Saturday: I can't think of a title

Sorry, I'm just plain out of titles for the time being. Give me time to recharge.

As a reminder, the HJC Open Final voting runs until 6PM Eastern time tomorrow. Get your votes in because this is the final vote!

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (by Alan)

This concept shows some promise but has some issues. While I like the colors and the overall idea, I think that there's much room for improvement. For example, the front of the jerseys are too busy. You have three logos plus the stars. Get rid of the stars and the Reebok logo. Also, I don't like how the stripes on the sleeves are curved. If they were a straight diagonal, it'd look better. Overall, I'll give it a 7/10.

Quebec Nordiques (by Austin)

I definitely like the logo, as I think the fleur-de-lis is a great design and integrating it into the bear head is a good design choice, much like how the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans successfully used the design as part of their rebranding. My problem with the design is a concern I've raised with Nordiques concepts before: red shouldn't be this prominent on their jerseys. Putting it on the logo is one thing, but it just doesn't seem right for a Quebecois team other than Montreal to be wearing red and blue. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

Dallas Stars (by Brian)

Brian's concept changes the Stars from their current color scheme to a more Texas-centric one and I have to say I'm in the middle about this one. While I do think that the Stars were wrong to change from gold to silver, I'm not so sure this is a change they need. For one, ditching the green is a bad idea. Secondly, there are already six teams in the league that use red and blue as a color scheme, and in North American sports overall, it is an overused color scheme. Green and black is not that common and should be maintained. Since the concept isn't anything more than a color swap, I have no other comments. Overall, I'll give it a 7.5/10.

Dallas Stars (by Jake88)

Sorry Jake, but I just can't get behind your Stars concept either. The Stars eventually creating a black third seems inevitable at this point but this is not the direction they need to go in. You've combined two of my least favorite Reebok Edge features: the vertical piping and the Bettman Apron. Honestly though, if you used Dallas' primary logo, it'd go a long way towards improving it. Overall, I'll give it a 7/10.

Penn State Nittany Lions (by Jake88)

First of all, this gets points for the creator remembering that the NCAA's rules require the home team to wear white at home. It seems like that's a small detail that some creators seem to miss when creating college concepts. This one's really good since the simplicity brings to mind Penn State's football uniforms, which are one of the best sets in college football because they're so simple. The third jersey is really unnecessary, though. It's superfluous. Overall, I'll give it an 8.5/10.

Detroit Octopi (by Joey)

Joey brings us another fantasy hockey concept this week. This one references a certain tradition in Detroit sports that I find distasteful for reasons other than the fact that I hate the Red Wings and I hate seafood in general. I just think the throwing of octopi onto the ice is a disgusting tradition for various reasons. Let's not throw an animal - regardless of whether it's dead or alive - onto the ice, m'kay? Anyway, as it pertains to the concept, I like the design because I've always thought the divided sleeve look a la the Wild's jersey was pretty cool. The color scheme is really good too since it flows together well. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

Colorado Avalanche (by Stephen)

I'm having a hard time with this one. It's not a bad concept but there are some things holding it back. I think the Avalanche could really benefit from decreasing the use of black in their color scheme, and the vertical sleeve stripes are one Nike design feature that I've never cared for. Also, while I applaud the return of the mountain striping, it seems pointless to use it on the hem without using it on the sleeves. Really, though, this is not a bad idea and is definitely worth tinkering with to improve it. Overall, I'll give it a 7/10.

Florida Panthers (by Steven)

Steven continues his de-Edge series with Florida this week. This is definitely a good design. The Panthers really need a simplified design since they've been an over-designed mess since the Edge switch. Ugh. They looked really good when the team first entered the league and things have only gotten worse since then. Steven's design takes the sun motif from the alternate logo and applies it to the stripes, which is a really good touch considering it is Florida. Overall, I'll give it an 8/10.

Carolina Hurricanes (by Tom)

What I wouldn't give to see this on the ice. Carolina really shot themselves in the foot by removing the warning flag design from their uniforms (among other problems...) and Tom has brought the design back with a vengeance. I really like that he's made it the primary design element on an otherwise simple design. This would work so well if it were real. Overall, I'll give it a 9/10 and a COTW nomination.

Florida Panthers (by Tyler)

And so we close with another Panthers design. This one also gets a thumbs up from me for simplifying the garbage the Panthers currently wear. So many designers in sports these days don't understand that simple is better. I'm looking at you, Oregon. This one's not perfect, though. I don't like the socks. There is only one team that can pull off the different color socks look, and they play in Boston. It looked better when the Capitals switched their socks to match their jerseys and it'd look better here too. Overall, I'll give it an 8.5/10.

I'll third Tom's Canes concept.

I think Steven's idea for the Panthers fits a 3rd jersey extremely well. As a whole set though it seems a bit ECHL-ish.

While I do think you could say the red, white, and blue is an overused color scheme. But overall it is just a great color scheme, and us Americans love to see that red, white, and blue

A bit harsh on the judgements this week, eh? I like the Soo Greyhounds concept and the second Dallas concept. Getting rid of the Reebok logo on the Soo concept can't happen as all OHL jerseys have it there. The Stars concept, although it could lose the Bettman Apron, looks terrific, and I think that logo works with that concept well.
