Tuesday: 3 Down, 4 To Go! Kings and Ducks Unveiled
Well guys I'm sure you've all seen by now, but the Kings and Ducks have revealed their Stadium Series jerseys. Orange vs. Gray guys, some of you guys have sent in concepts that predicted that, and now we know for sure. at about Noon EST. a Youtube video was released showing off the new threads. So let's dive into it, we'll start with the guys in orange, the Ducks.
BUT WAIT...WAIT WAIT WAIT
.........go vote........
First thing we were treated to was a new logo patch. The patch reads "OC" in the Ducks' font. It's a nice addition to the current logos and it makes sense. Anaheim is IN the Orange County and the jersey is orange. Surprised it took as long as it has to get some sort of reference to it...and quite honestly, a orange jersey.
Next, we saw a name plate which includes three colors in the letters. That seems too busy to me. Meh...
Finally, a full body shot of a large looking Ryan Getzlaf modeling the jersey. Chrome treated Duck foot, which was expected, doesn't look as bad as I thought it would, but I still don't like the chrome look. Also notice no yoke, unlike the Kings jerseys that we'll get to, and the Islanders jersey. And.... what stuck out to me was the angled arm stripes. Hmm... I sure hope none of the other teams share that template since the Ducks and Islanders now have it for the Stadium Series....HMMMMM......
Well first glimpse of the Kings jersey in the video we get to see a new shoulder patch for them as well. I like this logo as well. Fits in with the identity well and it looks good.
And this is where things got good. Standard Kings font on top of a GRAY JERSEY. Something a lot of us were hoping to see!
And the full reveal! Chrome treated crown logo, which will remain as the only good looking chrome logo, angled arm stripes (ugh) and same yoke as the Islanders' S.S. jersey. (ugh) Also, kind of hard to notice here, but the TV numbers are angled slightly so that they appear to be straight when the player is in motion. I hate that. It just makes the TV numbers look sloppy. Almost as if it was by accident, but no one felt like fixing it.
So now it appears that each Stadium Series jersey will be the same basic thing. New yoke cut, with angled arm stripes that will be slightly altered to fit the team's current look.
Tag Salzgitter IceFighters (German League - Tier 4) Third Jersey Concept - Martin L.
Oooh, a German concept, and for a team that I, and I'm sure most of us, have never heard of. First off, their logo could use a tune up, but that's not on Martin. I like the double green. That's something you don't see done enough. I like the choice to move the sponsor from the main crest to a smaller patch. Here's a link to their store where you can see their jerseys. I'm indifferent towards the wheat color used here instead of white. Normally I want to see some white but it doesn't look bad here. The numbers seem too small and spaced too far apart, and the kerning (spacing between characters) in the nameplate is way too high. Space them closer together.
Rating: 6.5/10 - I like where this is headed but some changes could be made to improve.
Rating: 7/10
Adirondack Phantoms Concept - David P.
I like seeing purple. Ever since the Kings ditched it I feel a void. but I don't care for how purple and orange look together. I gotta say the white jersey here is my favorite. Maybe if the numbers weren't orange on that jersey I'd like it better. I just can't get behind this set with these colors.
Rating: 6.5/10
Team Canada Olympic Jerseys - Dylan W.
Another very straightforward design. Very simple, classic look. I really like the gold trim. I wish the crest had the sublimated details like the image on the right. I wish Nike was still making jerseys like this, simple, but not so simple that it stops looking like a hockey jersey.
Rating: 8.5/10
Team USA Olympic Jerseys - Dylan W.
Right off the bat, I have to say this. I don't care for the Team USA logo. Never really have. Luckily they can't use it on Olympic jerseys anyway. I'd rather see a "USA" block script or that sweet new shield they're actually using. The arm striping is interesting. I think it works a lot better on the white jersey.
Rating: 8/10
Montreal Canadiens Third Jersey Concept - Greg D.
Greg brings back the blue chest stripe from the mid 40's, which I know a lot of people want to see happen. First off, the name on the back is huge, and it appears the number is too, those should be scaled down. I don't like the current logo in the striping, or on the jersey at all. Seems like its unnecessary on a "throwback" to mix eras. Not a fan of the wavy arm stripes to go with the jersey cut.
Rating: 6/10
Quebec Nordiques Concept - Rob C.
This is an update that the Nordiques jerseys needed back in the day. The lack of any striping on their jerseys always bugged me. I feel like the fleur de lis here are too detailed. The rest of the identity here is flat, 2-D and simple, so the bevel is a bit much. Plus the shoulder patches are huge. I'd scale them way down. The numebrs look squishe dbut I can't tell if it's the font though. The "REEBOK" tag on the upper back should be white on the blue jersey and vice versa.
Rating: 7/10 - It's an over simplified update to the old Nordiques. I like the arm stripes but that's really the only part of the update I can get on board with.
Quebec Nordiques "Unused" Logos Concept - Rob C.
Rob has a second Nordiques concept but this time modifies the unused jerseys that the team was to use had they not moved. I like the color scheme, and it looks good in this very simple jersey. I'd like to see more angled lines, something to go with the logo better. This looks like someone took the paint bucket tool to Rob's other Nordiques concept. That's not always a bad thing, normally is, but this is a missed opportunity.
Rating: 7/10 - The color scheme saves this concept to me.
Team Czechoslovakia Concept - Stephen T.
The crest looks really nice on the front of a jersey. And it's getting all my attention as the striping is simple. Anything too crazy would draw my attention to that and not the Czech crest. Same could be said if the arms were left blank like Nike would most likely do. The one thing that bugs me is the white jerseys sock. The striping is backwards. Even if it was a conscious decision on Stephen's part, I don't agree with it. The number on the back of the jersey AND the crest look off center.
Rating: 7/10
Team Romania - Stephen T.
I feel like this is one of the hardest color schemes to work with. It's just so bold that it can make normally good looking striping patterns look not so good, in my opinion anyway. I'm afraid that's what's going on here. I like the yellow jersey best between the two. I don't like the yellow arm panel on the blue jersey. Maybe the blue and yellow swapped out on the blue jersey would look better. The crest, to me, looks off center.
Rating: 6.5/10
Vancouver Canucks De-Edge Third Jersey Concept - Steven G.
I like Johnny Canuck on the chest, I like a green uniform, but I can't get behind this striping pattern. It's different, and maybe wouldn't look so bad when being used, but seeing it laid out like this isn't doing it for me. I don't like the green armpit. I would think that should stay blue. That'd look odd if the arms were raised and there's just some green interrupting the stripe. I don't like the green collar on the green jersey, either.
Rating: 6.5/10 - I want to see this actually worn. Maybe it looks really good on the ice. But I just cannot bring myself to like it when it's laid out like this. No offense Steven.
Anaheim Ducks Concept - Jets96
Jets does the best possible thing the Ducks could do in this concept, and that's calm down their wild jerseys and tame them down. The color scheme they have would look so good in a more traditional jersey set and this concept only proves that. The black jersey is alright but the white and orange jerseys are the real deal here. I don't care for the single orange pinstripe on the pants or the orange helmet for that alternate. But, I've mentioned it before and I like the way the orange and gold look together when the a small amount of gold, like the trim on the white jersey, are up against some orange.
Rating: 8.5/10 and an COTW nom!
So everyone, there's a lot to talk about. The Kings and Ducks jerseys, and not to mention a lot of concepts today. Let's talk about it in the comments!

The Kings have a real hem stripe though, which I think makes the jersey look a lot better than it would otherwise. I haven't been able to find a full image of the Ducks jersey but it doesn't appear they have a hem stripe.
So there's the matchup. Orange and Gray. My final thoughts on the jerseys....
Ducks: I really like the orange and the new logo patch. Chrome duck foot...meh...The jersey seems very blank though without a yoke, or hem stripe. It might be too much orange. But we'll see how it looks on the ice. 7/10
Kings: Gray! I love the gray jersey look... The new patch looks great too. The chrome treatment doesn't look bad on the crown, it makes sense, but I'm still not a fan of the chrome. Disappointed that all the jerseys so far are following the same template-y look. But the hem stripe saves it. 8.5/10

And now the regular concepts! But first, an artist ID card!
Now that you've met Martin, let's start off with a concept of his....

Milwaukee Admirals Third Jersey Concept - Alan H.
Straightforward design for the Admirals. It's hard to make this color scheme look bad. Good execution. Wouldn't mind seeing some black to break up the colors in the striping though, the colors are all so bright, they kind of blend.Rating: 7/10

Why is it that Getzlaf looks like a regular fat guy wearing a Getzlaf jersey? Looks like someone accidentally gave him a youth replica jersey. I like the Kings jersey, but the Ducks orange jersey is just too much orange. It looks like a hunter safety jacket. I certainly hope that sublimated logo details will not find it's way onto any regular NHL jersey anytime soon. The "LA" and "OC" patches are cool, though.
Unrelated: On a whim, I created a Yahoo fantasy hockey league. I thought it might be interesting to compete with some HJC regulars. Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey/110543/invitation?key=c5bdfa69fb6d1c9e
I'm in Caz!
Same, I'm always down for a hky pool. Why not
Great! We can take up to six people, but we can draft with only four.
Something I noticed with the Kings jersey is that it looks like the bottom of the jersey is squared off kinda like Matt Mcelroy's template. You think he predicted it? Haha. Honestly I hate the Kings but am definitely thinking of getting that jersey.
I noticed that too Chimpy. Wonder if Mr. McElroy is hiding something from us.
Caz, I'll join too if you don't mind.
Of course I don't. Anyone who wants can join until we're full. If this goes well, I may try to do a larger one next year.
