Monday: The First Of Many!

Hey there HJCers! Feels kind of odd typing this for a Monday after writing for Tuesdays for a while... I think now Saturday might actually be the only day I haven't written a post for between two stints as the Tuesday writer, a few months as the Wednesday writer, filling in for the other writers, and even filling in for Ryan on a weekend update. I would like to wish Alex and Phil the best as they move on. I'd also like to wish the new writers luck as they get started here at HJC. So with almost half of the writing lineup being changed up, let's get this new era of HJC started!

Speaking of getting started, let's get the week started off right by voting for the COTW, COTY, AND the DEL competition.

COTY-August vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW Sept 1-7 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
DEL ReDesign Top 5 vote (ends Saturday @ 11:00am Eastern)

So let's get to this Monday batch of concepts

St. Louis Blues Alternate Jersey Concept - Nathan N.
Don't forget to ID your concept Nathan! As for the concept, it's a recolored practice jersey with no name. The shoulder patch is rotated incorrectly as well. And there's only one set of tv numbers with no reason for the other to be missing. The logo is intriguing. I'd like to know where you got it as well, it's a neat concept I've never seen. I have trouble believing it's a custom logo with some of the errors in the concept. I wouldn't mind seeing something new with that logo though.

Carolina Hurricanes Alternate Jersey Concept - Connor J.
Connor wants to swap out the Cane's black alternate for something a little more modern, if that was possible. The arms are a bit more classic and nothing wrong with that. The striping is a little blocky though. The hem stripe is where things get unique. The hem stripes look more like piping which I don't care for. I don't care for the stripes ending at the stitching. What if the silver stripe was above the red and white on the front but under the red/white on the back. I think that'd be worth at least trying. It's way different and something new.

Wild Wing Crunch - Ducks Cereal Concept - Mario A.
This is pretty bare for a cereal box. The idea is killer though. Maybe have Wild Wing coming out of the cereal bowl. The font on the bottom of the box is ok, but find a new bolder font for the name of the cereal. Something that can be seen from a bit back. If this was in a store you'd want people to see that name and this font doesn't really do that. I'd take a bit more time and try to refine the cereal bowl on the box before calling this done. Make it bigger, take up way more of the bottom of the box. Put the cereal inside the bowl as well, and not dancing on top. I'd say put this through a round or two of revisions and take more time on it and I wouldn't mind seeing it again. Pretty sure this is the first cereal concept on this site and the idea is killer.

Haileybury Comets (NHA) Concept - Alan H.
Not a big fan of the Sabres template here, it doesn't look bad but it doesn't bring anything new to the table. The clash jersey isn't necessarily unique but I am a fan of how the yoke stops at the stitching on the back. Gotta say I really like the team's clever name but the color scheme is too dark for a team named the comets. I say add a bright trim color.

New York Rangers Soccer/Hockey Crossover Concept - Matt Mc.
I've been loving this series and it's really making me want to start my own soccer crossover or finally finish the MLB hockey series I started well over a year ago. The good ol' Rangers. I love the use of the vintage shield. The sash striping on the primary is neat. Reminiscent of their "RANGERS" wordmark from their hockey jerseys. Not as big of a fan of the clash kit here. I wouldn't mind the vintage white shirt but not big on the shorts. I'd stick with red or even go blue. I kind of want something more on that shirt as well. I don't know what though... I think you can keep the Nike logo in the sash on the primary, I don't think they'd move it.

UAA Seawolves (NCAA) Concept - TG
The jersey template used is one of my personal favorites. Love the Flyers-esque arm yoke that wraps around the cuff. So this strikes a chord with me. I love the color scheme too. Bold. Nothing really new here but I'll be damned if I don't say this doesn't look sharp. Not a huge fan of the wordmark on the yellow jersey but it's an alternate so I'm a little ok with it.

Calgary Flames Alternate Jersey Concept - Tristan M.
Classic look here for the Flames. Not a trace of black. Something I wouldn't mind seeing them go back to. I think it'd be really cool to add the yoke stitching from their current alternate but keep it red. Something you can only see from up close. The striping is nice as well. Again, nothing we haven't seen but it's hard not to go to looks like this, it just works.

New York Islanders Soccer/Hockey Crossover Concept - Matt Mc.
This Islanders set looks great. The blue and orange kit fits their brand perfectly while the black and white fits their current future. Although, I do think that the black kit could use some blue and/or orange. Just doesn't feel complete without it. Some orange/white on the shorts and socks of the primary kit would be nice too.

I do like the idea behind the Isles kit. Normally however, if I were to have a shirt with a different color shoulder than the bottom half of the shirt, I'd keep the shorts the same color as the bottom of the shirt. The black kit is a nice clash kit similar to those you see in soccer, like Man United's blue kits.

I think the black and white is supposed to be like the Nets

@Zach - That's what I meant by their current future. They're moving into Brooklyn and word is they're going to adopt a black/white alternate.
