Monday: Sens Triple Pack

Welcome to another Monday post.

Right now we're looking towards Edmonton, Pittsburgh, and Ottawa rolling towards the conference finals in full stride, while Nashville and St. Louis are deadlocked as expected. I do see Nashville pulling through, but if St. Louis is able to return to the Conference Finals, they'll be tough for Edmonton to beat. I want to see a Canadian team win the Cup (even if it's Ottawa), but I was full on the Blues bandwagon last year, thanks mostly to Brian Elliott's amazing run. I can't say I feel the same about Jake Allen yet (though he certainly has had his shut down moments in the first round), he has proven he can not only face adversity in a mature way, but overcome it. He's clearly a better goalie between last year's conference finals and post trade deadline. Some of you might be wondering why I've counted Anaheim out, despite their pretty solid win last night, and that's because I feel this Edmonton team, in spite of its lack of playoff experience and maturity, will rebound quickly. This is something every young team goes through. In my opinion, youth that can turn around from a crappy game will always win a series over experienced teams that get one deceive win. If the Ducks do prove me wrong, I'll say I'm surprised, but also see them as a cup contender in that event.

Jersey news is particularly thin this time of year, as every league from the CHL to NHL are at least in the second round of the playoffs. This will obviously change as early as the Cup Final with unveilings and leaks that will come leading up to the draft. Will it be Vegas getting leaked first, or will it be one of the other 30 teams to have their adidas jerseys leaked? The only piece of news I could see coming before this period is the Golden Knights' AHL and ECHL affiliates. Will it be Reno? Or will we see them purchase an existing franchise and it'll be another team's problem to find a new location for their affiliate?

Voting for this week is really simple, just a quick and easy COTW vote. Concepts are on the side of the blog or clicking the COTW tab that's always there.

Let's check out The Random Competition entires that have come in since last post:

Great stuff! Entries are due Friday at Noon EST. Remember to read the colour list for the team you plan on making a concept for to ensure you're fully following the rule; this is one competition you wanna be 100% sure!

On with today's 7 concepts!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Komarov-Thamko Concepts (By: FC Macbeth)

+ So for those like me who had not idea who Ren & Lin Kagamine are, they're characters from the Project Diva rhythm games that are popular in Japan, I like seeing different inspirations being used for concepts and when artists take the time to explain them
+ The flag for this non-existent nation has a lot of different symbols, but FC Macbeth has managed to get most of them on the jerseys
+ The basics of the execution are here, better done on the white jersey

- One of the biggest flaws these jerseys have is that they do not match. That doesn't have to be a bad thing but there's nothing to connect them. Between the two I'd chose the colour lay out of the away jersey, but if the Rin & Len connection means that much then go with that
- The primary logo on the home should be on both jerseys, as it seems the KMT and stripes are actually the logo, which in ether case both are way too large
- Scrap the word fonts and do what you've done on the white jersey
- Problem with the numbers on white jersey is the 2 is clearly different from the rest of them
- Striping should be thicker on the hem of the red jersey
- Sock stripes are too high up
- Gear with the away jersey is too similar to Montreal with no changes, should have some yellow on it, ditto for the collar to change it
- Don't forget helmet logos, and put the logos on the home pants closer to the front edge where it would be visible from the front view of the player rather than the centre of the pants

Rating: 4/10- Don't be discouraged by this rating. Keep making the concepts you want to make, learning to better your execution that comes with practice and time, and sooner than you think the number will go up

Ottawa 67s OHL Concept (By: Anthony C.)

+ A good combination of the 67s late 90s puck jerseys, and a generic scrip that reminds me obviously of the 72 Summit jerseys jerseys, but from the same era the Ottawa Nationals/Civic of the WHA
+ One problem the original versions of this leaf pattern was the silver outline and being too wide that it looked more like an explosion than a lead, obviously this has been corrected
+ Much better font used for the numbers and NOB

- The shoulders could really your a patch, either the O logo or the angry puck
- Big execution error on the back collar, where it should be red but has been left white
- Remember to put the OHL, Reebok/CCM and CHL logos in their appropriate place
- The script logo looks great, but scrap the numbers under neither

Rating: 6.75/10

Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ Great logo choices
+ The striping used here, to me at least, is the best way the Edge Piping could have been used in 07-08, and it still hols up well here; the thick lines remind me of an adidas tracksuit
+ Pretty solid colour balancing, I don't mind that the sides on the white jersey aren't red, but it looks fine as is
+ Good execution

- Not a fan of the font chosen, it's close to what I'd want to se here, but this looks like something the Lightning would have worn in 1993; go with the current font or even the pre-edge red/alt jersey font
- One improvement to the logo choices I'd make would be the Peace Tower logo to the shoulders, the O logo is great on the pants but using a logo with gold will tie the set more together
- Fair amount of loose pixels in the collar, it's not bad but slightly noticeable

Rating: 8/10

Ottawa Senators Concepts (By: Anthony C.)

+ Combining the inaugural Sens jerseys with the 3rd current jersey shield and the laurels all work together well; it's a good combination
+ Also good call putting big bold red numbers in the stripes

- Primary logo is too small
- Same issue with the stitching on the striping but I have a feeling Anthony sent a lot of concepts at once so I look forward to seeing that correction
- White collar on a white jersey without a yoke almost never looks good, go with a black one
- It's a minor point, but the cinacon logo is already on the bottom of the concept, I don't think it needs to be on the jersey too

Rating: 6.5/10

Ottawa Senators Concept (By: Ryan HJC)

+ Another great combination of 3 distinct 92 Sens eras
+ Perfect logo choices here
+ The font here isn't anything the Sens have worn (to my knowledge) but it works really well, particularly that the numbers aren't totally block, but not fully rounded
+ The hem stripe reminds me a lot of the cape on the logo, looks great!
+ Great execution, but I might have to downgrade that to good if this one issue is actually an error

- I'm trying to figure this one out, but the shoulder patch doesn't continue to the back side as it would normally. I don't know if that was intentional or not and some explanation would help
- I'm split on collar lace, it doesn't add anything to the jersey (aside from a little bit of white that teh jersey needs) but it doesn't look bad either

Rating: 9/10

Edmonton Oilers Concepts (By: Ryan C.)

+ Nice to see the return of the oil drop numbers, maybe in a more rounded form
+ A nice mix of new striping, but still keeping the original colour lay out
+ White it does have one major issue, in keeping with the style of the current away jersey, I like the look of this one
+ Fan of the arm script
+ Good execution

- The one thing that MUST be kept from the original orange jersey is the collar style, not the colour lay out but the overlapping style
- The colour balancing on the white jersey is really poor, but like the Penguins away it still works, so I mean I do think an orange yoke and main stripe would look better, this isn't as bad as it could be
- If the script is on the arms twice, it's overkill to be on the pants too
- Still no outline on the helmet numbers

Rating: 8/10

Toronto Arenas Concepts (By: Jordan R.)

+ It's hard to keep intact the look of a team that hasn't existed since 1919 and still make it work, but the primary with the script above does it
+ Striping is similar to the Leafs/Arenas, but doesn't look like an exact copy
+ Modern Adidas collar style works really well here
+ Good execution

- Hem stitching needs to be fixed to stop at the stripe

Rating: 9/10
