Thursday: The Vet
Hey guys, welcome to another Thursday post.
First of all, I want to thank Alex for his time at HJC, and wish him good luck on his future. I also want to welcome Caden and Christian to the HJC team! While they're new writers on the blog, they're hardly strangers to us, as their concepts have been featured on the blog for quite some time now.
Its hard to think that it's almost been a year since I started writing on the blog, and yet here I am, one of the longest serving current writers. I remember how excited I was to get Ryan's email of acceptance, and I'm sure our new writers felt the same way.
But that's enough reflecting and introducing, it's hockey time. This week we have the votes for the COTY August, COTW, and for the DEL Redesign competition. Not many entries in the DEL competition, but there's a good chance someone will win their first competition here at HJC. So remember to vote for your favourite concepts, all it takes is a few minutes and a few difficult decisions.
Time for concepts!
Nevada Reds Concept - Zach W.
Yay: A brief search found nothing related to the "Nevada Reds", so I'll assume this is a made up team, made for the apparent NHL expansion to Las Vegas. Zach takes the classic approach with this team, in both look and name. "Reds" wouldn't be original for all of pro sports, but the name could work for hockey. This uniform set definitely looks like something a college would wear.
Nay: The logo is way way way too big. The outlining on some of the numbers looks really poorly done. The stripes might look nicer if they were thinner, especially the hem stripes. I think the logo colour and the number colours should match, like they do on the white jersey. In my opinion, if LV got a team in the NHL, they should try to shake things up and go with a flashy, modern look.
Overall: It's nice to go with a classic look, but if it's not done well, it looks boring and poorly executed. I like the idea, but it has a long way to go. 6/10
Sudbury Wolves Concept - Nathan N.
Yay: Newcomer Nathan shows us his Sudbury Wolves redesign. The Wolves have been plagued by awful designs throughout their history, so designing for them is always an adventurous risk. Nathan gives us two different looks, a green throwback and a black update to their current 3rd. The double-grey look is pretty interesting.
Nay: I'll start with the "throwback" the stripe design really makes this uniform too modern to really call it a throwback. I like the exclusion of yellow, from their old jerseys, but green still seems like a strange colour for this team. The 3rd is made more interesting with the stripes and double-grey, but the light grey shouldn't outline the white, and there should be some sort of hem stripe. On both jerseys, there's no name, number, or TV numbers, and there's also no ID for the concept artist anywhere on the image.
Overall: If you ignore the execution errors, these uniforms are still pretty ugly, but slightly less ugly than the uniforms they're updating. 5.5/10
Calgary Flames Concept - TG
Yay: My opinion on the snot-horse has been noted many times on the blog, so I'll try to ignore that and focus on the concept itself. A primarily yellow concept would be new to the Flames, but I think it would be an awesome new look. The basic but modern striping complements Calgary's style, and looks good with these colours. The maple leaf designs on the arms are a really nice touch.
Nay: I think a yellow jersey could work for the Flames, but not with this logo. The logo has too much yellow, and somewhat blends into the jersey, when it should be standing out instead. That could be fixed with a thicker outline, but I think using their current 3rd logo would be better, or sticking with the classic "C". The colours and design remind me too much about the 80's-90's Canucks, and some Flames fans might take offense to that.
Overall: It's well executed, but a different logo would make it better. 7.8/10
St. Louis Blues Concept - Matt Mc.
Yay: Matt continues his series of putting NHL teams on soccer uniforms. This concept is for the St Louis Blues. I see two different eras of Blues' uniforms in play here, and both look great. The blue jersey matches well with the modern Blues' look, and the yellow jersey has a cool 90's feel to it. Both jerseys have the perfect mix of flashy, classy, and unique.
Nay: The reason I don't like the blue jersey is the same reason I don't like the Blues' recently-retired home jersey, the thin yellow piping. I get that it matches the hockey jersey, but it's unnecessary and would look better without it. The yellow jersey is great, but the stripes suddenly stopping looks a little weird. The jersey also looks a little bare, and could benefit from a shoulder patch or something.
Overall: A very respectable crossover. 8/10
Tampa Bay Lightning Concept - Matt Mc.
Yay: Matt's 2nd concept today is for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Matt sticks to the blue and white colours Tampa Bay currently uses, and even edits one of their previous logos to match the colours, which is a great move. The lightning bolt design on the white jersey is perfect for standing out and doesn't too ridiculous or gimmicky.
Nay: The blue jersey is pretty boring, and I'm not really a fan of the high chest stripe. The bottom of the jersey could use some white. The white jersey is pretty good, but the lightning design is crippled by having the Lightning logo inside of it. Lightning-ception! Moving the logo to the shoulder, or flipping the lightning bolt so it's on the other shoulder might work better.
Overall: I really like the white jersey, but not the blue one. Decent set overall. 7.7/10
Colorado Avalanche Concept - Jamie R.
Yay: Jamie creates this Avalanche concept with a logo change that is long overdue. I love the Avs' current logo, but they're missing a huge opportunity by not using the "C" from their flag in some way. Kudos for crediting the logo properly, and while you didn't make the logo yourself, it's an excellent choice for their new look. I like the classic stripe approach with this uniform.
Nay: The logo looks either too big or too low on the jersey. I'm not really buying the yoke used here, and would rather see a round or classic yoke. I'm also not liking the black text on the white uniform. It's what Colorado does now, so it makes sense why it was done, but it always bugged me to have black numbers instead of using the maroon or blue somehow.
Overall: This concept is definitely believable, and would be an upgrade to their current set I think. 8.1/10
Sherbrooke Phoenix Concept - Ben S.
Yay: Despite Sherbrooke's colours, they have a fairly modern looking uniform. Ben fixes that and gives them a classic look that they deserve. As we've seen a lot today, simplicity is nice, but isn't always the answer. In this concept, the simplicity of it is perfect. I really like the arm stripes and equipment design, but everything here looks great.
Nay: The jerseys look great, but are just a little too plain. Hem stripes and possibly some shoulder patches could give this concept the push it needs to be perfect.
Overall: So close to perfect, but needs a little extra something. 8.6/10
Medicine Hat Tigers Concept - Justin S.
Yay: The finale of this post comes from Justin and his Medicine Hat Tigers concept. While the heritage of the Tigers should be respected, it's crazy that they haven't tried something like this yet. The Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL look great flaunting their stripes, and the Tigers should follow their footsteps and do something similar to this concept. This concept is great because it is flashy, but isn't too outrageous and tacky.
Nay: I think the jersey could be helped out a bit if there was a stripe or something on the hem. I also think the TV numbers could be more visible if it had some sort of outline around it, otherwise it's a little hard to see against the crazy background behind it.
Overall: A jersey that must happen. 8.8/10
The last two concepts are both really good, but I'll give the slight edge to Justin S's Medicine Hat Tigers concept for my COTW nomination.
No long closing speech today, as I'm off to catch the Lethbridge Hurricanes' home opener against the Tigers tonight. Don't forget to vote for the COTW, COTY August, and DEL Redesign Competition!
As always, thanks for reading, and have a good weekend!

*Screwed up...the game I went to wasn't actually the home opener. Got a little ahead of myself. Still a good preseason game though.
