Wednesday: It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Hey there HJCrs.

As the title states... It is the most wonderful time of the year. It's new goalie pad season. CCM decided to show off their new line of goalie gear, but wait... I believe we're seeing Reebok enter it's final years as a hockey company. We've heard the rumors for while now and saw CCM take over branding on AHL jerseys. But now it appears CCM is taking over Reebok's goalie line. I checked my snapchat only to see CCM sharing photos of Roberto Luongo, Marc-Andre Fleury, and Cam Talbot all showing off CCM's new pads.

The thing that CCM doesn't explain is that "Premier" has been the name of Reebok's top series of goalie gear for years. I used to wear Premiers myself until I switched over to Reebok Larcenys. But hey, maybe CCM is just stealing the name. Well let's not forget CCM is a subsidiary of Reebok, which is owned by Adidas. Rumor has it that Adidas plans on pulling Reebok out of hockey completely and having CCM take its place. Plus, the three goalies CCM used to unveil the pads have all been Reebok goalies for the past several years.

I'm a little sad to see Reebok leave hockey, I've been wearing Reebok pads for years. But I have been interested in CCM's gear for the past few years so this would be the perfect excuse to get some. You know what will make me UN-sad? You voting. There's three votes going on so go ahead and do them and I won't cry. I'm an ugly crier so let's avoid that.

HJC Quarter Final Vote (due Tuesday by 11:59pm Eastern)
2nd Quarter Vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW July 5-11 Vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Ok, let's get to the concepts shall we?

Columbus Blue Jackets Alternate Jersey Concept - Zach E.
Zach designs a jersey for Ohio's NHL team with Ohio Pride in mind. I feel like I've seen this attempted before, but I think the flag use was more subtle. Absolutely try using the flag, but absolutely be more subtle with it. For some reason I just see a big bib. I think the design element most likely to work here is the arm striping. It's interesting. Definitely ditch the flag bib though. The numbers are really long for some reason too. I'd like to see the rest of the equipment that goes with this.

New York Riveters Away Uniform Concept - Daryl D.
The NWHL is coming and they're looking for uniforms. Daryl suggests a dual blue set for the New York team. The logo is humongous so that needs to be scaled down a bit. The striping seems very busy and the colors are fighting for attention. I think the striping needs to be simplified, or at least swap red out for one of the other colors. I think the numbers would look good with a white stroke added on before the silver stroke, just like the logo. This design could work but right now the way the colors are used isn't working for me.

Columbus Blue Jackets Concept - Ryan C.
The Columbus Saad Stealers recently tweaked their jerseys but Ryan wants to see a more extreme change. The cannon logo takes over main crest duties while the star/flag logo seems to have been killed off. Bad move, I'd at least replace the hat logo with the star/flag. Personally, I think the current primary logo would look a lot better on the front of these jerseys. I'm not wild about the jersey's striping. It seems like it'd fit better in a minor league. Definitely make the thin stripes on the sleeve/sock thicker and it would look better with the underarm swoops. Lastly, I don't think the red pants work as well here as they do with their current set. There's a lot more red in these jerseys, so it comes off as way too much red for a team with "Blue" in their name.

Rating: 7.5/10

NHL Expansion Project - Quebec Nordiques - Christian L.
Ah, Christian's take on the Nordiques. How many times have we seen this logo come through here and on how many different jerseys? I don't mind seeing it again, it's a very nice logo. The jerseys here are really nice as well. I love how the striping pattern is the same, but not color swapped between the jerseys so it takes on a new look.  I have a couple issues with the presentation though. First, I'd like to see the rest of the equipment. You've done so much work making a logoset and jerseys, but the uniform doesn't feel complete. I want to see which logos if any get used on the pants or helmet, I want to see the socks. Also, why aren't you showing off your secondary logo? I think you could very easily showcase both logos and full uniforms all on one image instead of two images that don't show everything.

Despite those issues I have, the logo is well done and the jerseys look great

Reebok leaving hockey... What does this mean for RBK Edge?

Ryan said...

Not much. There will just be CCM logos on the jerseys in place of Reebok. Same company anyways.

Hopefully we get some cuts from the switch soon.

Soon we will have the CCM Edge!! Honestly I can't wait, reebok makes me think of shoes, CCMs all hockey to me!

Fellow goalie here!

Thank you, good bye and don't come back Reebok! The trappers felt all wrong, the blockers broke pretty fast and several years of using their pads almost broke my knees. Also I tried a Reebok goalie mask once, hated it.

Another thing that I highly dislike Reebok for is the pricing. They seriously have the guts to charge the same amount of money for their Afghanistan/Pakistan made gear that Bauer and Vaughn charge for their custom Canadian gear.

Now I'm done ranting. COTW nom for Christian L's Quebec jersey, that jersey's a beaut!

For anyone that thinks there are going to be big changes because it's CCM now instead of Reebok, I beleive you will be disappointed.

Reebok is the same company as CCM, they have the same owner anyway (Addidas). It has been Addidas' plan for about 2-3 years to refocus the Reebok brand out of specific sports and position it as a "fitness" brand. Other sports were transitioned a year or so back and I suppose hockey is one of the last sports on Addidas' checklist. That also means they likely aren't very concerned about the relationship hockey and the Reebok name have. Someone may have called an employee in North America and said, "we need to get out of hockey!". The North American rep may have responded with something like, "well we own a company in Canada called CCM and they know hockey." And the other guy could have said, "okay tell CCM they have to make all of the equipment Reebok made." Then the North American rep repackages those words and presents it as "CCM is the new #1 in hockey!"

@ L Pajoslahti - Oh my god, Reebok trappers are the best! I love mine, the only other glove that feels remotely ok to me is the new Brian's G Netik. A blocker's a blocker to me though, and the pads have always felt good to me. I miss the Premier series but my Larcenys have been good to me.

My Reebok helmet is getting old and needs replacing and I was thinking of switching to SportMask and getting a Tim Thomas-like mask because they're awesome.

What are you rockin' now?

@ DBro - I've never been a one brand kind of guy, but right now everything Bauer exept the trapper. It's a Vaughn V3 I've had for ~7 years and it's still going strong. I've had a few different masks, nothing comes close to the quality of Wall mask from my native Finland.
