Monday: Something Funnier Than 24

Welcome back to another Monday Post!

All Star Week is upon us, and while we're all disappointed in the jerseys and glad John Scott is playing before he's shipped back to Newfoundland (Don't diss Newfoundland though), a lot of jerseys have been unveiled in other leagues, thus, Jets96 will now go over them, and refer to himself in the 3rd person.

AHL Jersey News:

Back in Newfoundland, the IceCaps have a new 3rd jersey to replace their popular previous one, however, this one is to honour a good local cause.

For those who don't know, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment is the military division in Newfoundland, who famously suffered huge casualties in the Battle of the Somme in WWI and my great grandfather was a part of (and lived)! So obviously I'm a huge fan. the logo is beautiful, the jersey is Canadiens esque, but the red arm is unique enough that I like it. The jerseys were sold in limited quantity and portions from the sales are going towards the modern regiment. It's nice to see teams do military tributes that aren't just camouflage or gaudy stars & stripes.

Rating: 9/10

In Manitoba, the Moose did something weird, became Polar Bears for one night...yes you read that right, polar bears. For those who know Manitoba, Churchill is where you find the polar bears, Winnipeg is too far south.

I have to say, I really like the Jets template in light blue, it really works with the arctic theme. The logo itself is quite nice and it'd be sad to it be one and done, this would make a nice 3rd. The jerseys were in support of a Polar Bear rescue team in Manitoba, so when the bears run out of Coca Cola they don't run around accidentally mauling people trying to ask for moe. It's another good jersey for a good cause, it may be just a recoloured Jets/Moose/IceCaps jersey, but that's the name of the game in the AHL now.

In Lake Erie...or Cleveland, the Monsters are paying tribute to the NHL team no one watched or liked until they realized how cool the jerseys were, the Cleveland Barons.

I really like the Barons jerseys, especially the Ohio state numbers. The team really had a nice look, and I like that the Monsters pay tribute to their previous teams, first the Crusaders and now the Barons, it's nice. It isn't the most creative jersey we'll see today, but it's still pretty awesome to see these jerseys take to the ice, and they are once again to be auctioned off. Not gonna rate them because it's a direct throwback.

In the Q, the Charlottetown Islanders have done what the Pens are afraid to do, unveil a Vegas Gold jersey. Yes, a Vegas Gold jersey...

Photo from charlottetownislanders.com

You know, it's not athletic gold or anything, but I like it. It's a very simple jersey, but frankly, anything with vegas gold should be. It's nice to see the Islanders use their primary logo instead of a Rangers script. It's also nice to see a team use flag patches semi decently, with the PEI & Charlottetown flags instead of a Canadian flag (I think most people know Charlottetown is Canadian).

It's nice to look at what the minor & junior A leagues are doing.

On to the concepts!

---------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Alan S.)

+ A really creative concept here! A scary one since if this happened it'd be frightening but still, points for thinking outside the box
+ The logos designed really don't look too bad, of course they are meant to be Clippers like but the Ottawa script with the leaf under it and the O with the leaf really look good imo
+ It's close to the source material
+ Good execution

- The O looks like a 0 on the red jersey, making it look like it says 0 maple leaf 5, like the Sens are losing or something
- Captain's Cs & Adidas marks are too small
- Shoulder patches are too small and there should be one on the red jersey

Rating: 8/10

Stadium Series Concept (By: Brad De.)

+ Great idea for the Flyers not using the P logo and instead something city related
+ Nice simple striping, but the jerseys are eccentric enough
+ I'm always in favour of vertical stripes that don't look awful, like this
+ Round numbers

- The Captain's C is too close to the caller and a little too small
- Pens primary is too large
- Shoulder patches?
- Pant/helmet logos?

Rating: 7.5/10

New Orleans Pelicans Concepts (By: Jay S.)

+ Good job using the New Orleans numbers and good logo choices, taking character from the actual jerseys
+ I really like the striping pattern and the colours are nicely balanced
+ Good logo choices
+ Decent execution

- The striping is much too thin, which makes the tv numbers too bit to fill up the remaining space
- Don't forget the numbers on the front of the helmet

Rating: 7.75/10

Air Force Academy Falcons Concepts (By: Brad De)

+ I like that the intense falcon logos isn't used, the AF looks great as a primary logo
+ Great colour choices aside from one thing
+ Rounded numbers
+ Good execution
+ This template isn't used very often, but it looks really good

- Blue socks on the blue jersey would look way better
- Pant logo?
- Colouring on the gloves is pixelated with white dots all over it

Rating: 8.5/10

Ferris State Bulldogs Concepts (By: Taylor R.)

+ Really nice striping, it really matches the logo and has a cartoony vibe to it
+ Execution is great
+ Colours are also well balanced on both jerseys, this is how to balance them between sets
+ Small detail, but the league logo is done perfectly, take note

- Captian's C is a bit too large, it does have a vintage feel to it but it doesn't work with the rest of the jersey

Rating: 9.25/10 COTW nom from me

Grand Rapids Griffins Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ While I'm liking the Griffins in black, bright red and gold look good too
+ Nice numbers, they match the logo very well
+ Northwestern esque striping works for almost any team
+ Great execution

- The jersey is a little bland, with such an exciting logo
- The shoulder patches need to be recoloured to match the new/old colour scheme

Rating: 8.5/10

Team USA Concept (By: Jake C.)

+ I like the idea of a USA concept with swooshes that has lots of red, this is a good idea
+ Like seeing the USA eagle
+ Shoulders are done right

- The execution leaves a lot to be desired, the NOB and back numbers are done fine, but the tv numbers need to be angled, there's a tutorial for that in the tutorial section
- The logos are really pixelated, especially on the front
- General rule- outside of europe, scripts under the numbers don't work

Rating: 5/10

New York Rangers Concept (By: Glen W.)

+ Rangers can certainly pull of grey
+ It's minor but I like the curved name bar a lot
+ Glad to see Lady Liberty back

- Red numbers on the chest stripe don't work, and are much too big
- The primary logo is much too small, as is the chest stripe
- If you thinned the arm stripes, you could put the numbers where they belong and put a shoulder patch

Rating: 5.5/10

That's the post!
Don't forget to do your voting duties
Have a great week!
GO Jets, Moose & Mooseheads!
