Thursday: New York Soul

So it looks like we're going to have an unused logo in the NHL pretty soon.

While from a design standpoint the three cups looks better in the logo than four would, four looks much better from a Pens fan standpoint, I'll take that any day. On a similar note I wish they won the cup in those alternate jerseys, but if the prize is winning the cup they can do it in practice jerseys for all I care.

On a non NHL note, the Springfield Thunderbirds unveiled their new logo yesterday.

The designer? None other than HJC contributor and fellow concept creator Matt McElroy! Congrats on getting the job to design this, it turned out great and I can only imagine how it feels. It's a dream for me and I would assume many other concept designers to have their designs used on the ice, no matter how big or small the team, and this is no small team either. So again, congrats on this, and great job on this design.

We have three votes this week, the COTW vote, COTY May, and the HJC Open logo comp. Quick and easy, then you won't have a guilty conscience on your mind for not voting.
COTW-May vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)
COTW June 3-9 vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)
HJC Open Logo Top 4 vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)

And now we move onto the concepts, mostly New York teams today, hence the title. Let's begin, shall we? (Disclaimer: Explicit language if you go to the link)
---------------------------

Taylor R. - Prince George Cougars
+That's an interesting typeface for a hockey jersey, but I quite like it here.
+The striping is interesting too, the dark red stripe almost gives it the look of a shadow.
+I really like the look of the minimal gold trim. I think it would look good as shiny gold on the numbers and logo.
-It does blend with the white a bit though.
+Always a neat touch when the designs are the exact same on each jersey, and it balances out the colors.
-Not a fan of how the logo looks like his nose got bashed in, but that really isn't against you.
Overall: 8/10

Matt G. - Game of Thrones, House GreyJoy
First off, I've never actually watched game of thrones, so forgive me if there's a reference somewhere that I don't catch.
+The color scheme here works surprisingly well, and on the home jersey the usage of the colors really makes the logo, name, and numbers pop.
-The road jersey has a disturbing lack of color, though. I'd try to add some of the gold in there more if you can.
+That number style is a great fit for this set.
+I really like the pants design.
+The small "dots" that I assume are to give off a steel type of look are a nice touch.
+The logo placement on the alternate is odd, but surprisingly works very well.
Overall: 9/10

Avi S. - New York Islanders
+This is a great, great improvement on the Isles alternate jersey. This would make a great set for them if they were to stray from their current set.
+The colors are balanced perfectly on the blue jersey.
-Not enough orange on the white jersey though. I'd recommend switching the blue and orange on the arms (and maybe hem), as the blue pants would balance it out.
+I'm not exactly sure why, but I really like the arched name. The typeface here also fits really well.
Overall: 9/10 and my COTW Nomination

Avi S. - New York Rangers
+The Rangers are a hard team to make an actually realistic concept for, this one is one of the ones that work.
+The home jersey reminds me of an improved version of their alternate jersey.
+The yoke on the road jersey is simple and clean.
+The lack of drop shadow on the diagonal wordmark and numbers gives these jerseys a vintage feel.
+Great color balance.
-But it does take away from something that's unique to the Rangers, and essentially part of their identity.
Overall: 8.75/10

Ryan C. - New York Islanders
+Not sure why you chose an arm length yoke, but it's not too bad.
-I don't think it would work too well for their primary set though.
-If the primary color is going to be orange, there needs to be more orange on the road jersey. Orange is only trim on that jersey.
+If the alternate jersey must be devoid of color, this is a really good improvement of it.
+I like the lighthouse and fishsticks logo mashup. The lighthouse does look a bit too tall though.
-The numbers on the alt look squished vertically.
Overall: 7.5/10

Ryan C. - New York Rangers
+Vintage white is an interesting choice. I'm not a fan of vintage white in general so I'd prefer regular white, but it does work still.
+A red alternate is something that would look...really weird...but potentially really good. That design is simple enough for it to not be too radical of a change.
+I like the choice of "New York" on that jersey instead of "Rangers" too.
-The numbers on that jersey look horizontally squished now.
-The red stripes on the main set are way too thin in comparison to the other ones, and they blend into the blue a bit on the home jersey.
Overall: 8/10

---------------------------

That's all for today! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again next week.

Matt, sorry to say, I'm disappointed with the logo, not your best work I'm afraid. It doesn't encapsulate enough of what is Springfield, MA (in my experiences having interacted with the hockey community there for four years) and it also seems a little rushed despite execution.
