Monday: Ahoy, Readers!
Welcome to another HJC post, of the Monday variety!
No new jerseys news, but then again we're only waiting on 3 NHL jerseys (Philly SS and the ASG jerseys) which we can expect before or very close to after it.
That being said let's look at what the Wheeling Nailers wore this past Saturday and how we get a good look at something teams seem to now want to or like to try, a baseball/hockey crossover
So yeah, let's see what we got here. The jersey itself I think is done well, after all the late 70s-early 80s Pirates jerseys did actually have striping. I really like the yoke being based on the famous pillbox hats of that era. However the biggest issue comes with the logo. That might be the factor that makes these types of crossovers unpopular, the vast majority of baseball jerseys don't use logos on their jerseys, and most of their hat logos don't make good hockey primary logos. Script logos have been hit and miss in hockey, but this style of script does not work in professional hockey, certainly reminds me of NCAA/U Sports (The new name for the CIS). So what could the Nailers do? Best choice would be put their logo on this. Simple as that. The striping is beautiful, but this is a Wheeling Nailers jersey, not just a Pirates hockey jersey that says Nailers on it.
So...how would you attempt a baseball/hockey crossover? What strategy should teams attempt, and are they a concept idea you'd like to attempt? What about the inverse?
Look forward to the discussion in the comments.
COTW has reset for the week, and don't forget to go back to Saturday's Weekend Update to vote for week 4 in The Season; it's crunch time!
Let's check out some of the COTY 2016 logo entires:

Great stuff, remember that entries are due this Friday!
On with today's 4 concepts. Concept submission has taken a downturn but it is exam time for us university & college students, but keep them coming as your schedule allows!

Dallas Stars Concepts (By: Lucas D.)
+ Great colour distribution on the home and road, particularly the road, that looks really nice!
+ That alternate is really sharp! A 1993ish fauxback with the modern logo and numbers look great
+ Good execution
+ One improvement made over the original is replacing the black part on the green jersey with green
- The numbers on the white jersey are too hard to read imho
- All 3 jerseys need a shoulder patch
- Black and green jersey need different coloured collars to help them stand out
Rating: 7.75/10
Kingston Frontenacs OHL Concepts (By: Jamie R.)
+ The cartoon logo of Louis de Buade de Frontenac, former governor general of New France (there's your history lesson for the day)was arguably one of the most misused logos in OHL history, it never looked bad per se, but it was slapped on a Stars pre-edge copy and looked out of place, Jamie gives us proper jersey
+ Great use of all the colours of the old logo, and excellent colour balancing on both, even if the jerseys are nearly identical it looks great
+ Fauxback alternate looks good, Bruins inspired but not a total ripoff
+ Good execution
- One change I'd make to the white jersey would be using black or even grey numbers
- Yellow jersey could use a shoulder patch
- Blank pants
Rating: 8.75/10
New York Islanders Concept (By: Avi S.)
+ Avi usually sticks to traditional hockey patterns, but here I like he's taken the modern elements of the Islanders most recent alternates like the NY logo and the numbers
+ Great striping pattern, that was one part of the black alternate I'd hope they'd keep it on a similar alternate
+ Colours are balanced well across the entire jersey, I'm glad Avi didn't use orange gear or worse use no orange on the jersey aside from the numbers, as that would just be a swap of their current black jersey with orange
+ Excellent execution
- I like the blue numbers, but a white NOB might look better
- The shades of orange in the logo and jersey don't match, I think this might be like Montréal where their gear and jerseys don't match
Rating: 9.25/10 COTW Nom from me!
Colorado Avalanche Concepts (By: Taylor R.)
+ The more I see it, the more I like the Avs' Stadium Series jerseys, and I'm seeing some inspiration of it in this concept
+ The arms striping looks really nice, even with the off number placement I really like it
+ Great logo choices and collar design
+ Great execution on top of that
- This is simply preference but the burgundy jersey would look better with a burgundy helmet
- While the white jersey and arms look fine with the monochrome numbers, the burgundy back could use some more colour, at least on the numbers
Rating: 9.25/10
