Thursday: Time For a Redesign For Real This Time - Part Two

Hello everybody and welcome back to another Thursday post!

So yesterday (or sometime before this post and after last week's post) the logo for the 2016 Stadium Series in Minnesota was unveiled.

I love the logo honestly. It's unique from the other ones like they weren't, using elements from the host city, along with not just being a stadium in the background. More importantly (at least to me) I'm hoping that this could be a sign for the jerseys to come as well. Maybe they'll change what they do for the jerseys as well and move away from the modern looks to a more retro look, or possibly have different jersey templates for each team. I'm really not sure, that's just my hopes.

So as the title states I also finished up the second and final installment to my list of teams that need a redesign, just click the button to read it!

5. Washington Capitals

Not unlike a lot of other jerseys in this list, this design for the Capitals tries to hard to be modern, and the elements used to create that look don't go together well. I don't have much more to say about them really. The simplest solution would most likely be to switch over to the throwback set they have been wearing, and replace the logo with either the modern "Capitals" script like they wear now or the weagle.

4. Calgary Flames

When the NHL switched over to edge, the Flames' design stayed fairly similar...sort of. The same striping pattern was kept mostly, but the design was moved to side panels and and piping along with the arm stripes not wrapping around all the way as well. The simplest solution would be to return to the pre edge set, or a throwback set, but a full redesign could work just as well.

3. Florida Panthers

The Panthers' jersey issues are very similar to the Blue Jackets', being that this is a very templatey look. The only thing that saves it from being lower is that it isn't as plain as the Blue Jackets', but it's brought back down by the logo. My personal preference is just that the logo is too busy for a hockey jersey. The simplest solution would be to just go back to pre edge, and also possibly use the panther head that was used on the alternate jersey, without the roundel.

2. Colorado Avalanche

A logo as good as the Avs' shouldn't be on a jersey like this. It has nothing to with their previous uniforms aside from the colors, and it again looks templatey and the apron piping doesn't help at all either, and along with that there isn't enough blue on the road jersey for a good color balance. The simplest idea for the Avs would be to just go with their pre edge, but apparently it isn't possible with edge (which I really don't believe), so if that won't work just go with a full out redesign.

1. Pittsburgh Penguins AND Ottawa Senators

I've been mentioning templatey jerseys a lot, and this is about as bad as it can get. The jersey design is exactly the same for both teams, and along with that it just looks bad. The Senators also have their logo to change up, and the modern side profile logo they have would be perfect. The best solutions for both of these teams would be either just a full redesign, or use some of the alternate jerseys they've had. For the Pens go with their 91 throwbacks they've used for a year and add the away that goes to it, and for the Sens use their current alternates along with the light version as used in the Heritage Classic.

Well there you have it. The final 5 teams in my personal list of the top 10 who need redesigned. Of course it's just my opinion though. This also shows I'm not biased towards designs, with the Penguins being my favorite team and also taking the number 1 spot. On to the concepts!

Idea: Even if the concept is bad is there still a good, creative idea at the core? 1 point

Creativity: Points will mainly be taken here if the concept is a copy of another jersey, or close to it 1 point

Execution: 2 points

Realism: Would this jersey be believable to be seen on the ice? 1 point

Pizazz: Wow factor, just something that makes the concept really stand out. It's hard to do but I don't think you can have a perfect concept without it: 1 point

Other areas: Anything else on the concept, just the overall look, regardless of the other categories: 4/5 points

If I feel that one of the categories doesn't need reviewed as much as the other ones I will exclude it from being reviewed and move the points to another one. Other areas and Execution will always be reviewed, and logically the final score will just be the individual scores added up.

Brooks F. - New York Riveters

First off congratulations to Brooks for this jersey winning the contest the NWHL had, I think it's one of the best of the ones that were chosen.

Idea: They needed jerseys so Brooks gave them some (1/1)

Creativity: Definitely (1/1)

Execution: Stitching needs to stop at the hem stripe, the name looks a little too crowded near the yoke, and the yoke should be showing on the inside of the collar on the front. Otherwise solid. (1.25/2)

Realism: Especially for a smaller league like this, this is definitely realistic(1/1)

Pizazz: I'd say it stands out enough (1/1)

Other areas: 
+Unique design
+Definitely gives me "New York vibe"
+Colors are balanced well
-It's been done before, but I'm not sure there's a need to put the primary logo on the shoulders as well as the chest

-Be sure to add ID, the name on the back isn't enough

Ben S. - Big Rapids High School

Idea: From a Google search, they currently use Habs copies and a generic cardinal logo, reminding me of the Arizona Cardinals. This team could use a new set (1/1)

Creativity: Definitely (1/1)

Execution: The inside collar on each jersey should be red to match the yoke and jersey color, otherwise solid (1.5/2)

Realism: Definitely. Especially the simple design for a high school team (1/1)

Pizazz: Not really (0/1)

Other areas: 

+Good looking simple design

+Uniform makes sense for a high school team
+The custom logos look great and fit in well
-That being said, the cardinal logo could use an eye
-I would move the outer white stripes on the away jersey in to tough the blue stripes, and to match the home jersey as well

Nate F. - Stadium Series 2016: Colorado vs Detroit

Idea: Of course the Stadium Series needs jerseys (1/1)

Creativity: Nothing groundbreaking but it's creative (1/1)

Execution: The red in the Detroit logo looks different than the striping red, otherwise solid (1.75/2)

Realism: Breaks a few past "rules" of the Stadium Series but I could see this being worn (1/1)

Pizazz: Somewhat (0.5/1)

Other areas: 

+The Avs logo recolor looks great

+No black

+I like the route of taking Detroit classic

+Bringing back the mountain striping for the Avs

-I think Detroit's collar would look better in red

-Colorado has large TV numbers, a Stadium series thing, but Detroit doesn't, I would go one or the other, and my choice would be regular sized numbers

Snow Monster - Colorado Avalanche

Idea: As you could see on my list I think Colorado definitely needs a redesign (1/1)

Creativity: Uses a mountain striping pattern but is also creative enough to pass (1/1)

Execution: Solid (2/2)

Realism: Definitely (1/1)

Pizazz: Can't say yes, can't say no (0.5/1)

Other areas: 

+No black

+Interesting pants design but it works

+Nice classic looking alternate

+Great job giving two separate views of the jersey, flat and laid out and a more realistic one, along with the equipment

-Using ABCD on the backs of the jerseys is lazy. Put an actual name on there or even just "home" "away" like you did on the other nameplate displays
