Thursday: To The Victor Go The Spoils

Over the month of July the annual HJC Open Tournament was held here on HJC. Andrew G. won his way through the brackets to win the tournament. One of the prizes for winning the HJC Open was a post dedicated entirely to his work. Andrew was able to select the concepts he wants to showcase. Old or new, it was all good.

My words will appear in the regular font. Andrew's comments will appear in italics.

All of these concepts are eligible for COTW nominations as well.

Next Thursday will be the first post for new writer William! I look forward to seeing it and I think he can bring another new opinion on your concepts. Welcome aboard William!

------------------------------------------------

This post will be shorter than other posts this week so, that gives you some extra time to cast votes for all three votes going on right now. Please remember that COTY and COTW votes go to the standard email address (as written on the banners). Ducks Top 5 votes go to the competition email (as written on the competition page).

COTY-August vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern time)
COTW Sept 2-8 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern time)
Anaheim Ducks Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern time)

------------------------------------------------

Carolina Hurricanes (Andrew G.)
The first concept I ever sent in to HJC. I tried to keep the Hurricanes identity intact, but in a new, more simplified way.

For a first submission this is far beyond what we usually expect. As for the jerseys they are quality, but there's nothing about them that makes me say wow. There's nothing about them that makes me want to order one. The execution is pretty good except for the shoulder patches which should be evenly distributed on the front and back of the jersey.
(7.5/10)

Texas Stars (Andrew G.)
My latest concept for my AHL series. I took some inspiration from the Minnesota North Stars old look, and give the alternate the newest Dallas Stars' new color scheme.

I like the layout of the home and road jerseys. There are some elements I would change due to personal preference. I'd remove the collar laces as they seem to be on the jersey just because. I would try to do something new, unique, or different with the gold stripe interacting with the yokes. The Bruins' style yokes should be just that, the Bruins'. Finally I'd remove the white outline around the logo on the green sweater. The alternate isn't my cup of tea, but it does fit in with the current style of the Texas Stars.
(8/10)

Hartford Wolf Pack (Andrew G.)
The first hockey game I ever went to was a Hartford Wolfpack game. So, I was so excited this year to learn they are going back to the Wolfpack name, I came up with a traditional concept that called back to their affiliate, the Rangers, and kept their old identity in the throwback alternate.

In my opinion, I think one logo on both shoulders should be good. I think two different logos makes the jersey look unkept.Moving forward, that alternate is perfect! The white Lady Liberty template suits the Pack so well! The home and road are standard Rangers jerseys (with some alterations). I like the small cuffs on both of those sweaters.
(8/10)

New York Islanders (Andrew G.)
My personal favorite concept I've ever made. The four stripes represent (obviously) the Stanley Cups the Isles won from 1980-83. I think the Isles need a more modern alternate, without black.

I like the four stripes, but I think the ones on the arms would be more effective if a small cuff was used such as the previous Wolf Pack concept. I also like how they've been laid out white-blue-white-blue. I think most people would start with blue. The piping appears to have no purpose. Perhaps it could interact with the yoke outline better. Speaking of the yokes, I love the lighthouse logo as the shoulder patch!
(8.5/10)

Milwaukee Admirals (Andrew G.)
Probably tied for my favorite in my AHL series, the Admirals have one of the most unique color schemes around, and here it lets the black and light blue shine in a much more simplified striping pattern.

If memory serves me correctly, Andrew won the HJC Open Final with this concept...or the semi-final? My favourite part about this concept is that the black road jersey looks nice and simple and classic. Nothing changes except black and white switching and the home looks tremendous. On top of that, it uses more white than traditionally used on a white jersey. The only change I would suggest would be to keep the shoulder patches the same colour on both jerseys and just use a thicker outline on the home sweater.
(8.5/10) COTW nomination from me!

I'll second Andrew's Milwaukee concept for COTW. Congrats Andrew on winning the HJC Open! Well deserved!

Sorry, but I must respectfully disagree with that COTW nomination. The Admirals concept is great but the Wolf Pack concept is far superior. I nominate that one for COTW.

Thanks for all of the kind words. I hope to continue making concepts for a long time.
