Wednesday: Work Sucks

Quick intro this week I just got back from work with an hour to spare before this went live.

NEWS: The Baby Sens unveiled their logo for the move from Binghamton to Bellville.

Having this as the primary logo makes me interested in the jerseys. Could we see the barber pole jerseys as the main set? Not a fan of the wordmark. 75%

In NHL news, the Tampa Bay Lightning are asking for feedback in preparation of creating a third jersey for the 2018-19 season. You can take it here. You will be entered to win one of 4 prizes, either a $50, $100 or $200 gift card to Tampa Bay Sports, an online retailer of Tampa Bay Lightning, Storm, Rays, Buccaneers, or collegiate merchandise. Or the grand prize which is a 2017-18 jersey.

VOTES: The HJC Open is coming to a close this week. Jake vs Brendan. YOU DECIDE! Plus the standard COTW, but don't sleep on that.

REMINDERS:

HJC Open Final vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
COTW July 14-20 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)

ON TO THE CONCEPTS!

Brooks F: Chicago Wolves (AHL) Concept

This logo is TEN times better than the existing Wolves logo. Having more black helps this concept as well. I want these made immediately. There is nothing to hate about this. The wordmark mirroring the striping is brilliant.

Rating: 100%

Brooks F: Hershey Bears (AHL) Concept

I don't know how practical a cream base jersey is full time with a cream colored helmet. Regardless, it's cool how you were able to exclude white completely with this concept. The yokes work well. I'm not buying the uneven striping though. The dark jersey is easily the best of the two, because of how close the two darker shades of brown are to each other.

Rating: 89%

Chris W: Marathon Argos (Fictional) Concept

This is a bit of a complex concept, to say the least, as Chris proposes a team in a fictional league (Great Lakes Hockey Association). For a team based in Marathon, Ontario (Thunder Bay district), having a Greek theme totally makes sense and what team name makes more sense than Argos (or Argonauts if you want to be technical)? As such, Chris gives us Greek inspired striping to match with a very creative logo. One that I think looks awesome but at the same time, one I question in regards to complexity and practicality. Alternate logo seems better suited for a hockey jersey, with and without the creepy eyes.

Rating: 92%

Lucas D: Detroit Red Wings Concept

Shoulder numbers...... ugh. I see how necessary they are though, as Detroit goes with a red and white barber pole look, a fauxback favorite, along with a massive chest stripe to go with the Stadium Series D logo. The classic D would be better in my opinion, just to fit the theme of the concept. Otherwise no issue, except for the template translation I mentioned last week.

Matt G: 2019 Winter Classic (Boston vs. Detroit) Concept

While good in concept, I cannot for the life of me read any of those nameplates clearly from a distance. The numbers on the Bruins jersey are too large, as is the logo on the front. Presentation note, the Spoked B is missing its white inside the logo on the top. White pants for Detroit?

Rating: 70%

Vaughn R: Quad City Mallards (ECHL) Military Night Concept

I definitely see improvement in your work here Vaughn. I like this idea a lot, but I think it could be better only by moving the American flag patch to the shoulder. Gloves could use some green. That nameplate is slightly large, as is the ECHL logo on the back.

Rating: 'MURICA (76%)

The WINNER of my Concept of the Week Nomination is

 BROOKS F

 CHICAGO WOLVES CONCEPT

Antoher week gone, another week closer to the Stabley Cap Tournament. The Facebook hockey comic series comes to life when four teams compete for the elusive Stabley Cap: The Nu Jerzee Devals, the Nu York Rager, The Washington Stabley Cap-itels and the Pittsberg Fils. Tickets are on sale here so come on over to Montclair, NJ to see me try and become a Stabley Cap Champion for Pittsberg, as the Eyelindurs were not available for me to play for. The event will also be streamed LIVE, more information on that later. Until then, I'll see you next week.

I gotta say I love Matt G's idea for the 2019 winter classic as far as the jersey matchup, definitely would've gone with red pants for Detroit, and the nameplates are basically unreadable especially in a stadium setting. I also think the numbers on Detroit's jersey are unreadable, but if they were placed on big white blocks like the numbers on Toronto's St. Pats throwback jersey, or even just a thicker white outline I think it would work well. The nameplates could be a different color than the jersey similar to the Flyers' nameplates or if the jerseys were meant to be worn in just the winter classic you could leave them off completely for a retro feel. It's only a matter of time before Detroit wears a version of that jersey as it looks too good, hopefully they don't reserve it for an alumni game lol.

Brooks' Wolves for COTY.

No, that wasn't a typo.

Love the new take on the Wolves, a great improvement. One detail I sort of miss is the green eyes on the Wolf. I have a Wolves jersey, and they actually put a reflective green material on the eyes, so that light shines off of them like real eyes. A nice, subtle touch, I think.

I wanted to know how to did Brooks managed to make a logo for the Wolves, because it looks real slick!

Hope to see a lot more of Chris W's Great Lakes Hockey Association.
Marathon's concept is an impressive start

If you are looking for further towns/cities to use you could look at teams and former teams of the SIJHL (Superior International Junior Hockey League).

I would like to second Lucas D's Detroit Red Wings concept. As a Wolves fan too many stripes on the sleeves and the logo is a nice start but its missing something. The green eyes are one but the forehead needs something and the chin is too rounded. If it were more jagged to replicate fur.
