Weekend Update (January 19)
Welcome everyone!
Hopefully you've found enough time to read this post in between NFL Conference Championship games, salty snacks, and alcoholic beverages. Or perhaps you are like me? You're a one sport kind of person, and that sport is hockey! Not to say I don't like football. I do, but I really only keep track of hockey.
The big news of the week is the winner of the 4th Quarter Vote. It was Justin C!
With the win Justin's Avalanche concept now moves on to the 2013 Concept of the Year Semi-Finals!
Take note as the Semi-Finals are two different match-ups/votes. In the first Semi-Final, Avi goes against Dylan A. In the second Semi-Final, Mike S will go up against Justin. Click on the banner to see those concepts or go to the COTY 2013 page.
We know it will be Carolina versus Colorado in the Final, it's up to you which concept artists will be represented.
Remember, anyone can vote. You ARE allowed to vote for yourself here. Voting ends on Friday. Vote now, this is very important. Lets have another good round of voter turnout. 18 votes were cast in the 4th Quarter Vote last week, so lets beat that this week!
The winner of the COTW vote for Jan 6-12 was Mat W!
The new COTW nominees have been listed on the side of the page in their traditional black banner. Click the banner to see the nominated concepts or go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK page. Again, anyone can vote and voting ends on Friday at 11:59pm Eastern time.
Voting is now live for the AHL Stadium Series Competition. Click the banner at the top of the page to see the entrants. Or you can go to the AHL SS COMP page. It's a Top 5 vote and it ends on Friday!
It seems like people had fun with this competition. I really enjoy it when I can come up with an idea that I think you guys will be able to sink your teeth into and then we get a really good response! Thanks to everyone that entered.
The new Wednesday writer for HJC is...
Come back on Wednesday to see who it is. Or perhaps Jets96 or Dylan A. will spill the beans before then. He's probably a little lesser known here, but his writing style fits in with what I want to see on the blog. He'll bring a new perspective to HJC, which is always a good thing. Give him a few weeks to settle in and soon enough he'll seem like a long time member of the team.
Do you get mad like the rest of us when pro teams put up some cool vote on their Facebook page? Then it all gets screwed up by the voting being compromised. That's why you email your votes into HJC. The only weakness of this program is when voter turnout is low. What can happen then is say only one person casts their vote, for their own concept. It's well within the rules, but now that one person has easily given themselves a very important victory. I know you guys want this 2013 Concept of the Year winner to be legitimate, so that's why you'll all stop what you're doing right now and send in your COTY Semi-Finals votes. Your COTW votes. As well as your AHL Stadium Series Top 5 votes (competition email).

What if you turned the Sunday Post into a weekly newsletter where voters subscribe to it and it is sent to their emails. They would just need to reply to the email to vote.
I used to have a Voting Committee, but it stopped working.
I also wish I had the time to put together a newsletter and email it out.
Use this weekend update as the newsletter. Maybe have a Sunday post as a review of the top 5 in the contest so we don't have to see all the contest concepts throughout the upcoming week
That sounds like two posts on a Sunday. Sorry I don't have that kind of time.
Would it be possible to have a Poll widget? I know pollcode.com offers free polls, you simple type in what you need and it generates the code you need. It also only allows users to vote once per cookies. I know some people can find a way around this but maybe its worth a shot. That way its one simple click instead of having to take the time to email.
I used to do polls like that. They are very easily compromised. Too easy for trolls to mess with them as well.
