Thursday: And Then There Were Four
Hello and welcome to another Thursday post!
Four = The number of months (on the calendar at least) left in the NHL regular season. Now that the annual distraction event has come and gone, we can get focused on the 2nd half of the season. Speaking of the All-Star Game, how did everyone enjoy it? Personally, the game was extremely boring to watch, but the skills competition was pretty entertaining.
Four = Also the number of concepts left in the COTY race. Yes, we're down to the semi-final for the 2014 COTY. Your job this week is to vote in BOTH matchups to determine who will advance to the finals. Send in your votes and help us determine which two concepts reigned supreme in 2014.
We also have a huge COTW vote going on this week, with 6 entries. And the World Cup of Hockey jersey phase has been extended by a week, so hopefully that means more awesome concepts coming in.

Portland Timbers - Daniel L.

Yay: First up today is a soccer-hockey mashup of the Portland Timbers. The jersey has more yellow than it's soccer counterpart, which makes sense because of the logo. This concept is pretty solid all around, but the numbering and the sides of the jersey really stand out for me.
Nay: I don't like how bust the arm striping is. Going with either the vertical or horizontal stripes would be okay, but not both. Personally I'd choose the vertical stripes (the yellow, green and white ones). The logo appears a little big, and the collar on the green jersey should be a different colour.
Overall: It's interesting, but still needs some work. 7.4/10
Carolina Hurricanes - Dylan N.
Yay: Now that's what I call pizazz! Dylan's concept gives the Carolina Hurricanes a very interesting but flashy alternate jersey. Utilizing black is a good choice, and the arm/hem design is really bold and exciting. This wouldn't work for most teams, but it's perfect for the 'Canes.
Nay: Everything in this concept is big and bold, but some of it is a little too big. The logo, back number and the name (to a lesser extent) all seem a little too big. I wouldn't use a black captain's patch on a black jersey, unless you were doing a blackout effect on the whole jersey.
Overall: Big, Bold, and Totally B.A.... 8.2/10
Philadelphia Flyers - Grant G.
Yay: Next up is Grant's Flyers alternate. Again, utilizing black is a smart move. Black hasn't been used often enough in the Flyer's jersey history, and it's time to introduce it again. The jersey style is classic and tame, suiting the Flyers perfectly.
Nay: The orange dot in the logo looks bigger, which doesn't help at all. The small silver stripes beside the white ones are barely noticeable, and it looks more like a mistake than a design choice. The namebar that fans love so much (sarcasm) needs to go: white or orange letters are fine. And the stripes on the arms and hem should have the same pattern, instead of one being inverted.
Overall: Black is good, but everything else isn't quite there yet. 7/10
Seattle Thunderbirds - Jake88

Yay: Next up is a new set for the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. I love these colours, and the traditional look that the team has always had. This concept goes from the Hartford Whalers template to something similar to the Blackhawks and Stars. It's not a new design, but in these colours it looks gorgeous. Everything I look for in a good concept is all here.
Nay: It would be nice to see some stripes or something on the pants, but that's about it.
Overall: It's not the most original set, but it's believable, new to the Thunderbirds, and looks great! 8.5/10
Utica Blizzard - Ryan C.

Yay: Last up is a concept from Ryan, for the non-successful Utica Blizzard of the UHL. They were only around for 3 years, and I could only see one uniform when searching online, which was a red/blue/black version of the 90's St. Louis Blues jersey. However, the jersey doesn't look too legit, so I have my doubts. Their logo had blue instead of black text, but this version looks better in my opinion. The jersey is very interesting but would be just crazy enough for a 90's minor league team.
Nay: The name font is too small, the logo looks a little too big, and it would be nice to see a league patch on the jersey to give this concept a dose of realism.
Overall: The concept needs some execution work, but it's always cool when a little-known minor league team gets a redesign that looks this good. 7.8/10
My COTW nominee this week is Jake88's Seattle Thunderbirds concept. If it makes it to the COTW vote, then you'll get a chance to vote for it in 2 weeks, as next week we will be postponing the COTW vote to make room for the mega vote of the year: The 2015 COTY.

It might seem big on that template but it's not. For instance the stitching on the front of the jersey barely or doesn't even show when looking at it from the view I have (like a player wearing it). The numbers just almost extend to the side stitching and the logo does too for most jerseys. So what you're seeing isn't the whole jersey as you see on a flat template but just the portion of the front and back.
Hope that clears things up.
I'm honestly not a huge fan of crazy jersey concepts, they tend to look tacky to me, but I really do like the Hurricane's idea a lot. Especially the slanted TV numbers. A+

@Anonymous I see the similarity, but I think there's enough creative changes to justify not giving credit. I could be wrong though.
@anonymous The striping in the jersey you showed is from the logo. I HIGHLY doubt that Dylan copied that work. Just because a concept has a similar look to another does not mean that the artist stole that design.
Also I don't think that the stitching near the shoulders was intentional, but that's just my opinion
@Anonymous I was trying to give another idea of an earlier concept I had for Carolina..which was months before that Snowmonster one. If I do see a concept I like and want to tweak it on my own template then yes I will give credit, but not because there are possibly some similarities. Everyday there are concepts on this site and icethetics that are simply recolors of different concepts. It's not stealing but using the ideas for other teams. Tampa Bay never credited Detroit for their home jerseys.
