicago Blackhawks Stadium Series Concept - Ryan (HJC)
Ryan calls upon my favorite Blackhawks jersey of all time for inspiration here. Big points with me. I don't know how I feel about the stripe above the TV number. Seems like a weird place for it. I'm ok with the stripes not going across the chest but I'd like to see the arm striping pattern along the hem. I miss the "C" logos on the shoulder too. A recolored vintage version, like on their last alternate, would be golden.

Rating: 7.5/10 - Great start but some missed opportunities with the striping and "C" logo hurt this concept in my eyes.

Nashville Predators Concept - Jordan R.
I think the Nike simplification of Nashvilles look here is great. I'd rather see the shoulder patch on both shoulders. I really like the yellow jersey, though I feel the white could use a bit more yellow. I don't know how I feel about the alternates logo... I think it looks good on the chest, but I don't know if it really fits in the identity anymore. The main logo is so sleek and more simplified than what it used to be, and that logo still has it's more realistic shading and coloring. Still looks sharp though.

Rating: 8/10 - Good look for Nashville, says "Nike was here" without being ugly or too boring

Breaking Bad Hockey Jersey Concept - Brian B.
I admittedly didn't watch Breaking Bad, I know, I'm sorry. Truth is, I watched the first 4 episodes on Netflix at the end of Summer 2012, and I thought it was good, but just never kept up with it. That being said, I might not "get" every reference here, but I get the Heisenburg reference so at least there's that. I like that striping is simple not too gimmicky. The captain's patch and the name on the back is a nice touch. I feel like the atom could be a shoulder patch and leave room for a real number. I'm sure there's at least one number that holds some significance to the show that could have been featured on the back.

Rating: 8/10 - Withheld the urge to go too gimmicky and the jersey looks better because of it.

Dallas Stars Alternate Jersey Concept - Frank C.
The Stars need a black jersey. A black alternate jersey that is, I don't want anything replacing their set right now, but a black jersey is just something they need. I feel it will complete their look. Plus black has always been a big color in the team's palette. I'm assuming in the next year or two we'll see one pop up. I'm hoping they take the same route as Frank here. Keep things simple like their current jerseys. I like seeing the Texas logo on the shoulders as well as the circular logo on the chest. It's pretty close to their home and away but different enough to be an alternate.

Rating: 8/10 - Simple and similar to the home and away, but different enough to get away with being an alternate.

Red Bull New York (MLS) Hockey Jersey Concept - Phil B.
Now here, Phil uses the stripes on their soccer kits as the arm striping. Boom, big points with me. I like that. Same thing here with the numbers as on the DC set, but I actually like these numbers better. It'd be neat to see the Adidas logos on these soccer jerseys and it wouldn't be "inaccurate" as Reebok is owned by Adidas.

Rating: 8/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Stadium Series Concept - Ryan (HJC)
Ryan hits the nail on the head here. If the teams throw back for the Stadium series the Penguins should throwback to the 90's. I know the fans want it and the only thing that would make it better is actual yellow, not vegas gold. I'd personally want to see the robo penguin back in action but this works. I feel like if the Penguins used this jersey it would work its way into the regular jersey rotation and eventually take over, with a dark version, as the full time primary jersey.

Rating: 8/10 - Great idea for a throwback, they'd better do it. Not "creative" but it's a throwback, so, it doesn't have to be....meh

Anaheim Ducks Concept - David P.
David loses the "swoop" on the bottom of the jerseys in favor of a more classic looking stripe pattern. The black jersey looks great, not a fan of the phantom yoke, I'd rather see or orange or just left completely blank. The orange jersey looks even better. Ducks need a full time orange in my opinion. But the gem here, for me, is the white jersey. The orange and bronze look great by themselves on top of white. I'd be interested in seeing the other jerseys with a similar striping. By that I mean the jersey color in between the stripes, not just white.

Rating: 9/10 - Really fantastic set here but that white is the CRÈME DE LA CRÈME of Ducks jerseys. COTW Nom!

Well there you have it, another day another post. Anything you guys agree with? Or...maybe even....Disagreeeee? Comments guys...Comments....

On Phil's DC United concept, I think the stars being that large is fitting as they remind me of the flag of Washington DC. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. And Jordan's Nike Series designs as of late have been very sharp.

I STRONGLY encourage creativity on the blog so Brian's concept gets a standing O from me. And I never watched the show either.

@ Ryan: That name generator is so much fun :D

Jonathan that was exactly what I was going for in my DC United concept. Plus the striping of that is basically an extension of the eagle wings in the logo. With regards to the overall design, I wanted to stay away from applying the actual kits to the jerseys because the Adidas system that is in place just limits the creativity opportunities.
