Monday: Centennial Meh?

We asked and you guys delivered! Over 100 concepts have been sent in since the week where we had less than 25 concepts in a week, we have more than quadrupled since then and it's thanks to you guys! HJC does have dry spells like any place, but the response we got from you guys shows the interest people have in this blog! Thank you!

Welcome to another Monday post here on HJC, of course it's Jets96 writing again just like most Mondays since 2012.

Tomorrow is the big day for fans of logo unveilings, as for the first time since Winnipeg unveiled their logos in summer of 2011, and for the first time since the Thrashers did the same in 1999, we're getting a fresh set of logos. No history to go off of, it's not a redesign, it's a brand that this time tomorrow will exist for the first time. Ignoring the fact that the name will likely be a variant of Knight (my hope is for Desert Knights personally) or even those Hawk names we saw (Nighthawks would be cool but that was a longstanding AHL team in New Haven that is now a beer name) back in the late summer, we know very little else. My guess is with current trends we'll get a lot of less is more monochrome logos. Something similar to Army's new logos or LAFC. Simple stuff. It's not my favourite style, but it does work well on scripts (Flyers, Penguins, Panthers, Blues). The colour scheme will likely be Black/Charcoal Grey, White, Vegas Gold or Metallic Gold and Silver/Metallic Silver, but I wouldn't be surprised if they added red or maroon in there. I'd do a mock up of what I think it'll look like but frankly I can't draw but the days of full body mascots are done, it'll likely be a helmet of some sorts.

We now know the Centennial Classic jerseys! Yes this afternoon around noon EST the Maple Leafs' Facebook page changed their cover photo to this...and yeah...joy....weee...fun...

Yeah...I mean....They aren't bad...they're just super disappointing. It's such a plain design. the striping itself is very Habs/Panthers-like but that doesn't bother me as much as others, it's more so that it seems like a jersey that the Leafs would have worn in 2009 if the Stadium Series existed. Based on this jersey it's clear the Centennial Classic is going to be a futuristic game, which is fine by me, but this isn't even that...it's boring... I know I'm ragging on this jersey a bit; I think the leaked Arenas jersey got people hyped up too much. The Blueshirts/Arenas T on the pants seems questionable but it doesn't look bad...It's a lazy design...simple as that...it's not outrageous or over the top...it's underwhelming....but again...not bad. If the Leafs still wear that gorgeous Arena jersey, then I'll forgive this one.

Rating: 5.5/10 (pending a 6.5 if Arenas jersey is worn)

The Red Wings on the other hand did a much better job with this design, taking inspiration from the Cougars and Falcons.

Photo from Detroit Red Wings Official Facebook Page
Yeah I mean it's obvious to see where the arm design came from and I actually like the silver stripe with the cup winning years. The hem striping does look like the previous Leafs jerseys, but I think they're taking inspiration from the Falcons jerseys two middle stripes on the hem. The wing itself looks okay in silver, not great, but I would have predicted worse if you told me a chrome wing would be used in the future. The collar I'm not the biggest fan of, that style of collar works better for throwbacks and fauxbacks but again I think that's a call back to the Cougars (I would have gone with inverted laces myself). The shoulders need some red, perhaps not a yoke but something the Flying D from the last Stadium Series (LA reused the interlocking letters in their two outdoor games). it'll be interesting to see what font they choose for this jersey, I'd hope it had some sliver in it but I don't expect anything out of the ordinary from Detroit. Gear is also the issue, Based on some of the other photos Detroit released, there are red gloves, but nothing else, both red & white helmets are shown but the pants could be canvas or brown for all we know.

Rating: 7.75/10

Let's check out today's 10 concepts!

--------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings Concept (By: Lucas D.)

+ The lion logo taken right out of the 1998-2002 shield logo looks great as a stand alone, and thank you for keep the sunglasses on the lion (I think that's supposed to be Bailey)
+ Beautiful shade of forum blue used here
+ Simple striping, colour scheme and logo all go together nicely
+ Great execution

- Arched text seems a little too small, as does the logo, it's better they are too small than too big (especially the script) but being about 10-15% larger would fix that
- Striping is too similar to Minnesota/Toronto's '67 jerseys

Rating: 8.5/10

Philadelphia Flyers Concept (By: DT Concepts)

+ I'd definitely put this concept into the "fix 'em" category, as it doesn't deviate too much from the original, but there certainly are notable changes
+ Removing the golden numbers but adding a gold trim to the striping collar, insert and now black numbers means that there's relatively the same amount of gold on the concept, but it's more evenly distributed across the jersey
+ Ditching the coloured namebar, at least on this alternate looks so much better. If anything, extending the yoke down like Carolina's away to make the namebar not standout as much but as is it looks fine
+ Good execution

- I think it's a part of the template DT uses, but the Numbers are much too large
- Add a black outline to the yoke to balance the colours more
- If this is the 50th anniversary jersey reworked, it needs the 50th anniversary patch; if not I would have

Rating: 8/10

Calgary Flames Concepts (By: Patrick N.)

+ My favourite colour scheme in Flames history, good choice
+ Logo choices are excellent, these two go well together
+ Striping could work with a couple of changed
+ Decent execution

- The arm stripes and hem are much to low and thin, either adding more white or stretching the black/yellow would fix that
- Blank pants are black, as is the great, there at least needs to be come colour on it, particularly the gloss
- Primary logos and TV numbers are too small
- The NOB are too spaced out

Rating: 6.5/10

Nashville Predators Conceptas (By: Tyler M.S.)

+ The most common criticism of the Nashville jersey is that they use the Blues's old cookie cutter template (that really should only be used by the Kelowna Rockets)
+ Striping resembles a Tiger stripe and works for the logo
+ Good logo choices
+ The gloves look like they have claws on them, and even without the gold I like that idea
+ Good execution

- The numbers are much too plain, I would have gone with their current numbers with or without the guitar stings
- I see this issue a lot with this colour scheme, but the white jersey needs more yellow in the striping, so swapping the would work
- Blue helmet over gold helmet with all the blue on the jersey and gear

Rating: 7.75/10

Springfield Thunderbirds AHL Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ This colour scheme is admittedly hard to work with (Norfolk Admirals plus navy)
+ Alternate makes nice work of the up-wing logo, interesting striping pattern, and makes for a jersey that could be worn as a home or away with a simple helmet change
+ The striping on the jersey works well, it is very basic but the upper arm fixes that and adds some nice military colours
+ Good execution

- The numbers are a query for me, on the one hand I'd prefer something military style, they don't not work, definitely more a preference thing
- The hem could use some of the light blue on both jerseys, maybe even some yellow

Rating: 9/10

Anaheim Ducks Colour Rush Concepts (By: Avi S.)

I put these too concepts together because they are very similar aside from the gear but nominating them as different concepts

+ This jersey is gorgeous, the colours look fantastic and are very well balanced
+ Striping looks great, a smaller, more streamlined version of the Minnesota 80s/early 90s jerseys
+ Either way the gear looks good, I certainly prefer the eggplant pants to the jade ones but both are good
+ Good execution

- The primary logo could use some black in it, I get Avi wanted to scrap the black for it, but I think at least on the non-colour rush one, it would make it look better, even adding some very thin black stripes on the top of the striping

Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom from me on the alternate!

South Hill Rebellion Concepts (By: Spencer R.)

+  With the NWHL in financial trouble another league might emerge to absorb the teams, like this concept league Spencer  came up with, including a team in South Hill
+ Women's pro teams tend to use script logos, and I think it works for a home and road set, while the colours may be similar, it clearly isn't a Rangers direct copy
+ The alternate is gorgeous
+ Good execution

- Primary logo/script are both too large,
- Pant stripes should end below the waist panel
- Stitching should end at the hem stripe on the alternate

Rating: 7.25/10

Columbus Blue Jackets Concepts (By: Lucas D.)

+ Ohio flag slipped look great on the jerseys thats colour balancing will allow it
+ Good mix of the current alternate, home and road set, and more traditional ideas
+ Good logo choices, integrating the flag into the hem stripe looks great
+ Great execution

- The collars on the blue jerseys would look better if they stood out more, and the alternate could be use some lace, whether it's inverted or not don't care, both would look good
- Square font looks good on the home and road, but to differentiate it form the normal blue jersey more, using a different font on the alternate would look great
- Gear?

Rating: 9/10

Chicago Blackhawks Concepts (By: Ben S.)

+ I've been this idea on a couple much older Blackhawks concepts, and I really like it, the Blackhawks' logo lends itself well to a script above it
+ Striping looks great, a mix of the 50s, modern and the yoke stripes are a really nice throwback to the 20s/30s
+ The matching collar on the home may be too much for some, but I like it!
+ Good execution

- NOB is too low  and the numbers look squished
- TV numbers are too close to the arm stripes, with a logo on the arms you could put them on the yoke or atlas further up arm
- Lay out of the concept could use some work, particularly with regards to the helmets being so large

Rating: 7.5/10
