Friday: Throwback Friday

It's time for another installment of everyone's favourite segment, Today in HJC History!  February 3rd has been a fairly big day for HJC, it includes the unveiling of two COTY winners, plus a review of an NHL team's new primary logo.  So let's take a trip down memory lane, starting all the way back in 2010.

February 3rd, 2010 (No Post)

There was actually no February 3rd post back in 2010, but the previous post on the 1st is an interesting one to look back on.  On that post Ryan talks about the two trades the Leafs had just made to acquire Dion Phaneuf and JS Giguere.  He wisely said, "Only time will tell if these guys work out."  Looking back, the trades weren't awful, but they didn't bring much success to the Leafs either.

The post on this day back in 2011 was written by Glen (HJC's first guest writer), as part of his NHL Rebrand series.  It features his concepts for the Blues, Sharks, and Lightning.  The Blues concept (shown above) is my favourite of the three, but the other concepts are nice as well.

On February 3rd in 2012, it was announced that Josh's Lethbridge Hurricanes concept won the 2011 COTY.  This concept actually made it off the computer screen and into real life, it became the Hurricane's third jersey (with a few minor changes) starting in 2012-13.

The COTY winner was also announced on February 3rd in 2013.  That time it was Justin winning the 2012 COTY with his Ottawa Senators concept.  Also announced was the news that HJC would have seven posts a week moving forward (previously there were only six, with concept posts from Monday to Friday, and a weekend update on Sunday).

February 3rd, 2014

2014's February 3rd post was a regular concept post.  WinnipegJets96 talked about high school graduation, plus there were 14 concepts including two from Jordan's "Winter Classic Games of the Past" series (his 1986 Winter Classic concept shown above).

The post on this day in 2015 was also a standard concept post, written by Caden.  He discussed the 2015 Super Bowl (like most people, he wasn't a fan of the Seahawks decision to pass the ball from the one yard line with 26 seconds left in the game), and then he reviewed six concepts including Dylan's 2015 All-Star Game concept (shown above).

Exactly one year ago today I reviewed the Toronto Maple Leaf's new logo, which had been unveiled the previous evening.  At that time I approved of the new logo, saying "I love it" and giving it a 9/10 rating.  After a year I still feel the same way (I might even bump up my rating to a 9.5/10).  The post also featured a Quebec Nordiques concept from Matt, which was nominated for COTW by six different people (that might be an HJC record).

On to the contest entries!

On to the voting reminders!

--------------------------------------------------

The latest polls ended today at noon Eastern, including the 2016 COTY vote!  You'll have to come back tomorrow to find out who the champion is.  This upcoming week we'll have the standard COTW vote, as well as the St. Louis Eagles competition vote.  Don't forget to cast your vote once the polls have been posted.

COTW Jan 27 - Feb 2 vote (ends next Friday @ noon Eastern)
ST. Louis Eagles vote (ends next Friday @ noon Eastern)

On to the concepts!

--------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Flyers, by Zack H:
Our first two concepts of the day come from Zack, starting with this Philadelphia Flyers set.  I like the design of these jerseys because they slightly remind me of the Philadelphia Quakers, and because the stripes match the logo (since Zack used the version with the extra black outline).  I also like the numbers in the sleeve stripes, but I don't like how the yoke extends down and crowds the sleeve stripes.
Rating: 7/10

New York Rangers, by Zack H:
Zack's second concept redesigns the Rangers, while still keeping the general feel of the jerseys intact.  I'm a fan of the new bolder striping pattern, it's looks very vintage which fits for the Rangers, plus it matches between the home and road jersey better.  I just think the sleeve stripes should be lowered a bit, so the sleeve numbers aren't so crowded.  Also the name on the home jersey is a bit hard read, it be better with a thicker outline or in solid white instead.
Rating: 8/10

San Jose Sharks, by Jay S:
Next up we have a San Jose Sharks third jersey concept from Jay.  I really like the striping pattern of this jersey, especially how much teal is used.  On their own I'm also a fan of these logos, but I don't think those two elements fit together.  The logos are dynamic and have lots of movement, but the striping feels static and restrictive (especially the sleeve stripes enclosed within the yoke).  As for the execution, it's pretty good except the outline of the primary logo is quite pixelated.
Rating: 7/10

San Jose Barracuda, by Lucas D:
We also have a San Jose concept from Lucas, but his is for the AHL's San Jose Barracuda.  He created a striping pattern based off of the background of their logo, which is great because it both makes their jerseys unique and somewhat hides the fact that their logo's background is an advertisement.  I also like the use of silver in the striping, since it gives the Barracuda a bit more of their own identity.  I just have one question though, why are the shoulder logos upside down?
Rating: 8/10

Chicago Blackhawks, by Lucas D:
Lucas's second concept, and our last of the day, is a redesign of the Chicago Blackhawks.  He uses black as the primary colour, and a striping pattern which uses contrasting shoulders on one jersey but not the other.  The end result is an interesting old school look which I think looks very nice.  I'm also a fan of the single colour numbers, as well as the collars that match the stripes.  My only complaint is that Lucas used this same design for a Golden Knights concept yesterday, I would have preferred if more changes were made between the two concepts.
Rating: 9/10 and my COTW nomination.

On to the conclusion!

That's all for today folks!  Come back tomorrow to find out who won the COTY 2016 vote!
