Monday: Better in Blue
Welcome back to another Monday post on HJC!
Welp, my West bracket has been perfect to the Conference Finals (thank you, Brian Elliott). The East has been less than great, could have got Pittsburgh right if I hadn't picked Philly to go all 2010/Michael Leighton instead of putting Neuvirth in two games too late.
I'm sure Caz was hoping for the Preds to beat the Sharks but the teams just too good and the Sharks are rolling. This isn't the end of the Preds playoff success, they are no longer the first round exit guarantee from a decade ago. Same with the Sharks. Of course, Elliott and the Blues are going to win the Cup; they're just too good. IF the Pens put Fluery in....it's over, and the Lightning have their issues too.
Let's look at the best looking set each team could wear in their series:
Blues: 1989-1992
Pens: 1968-1973
Tampa Bay: 1995-2001
Sharks: Current Set
Disagree? Tell me what you would make the teams wear to look the best in the Conference Finals.

On to the concepts!!
Toronto Maples Leafs Concepts (By: Jordan R.)
+ The home and road are very similar to most of the current set and the pre '67 set, but it works with the logo and looks really smooth
+ 70's alternate was a good choice, translates well to edge
+ The St. Pats alternate is the best by far! I really like the full Toronto on the chest stripe instead of St. Pats, the logos are well chosen, colour are well chosen, take the money!
+ Great execution!
- The shoulder patches on the other jerseys are a little off. The 70s shoulder patch on the home and road don't really work, but would work on the alternate obviously. As for the alternate, putting the current script on the old Leaf gives it a '67 look, I get it's supposed to be a hybrid, but since it has the '67 look, it'd like putting the TML logo on the new set.
Rating: 8.5/10
Tucson Falcons AHL Concepts (By: Fernando M.)
+ This is likely for us to see if the Pirates DON't move to Springfield or Springfield picks a new name, Fernando does a good job recolouring the Falcons logo pleasingly, ditto for the Tucson patch
+ Striping emphasizes the black, like Arizona's current set, but lays it out well and is original, also very likely comping from Adidas
+ Great execution and template choice
-The hem needs a stripe! Something thicker at least, maybe adding some more black
- While colour balancing isn't the biggest issue, it would be better on the sand jersey to have a brick yoke and cuffs and use black numbers
Rating: 8.25/10
Milwaukee Admirals AHL Concept (By: Hayden D.)
+ If the Admirals were to do an NHL pride jersey or switch to Nashville's colours, emphasizing the blue would be the best way, the recolouring of the logos is very aesthetically pleasing!
+ Striping is best explained as Nashville's current striping situation on a simpler template, and it works
+ Good execution, Hayden is improving a lot and this is one of his best concepts to date
- Remember to stop the stitching at the top of the hem striping, not cutting through it
- Plain pants are a bore to look at! Add at least a logo or striping around the legs at least
- The numbers are also really generic and plain, doing a Nashville inspired jersey, I'd hope to see their best feature (numbers) used without the guitar strings
Rating: 8/10
Wheeling Nailers ECHL Concepts (By: Ryan C.)
+ I love that Ryan made the detailed factory worker as the primary and the mask as the shoulder patch, gives the team a lot more identity and gives them a good shoulder patch
+ Using Carolina's alternate jersey template and mixing in some pre-edge Pittsburgh gives the team a unique jersey but connects the team to the parent club, not just in the use of Vegas Gold
+ Great execution!
- Swap the red and the black on the white jersey to better balance the colours
- Not that the font choice is bad, but it doesn't have the same industrial feel as the logos
Rating: 8.75/10
Edmonton Oilers Concepts (By: Tyler M.)
+ It's a cool idea, combining the classic Oilers with a chest stripe and the Todd McFarlane logo
+ Good colour balancing and choices, the oil drop looks a lot better with lots of grey and white around it, and Tyler has a good idea of how to layout a jersey with a chest stripe and not cluttering it!
+ Good execution, Tyler is still improving his work
- Did you create that alternate logo? I've seen a few similar ones and if you did I'm really glad you did and it works with the look. However, if you didn't then you MUST and I do mean MUST credit the original artist, otherwise that's plagiarism!
- I like the layout and chest stripe, but using the classic Oilers striping doesn't work with the Oil Drop, I'd go for a unique pattern on the same layout
- NOB & Number is slightly, very slightly oversized
Rating: 7.2510* Baring that logo is original
North Bay Battalion Concepts (By: Brooks F.)
+ Striping pattern is really nice, has a military feel to it, but unlike the actual Battalion, there is a striping pattern to be seen, and works right into the Chevrons
+ Shoulder patch is really simple, but it works with the look and adds red to the jersey
+ Alternate is really nice! The recoloured logo looks awesome and the whole camo stripes on black stand out nicely
+ Good execution
- Striping on the alternate socks are too high
- Brooks really has done the best he can do to get the Battalion looking good with their current colour scheme, and it's pretty hard to do, but seeing the recoloured logo, I'd prefer that logo and colour scheme on the home and road.
Rating: 8.75/10
Edmonton Oilers Concept (By: Lucas D.)
+ Like the Blackhawks, the Oilers have a great secondary logo to put on their arms striping, good choice using the oil drop on the arms
+ Colours are well laid out, lots of blue and burnt orange
+ Good execution, but not without some errors
- The concept misses the mark for me with the striping. It goes put much too high an dis hard to figure out. If the stripes were all the same size it'd work, but having that oversized stripe on top causes the logo to be too high up and all the numbers to be too small
- I'd put the numbers on the shoulders to de-cluter the arms and make the proper size
- It's very minor, but the collar choice doesn't fit the jersey, it's like putting the Buff-a-Slug collar on the Montréal Winter Classic jersey, two different eras
Rating: 7/10
Minnesota Wild Concepts (By: Matt G.)
+ Thank you for finally matching the Wild's striping! That and adding some red to the green jersey
+ I really like Matt's custom logo, it reminds me of the Windsor Wild of the LNAH & the current bear, it's not an improvement, but lateral, which considering the logo, is something to be proud of
+ The red jersey is perfect, add a shoulder patch and it'd be in my collection
+ Good execution
- The jerseys need shoulder patches as mentioned
- The home and road need more red, like how the red is currently on the white jersey (red numbers)
- I'd go with totally white striping instead of wheat on 2/3 jerseys
Rating: 8.5/10
Toronto Maple Leafs Concepts (By: Jimmy T.)
+ Love the striping pattern and yoke, a good mix of eras and the Carolina-esque yoke works for the Leafs
+ This look colour totally work, if not for the errors, but there's lots of potential here
- TV numbers are much too low
- NOB is too small
- Primary logo is too high and too small
- Shoulder patch is much too small and would be all together pointless
- If you're going to use the front facing helmet template, remember the numbers
Rating: 6.5/10

Man, I came really close to making an updated "state of hockey" shoulder patch, but I chose to go for a clean, minimalist approach for them like they have for their current green uni's. They would be pretty solid if they didn't use a wordmark.
Just to clarify, the Maple Leafs concept is part of a concept series in which each team has four jerseys with the fourth in a different color scheme. The template is my Adidas Techfit Hockey template...
COTW nom to Brooks F. and the North Bay set. I love that alternate.
I'll nominate Tyler M
COTW NOM to Jordan R. Love the Tech Fit pattern used. Would love to know how you created the effect.
