Happy belated New Year everyone...wow is the weather in the GTA crap, like, hopefully it is a snow day tomorrow, because I don't want to go back to school...whoopee, school...anyways, enough anticipation, more HJC!

Weekend Update
Yes, here is the Weekend Update. A whole 24 hours late and not even on a weekend.
The winner of the final COTW vote of 2013 was Dylan W!
Dylan's concept now moves onto the COTY-December vote! It is joined by other December winners Tom, Austin, and Matt. Click the red banner on the side of the page to see the entrants. Voting ends when Friday ends. Anyone can vote and this one is very important on our road to determining the 2013 Concept of the Year!
The first COTW vote for 2014 is on now. We know Caleb will win, but which of his two concepts will move on in the 2014 Concept of the Year process? You help determine this by emailing in your vote. Just like 2013, the votes will end on Friday.
When I get word on the winner of the Delaware Pioneers jersey competition winner I will be sure to pass that on to you guys. Until then...patience.
Last week my wife and I drove to Ann Arbor to take in the 2014 Winter Classic. What a trip!
First, it was truly amazing to see so many Leafs fans making the same trip I was. You could stop at any rest stop along the highway on your way to Detroit and they were all PACKED with Leafs fans. Once we got into Detroit and started making the drive to Ann Arbor, again the road was filled with Ontario license plates.
Walking into the Big House and seeing over 100,000 people watching a hockey game was quite a scene. I spent the entire warm-up just looking around at everything. As you all know, the Leafs prevailed in a shootout. When Bozak put home the winner, the roar from the crowd was spectacular. It was a close game and I really should mention that almost every fan was very respectful of one another. We had our teams and we cheered for them to win. No stupid hooligans from what I saw.
Freebies were the seat cushions, I stood the whole game though. Inside the cushions were exclusive Winter Classic hockey cards. I'm not much of a collector anymore, but they are neat mementos. I also had to pick up a program.
If you get the chance to go to an outdoor game I would suggest it. Yes, the prices are high, but if you're willing to pay then you're going to have an awesome time. It's like a big party at a NHL hockey game. I paid $90 a seat for my tickets and couldn't clearly see the other end. I had to look through the glass so it was obstructed. Still, I think it was worth it and would do it 100 times over!
The drive home the next day should have been about 4 1/2 hours. However, with all the other Leafs fans heading home and some slippery driving conditions it became a 10 hour drive. That includes the 2 hour wait time to cross the boarder. Side note here, if your city is bankrupt (Detroit) I would suggest to the boarder guards to NOT discourage people from coming in and spending their money. The ass clown who I got said I had a strange definition of fun for wanting to stand outside in the cold to watch a hockey game. Then he tried to tell me how terrible the line would be to get back into Canada and how bad the weather was going to be.

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept (By: Brian B.)
Already, I think we can agree the Penguins Stadium Series jerseys are much better than the current Penguins jerseys, and Brian does a good job taking the good elements of stadium series jerseys, while adding some classic elements. The angled hem stripe and yoke tips looks good, and the normal numbers really make things look better. The arm striping is good too, but it still looks a little bland, maybe adding cuffs or some how making it match the hem striping, in having almost a zig zag pattern. Still a great concept! (8/10)
Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: Stephen T.)
Stephen develops a whole set based on the Pens Stadium Series, and again, much better than the current set. The straight stripes and curved hem striping are an upgrade, and I love the blade yoke is a great addition to the look. The execution for the most part is good, but the oversized logo brings the mark down, and maybe adding some more black to the white jersey's striping to make it more full. (7.75/10)
Team Norway Concepts (By: Mike S.)

Mike takes on the upcoming Olympics, with one of the underdog nations, Noway has good jerseys now, but adding some more unique elements to the jersey like Mike does here. Chest stripes seem to be popular with Norway concepts, and they look good, especially on the red jersey. Overall it is a very simple jersey, but the white jersey doesn't have enough red to fully balance the colours, just switch the red and blue to fix that, not major, but something that needs to be done to make the jerseys look better. (7.5/10)
Calgary Flames Concepts (By: Nick V.)
The new Calgary Flames alternate, while good looking, has been unlike to the Flames, who have played horribly in it, not to say they play well anyways, but I digress. Nick simply adds the current Flames primary to the front of the jersey and keeps the cool new shoulder patch..and yeah...it looks good. The striping matches up well and the Reeboky elements are gone. I think the white version looks better, but that's the way I think with all Flames jerseys. The full body player models needs work, the shading should be done to match the jersey colour, not just gray, and the TV numbers look skewed, but still, looks better than the current flames look. (7/10)
Norfolk Admirals Concepts (By: Kyle N.)

Kyle N., welcome back! Kyle returns to the HJC rotation, continuing his AHL redesign, with another team which might be getting a future re-design, the Norfolk Admirals. The striping is nice a vibrant and detailed, eye popping on the white jersey, not a much on the blue jersey, the white and yellow bleed into each other. The alternate is cool too, seems very classic and trendy, but the lack of white hurts the jersey, since it is on the other jerseys, and would liven things up. (9/10)
Toronto Maple Leafs Concepts (By: David K.)
David combines eras with this Maple Leafs concept, combining the 30's, Arenas, 90's and 60's along with some very odd ideas, which altogether creates a very odd but cool concept. I like the logo, would be good on the helmets, and the 60's/current alternate striping is a great look for the leads. The maple leaf cuffs seem like a bit much, and the yoke striping looks a little too confusing, since it doesn't match the hem striping, but rather the socks. I'd either change the jersey striping to match the yoke or vise versa, but I love creative concepts like these! (8.5/10)
Vancouver Canucks Concepts (By: Ben S.)
Another De-edge series! This time, Ben takes on the creative idea of going back to 2006 templates, starting in Vancouver. Goodbye Whale, here's Johnny! Ben keeps the current striping and adds new logos, socks, font and a new shoulder patch. Keeping the striping a good move, and the Johnny Canuck head logo is a strong primary. The stick in rink is a solid shoulder patch, and well executed, but the same can't be said for other elements, minor though. The primary logo is a little bit small by 20% and the vector should be replaced with the Reebok Script. (7/10)
Anaheim Ducks Concept (By: Patrick E.)
Patrick takes an aim at the original Mighty Ducks jerseys, straightening their stripes, and getting the sassy Duck Mask alternate the primary treatment. The idea is good, the striping is nice a contrasting, with minimal white or silver and eggplant in between each stripe, I like that. I wish the white and silver stripes were thicker and that the socks matched the arm striping. The execution errors lie in the numbers and the primary logo. The front logo is way to big, it would be a giant circle on the player's chests and would extend up into the collar. The shoulder patches are too pixely, and shrinking the logo in word will help, and the numbers just need to be moved out of the yoke and back onto the arm like they should be. (5.5/10)
Quebec Nordiques Concepts (By: Dallas K14)
The Nordiques are coming back, that is almost guaranteed with the new arena, but their new jersey, should they be the same or do as Dallas has done here. The striping is great, I love the idea, especially the roundel logo, not something a lot of artists use because the Nords never did but hey, looks good with the darkerish blue. The striping with the Fleur du Lis is a great striping additive, and makes up for the lack of striping the previous Nordiques jersey had. The Q shoulder patch, while needed, doesn't have the red the logo does, and would look much better with a secondary colour. (9/10)
Chicago Blackhawks Concepts (By: Dallas K14)

Dallas has another concept today, adding some very vintage ideas to give Chicago a new Stadium Series jersey, and I prefer this. The large hem and arm striping work with the modern Stadium Series jerseys and are a nice throwback without getting too gaudy. The addition of red, I didn't like at first, but I like it now, especially on the logo, but not so much the tie down or the striping without some separation. Still, a yes one size fits all approach to the Stadium Series, and one a lot more people would buy. (8.75/10)
Winnipeg Jets Concepts (By: Stephen T.)
And thus we come to the end of our post! Another end comes, as Stephen T. ends his NHL Re-design! A great series to see, no two concepts were a like and a lot of effort was put into each and every one of the entries, from A-W, Congrats on completing a series and one so great. Stephen throwsback to the days of Steen with this concept, adding red instead of lighter blue and giving the Jets a mix of modern and classic. Keeping the striping modern was a good move, as it is the best part of the Jets' current look, as well as the numbers and the logo. The new arm bands are also cool, taking inspiration from da 80's. The logo is too small though, and the jersey would benefit from some sort of hem stripe, even minor. Still, great series, and look forward to more, Stephen! (8/10)

Nords jersey is most deserving of COTW nomination to me. Sure, the Q patch needs improving but this is one of the better Nordique concepts I've seen recently that 1) stays true to the original and 2) updates and improves the jersey.
Thanks! Yeah I went with the "Q" logo because it's the old Quebec Bulldogs logo from way back...probably should have outlined it in red though
