Monday: Whole Lotta Red
Welcome to the Monday post!
The Toledo Walleye competition is entering its second week. We've had quite a few entries come in so far, but I'm sure we will have several more in the next few days. As Ryan mentioned on the Weekend Update, Toldeo has had a very solid jersey history, but for a team that is less than 10 years old, they sure have had a lot of jerseys. So with this post I figured I'd show you a couple more of Toledo's jerseys for inspiration.
To some this jersey would fall into the "black for black's sake" category of jerseys, and you'd be right...if not for the fact the team has had this jersey since the beginning; every year since 2009. It's funny to think the team has never worn a navy version of their home or road, but a black version. The Walleye are good enough to replace the navy in the logo with black. If you want to add a unique alternate to your set, try black! The jersey you're seeing above is from the past season, as the arm striping is meant to match the Thrashers/Flyers striping of the new home and roads. Kuddos to this goalie for some awesome pads that really clash nicely with the black.
This was the first Walleye jersey to use the T backed logo, and copies the arm striping of the original swoosh striping jerseys. Looking on the tv numbers, you'll see the fin number right above it, something not see on the newest black jersey, and that is now exclusive to the home and road. There is some navy found on the kit itself, in the helmet, gloves, and pants, but the jersey and socks has zero navy to be found. I tend to prefer these black jerseys a little more, mainly due to the T logo, fin above the numbers, and the subtle colour found on the striping.
So what do you think? Black, yellow and blue or double blue and yellow? Which of these two black alternates do you prefer and why? Should more teams try a black 4th jersey, particularly in the minors?
Let's check out the entries from Walleye Comp that have come in since last post:

Great stuff! Entries are due Friday at noon EST.
Don't forget to vote for COTW this week neither, entries are found on the side of the blog in the usual poll place, votes are still due Friday!
On with the concepts!
Philadelphia Flyers Concepts (By: Matt G.)
+ Pretty solid mix of the Flyers Winter Classic and Quakers identities here
+ The arm striping on the white is a really good example where one simple change is all you need to get good road pattern rather than an inverted version of the home
+ The minimal amount of white on the home jersey works favour of the orange and black
+ Great execution and presentation
- The one thing for me that kills the white jersey for me is the black yoke and hem. While i can tolerate the all black numbers, the black yoke and hem stripe really messes up the colour balancing
- If you really want peak colour balancing, I'd add an orange outline to the numbers
- I get why in this series the home/road, alternate and vintage jerseys are separate images, but the home and road go one in another, and they aren't different enough to be reviewed separately, it'd just make more sense to me at least to put them on one image
Rating: 8.5/10
Atlanta Thrashers Concepts (By: Adam G.)
+ I really like this very dark navy (it's not black, I checked) with the Thrashers shield logo
+ Thanks to the 10th anniversary logo the Thrashers wore on their helmet in 09-10, this Thrashers rainbow striping really works well
+ Decent execution
- The white jersey's hem stripe needs some of the darker navy
- There's still some baby blue in the logos, that Adam seems to have wanted to eliminate
- Shoulder patches are too small
- No helmet logos
- Loose pixels on the primary logo on the home, and both jerseys have their primary logos set too low
Rating: 6/10
Tampa Bay Buccabolts Concepts (By: Noah B.)
+ A solid combination of both the Bucs and Bolts. I can see inspiration from both teams in this, a sign of a fantastic crossover
+ The numbers look amazing in the Bucs font, but styled like the Bolts logo
+ Remember the Bucs decently well received Colour Rush jerseys? The home jersey reminds me of that, which is a very large epositive
+ You might not see this, but the pant stripes resemble swords, like the Bolts pants...a nice touch
+ Excellent execution
- It's a template issue, but the collars are a bit thin
Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom from me!
Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Jordan R.)
+ I mean I get this is supposed to be a fix...but this isn't fixing...it's solving any and all issues the Sens jerseys have had for the past 10 years or so
+ Laurel striping looks incredible on both jerseys
+ Love the look of the alternate shoulder patch with gold
+ Nice collars
+ Fantastic execution
- Some may not mine, but I really would prefer the Sens have lots of red on the away jersey. Swapping the red and black on the away would be great for colour balancing and add something new for the Sens
- Would have loved to see a red helmet on the red jersey
Rating: 9.5/10
Toronto Maple Raps Concepts (By: Noah B.)
+ Clearly a mix of the Raptors arrow side panels and Leafs stripe numbers, it's a neat idea
+ Solid logo and number choices
+ Good execution
- Black pants would look so much better with both jerseys imho, since the white jersey has very little black and the red jersey would look better without the blood clot style pants (it works in blue, but not red
- Thicker hem stripe would fell the hem a lot more
Rating: 8/10
