Thursday: Christmas Day!

Hello and Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Festivus, or any holiday that applies to you (including my personal favourite: World Juniors Eve).

I'm so glad you found the time to get away from the family, gifts and eating to visit HJC today.  I promise not to disappoint.

Nothing new going on this week besides our weekly COTW vote (which is full of great concepts this week). We'd also like to see/hear from you on what jerseys you may have gotten for Christmas. Send us a pic of you and your new jersey and Ryan will post them on the Saturday update. While I'm writing this, I'm not aware that I'm getting any jerseys for Christmas (I'll update if I do), but I'm giving my dad a Team Canada Olympic jersey.

Well I'm sure you're excited to get back to whatever else you're doing today, so I'll wrap up my ranting and get straight to the concepts!

COTW Dec 14-20 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Bemidji State Beavers - Brady S.

Ho Ho Ho:  We start today with Bemidji State of the NCAA, a very strong hockey school.  They currently wear the classic college style in green and white, but adding a logo, black and a more stylized stripe pattern really looks good on them.  The 3rd is different enough, but still looks classy and suitable for the Beavers.

No No No:  When you're jersey colour is the same as your image background colour (and they aren't white), you have a problem.  It makes for very poor presentation when the jersey almost blends in with the background.

Overall: Design-wise, very strong concept.  8.1/10

Pittsburgh Penguins - Danny R.

Ho Ho Ho:  Next up is a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey that looks more-or-less like a black version of their Stadium Series uniform, with completed arm stripes stripes, shoulder stripes, and white yoke.  It's a nice jersey that doesn't look too gimicky, too plain, or too close to it's white counterpart.  Execution is great.

No No No:  The white yoke almost dominates the jersey, which isn't good.  I wonder if a gold yoke would be better, or no yoke at all.  The jersey is a little on the boring side, as is the white SS jersey.

Overall:  It's good, just not too exciting.  7.8/10

Los Angeles Kings - David K.

Ho Ho Ho:  Next up is David's gloriously ugly Kings sweater.  Complete with trees, snow, reindeer and an appropriately recoloured Burger King logo, this uniform is perfect for the holiday season.  I'm a huge fan of ugly christmas sweater uniforms, and this is probably one of the best I've seen.

No No No: The snow numbers are a great addition, but it doesn't work as well with the TV numbers, as you effectively get black snow.  I'd just stick with regular block numbers for the arms.  The coloured collar looks somewhat out of place, but instead of losing that, I'd make the cuffs red-white-green to match with the collars and add just a little more colour to this uniform.

Overall:  Much want, so wow.  8.6/10

Florida State (NCAA) - David P.

Ho Ho Ho: David brings us back to the NCAA with this Florida State concept.  To my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong),  Florida State has a hockey team, but it acts as a Division-3 independent and does not belong in any college league.  The colours here really suit a more traditional/college design, so this design looks great.  I like the abbreviation logo used instead of a word mark or their regular logo.  The alternate fits their design palette nicely while not being too similar to the main set.

No No No:  It would be nice if the alternate had a different logo, and a coloured cuff.  It would also be nice to see some more black in the design.

Overall:  This looks like a very respectable hockey jersey for a non-hockey school.  A few tweaks and this set is golden.  7.9/10

San Jose Sharks - Jack H.

Ho Ho Ho:  Jack is next with the first of two Sharks concepts today.  These very closely resemble the Sharks' previous jerseys, before they decided to go with their current "practice jersey" set.  The differences I notice are a darker teal colour, slightly altered stripe pattern, single coloured collars and lack of a yoke outline.  I definitely like the simple, traditional approach.

No No No:  There are differences, but the design is very similar to their existing previous jersey, so there is not a lot of things to get excited about on this concept, besides the fact that I love this style a lot more than their current look.

Overall: It's good, it's well executed, it's just not unique. 7.7/10

Quebec Nordiques - Jordan R.

Ho Ho Ho:  Next up is Jordan's Quebec Nordiques concept.  Not only does the design look great, but this is a really awesome template to use.  I know I'm a little biased towards double-blue designs, but this is an absolute beauty.  The logos, which I assume are original, look great as well.  It's hard to picture the Nordiques without their classic design, but this would be a bold new replacement.

No No No:  The logos are very well done, but a little cartoony.  The front logo is a little big.  I don't like how the top arm stripe is the same colour as the rest of the arm on the blue jersey... I mean it fits the pattern but just looks a little weird.  I wish I could see the back of the uniform to see what the name and numbers look like.

Overall:  Really bold and interesting, but not quite perfect yet. 7.9/10

Quad City Mallards - Mario A.

Ho Ho Ho: Mario's newest concept might be my favourite yet, which I've been saying about most of his concepts lately, so that's a great sign of improving skill.  The yoke looks great, the stipe pattern looks well done, not too plain and not too complex and/or tacky.

No No No: The sock stripes don't match the arm stripes, the hem should be green and not yellow, the name and numbers should have some sort of black outline with it, and the logo on the front should be just a hair bigger.

Overall:  A nice design, and a good sign of improvement from Mario.  A little work on execution and you'll be getting COTW's in no time.  7.5/10

San Jose Sharks - Matt Mc.

Ho Ho Ho: Last up for today is Matt's Stadium Series fix-up for the San Jose Sharks.  I'm not exactly a fan of the style the Sharks and Kings are using, but it's certainly interesting.  Matt changes a few things by adding orange, shrinking the white, and adding a cool "wavy" arm style.  Still not my cup of tea, but definitely an improvement.

No No No:  The black outline on the name isn't really necessary, since the blue is dark enough as it is, but that's all I got to complain about.

Overall: Personally, I think their 1998-2006 jersey would be perfect for a Stadium Series game, but if we need to keep this design, then I'd much rather Matt's version of it.  8.5/10

Everyone had really good concepts, and I could give my COTW nomination to a few different people, but for the sake of the holiday season, I'm giving my COTW nomination to David K's Los Angeles Kings concept!

Thank you for taking time from your festivities to check out today's concepts! On behalf of myself and everyone else at HJC, have a merry Christmas and happy holiday season!
