Monday: C0NC3PT5

Welcome to another Monday post! I stole the idea of the post title from a Journey album and if you know when one(s) I'll think you're cool!

Minor League Roundup! (If you'd like to design a logo for the Monday Minor League Roundup (something with a lasso) send them to me winnipegjets96@gmail.com and I'll give you a shout out!)

In Tulsa, OK the AA Oilers are holding their Breast Cancer Awareness night, with a very Houston Oilers looking jersey.

Seeing the oil derricks on the arms is a really nice touch a minor league Oilers team could do (like the OKC Barons or these guys) and it'd look fantastic, the one on the hem stripe may be a it too much but I like it for a one off jersey. The colours all go well together, though I think that the effort put into making pink work on the logo (which it really does imo), the jersey should have some navy and grey on it! There jerseys are up for auction so if you wanna support a good cause put a bet in here.

In Alaska, the Aces had a Girl Scouts night and as a result went tie-dye for some reason (We don't have girls scouts in Canada, just Girl Guides, and they wear double blue).

I'd think these were more a Grateful Dead thing, but a tie-dye jersey looks okay. I'd throw it in the same category as the screen printed Star Wars jerseys, but for a good cause. There really isn't much to review since the jerseys would look the same for all 29 ECHL teams just with a different logo but I'd never seen it before so...neat...

Rating: 6/10

In Cleveland, the Monsters honoured their AL Pennant Indians with some pretty accurate and impressive crossover jerseys.

The attention to detail not his jersey is incredible! The grey pants that connect into the top of the socks along with the red arms with shading on them to make them appear like an undershirt, it really comes together well. This is how to pull off a baseball crossover, don't just slap  logo on a jersey, either make a hockey jersey out of the baseball team's logo set, or do this, make a hockey jersey  a baseball uniform. Sunday writer Steven has ordered one (congrats on the engagement by the way!) and hopefully he'll share pictures once it arrives!

Rating: 9/10

In Winnipeg, the Moose are holding their 2nd annual Polar Bear night. Remember how good the jerseys were last year, along with the logo made for the game? This year we get what I would assume is their shoulder patch if the Polar Bears ever actually existed

Photo from Manitoba Moose Official Twitter (@ManitobaMoose)
So this is how the Jets/Moose jerseys would look in only double blue? Not bad! I have to say I don't quite like these as much as last year, but it's something new! The logo is once again excellent, and we're getting this really fleshed out look for the one night even that might eventually mould itself into a new identity for a WHL or AHL team in the future.

Rating: 8.25/10

Got a minor league specialty jersey you want reviewed? Post a link to it in the comments and it'll very likely appear in a future Monday post!

This is the biggest vote of the year...the 2016 COTY Finals! Two of HJC's biggest heavyweights Avi S. and Matt M. are duking it out with two of the best concepts of 2016, both of which we hope to someday see on the ice! It's Vegas v. Tucson, a desert duel if you prefer! You can vote on the side of the page and get your say in!

That doesn't mean COTW has stopped! While you're voting for COTY, you can also vote for the 4th COTW vote of 2017!

Finally, let's look at some of the St. Louis Eagles Contest entries that have come in since the contest began (again I'll cut Steven some slack because engagements are a big deal)

Brooks F.

Ryan C.

Great stuff, entries are due Friday!

2016 COTY Final vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)
COTW Jan 20-26 vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)
ST. Louis Eagles entries (due Friday @ noon Eastern)

On with today's concepts!

Colorado Eagles ECHL Concepts (By: Jay S.)

+ We've seen this idea for the home and road a few times and every time it seems to work
+ The alternate keeps their current colour scheme, and I like it that way. The current Eagles look is just that, a solid alternate look and no use in throwing the baby out with the bathwater
+ Love the addition of the Avs numbers, ties the two franchises together
+ Good execution

- Helmet logos?
- Shoulder patches are very pixelated
- The shades of gold are different on the black jersey between the logo and the actual jersey which I think is to match the shoulder patch, but changing at least the back to match it would help tie it all together

Rating: 8.5/10

Vancouver Canucks Concepts (By: Lucas D.)

+ I'm a fan of the Canucks using a double blue & silver if they want to keep their orca logo
+ The V, especially on the white jersey, looks great
+ Striping looks good
+ Good execution, the NHL100 patch adds to these concepts

- The blues on the home jersey are too close to each other, this does help the silver and white stand out, but the V doesn't really work
- Sublimating the V and putting a hem stripe on the jersey works well
- Shoulder patch?

Fort Wayne Komets Concepts (By: Jay S.)

+ The gradient looks great in the striping, I really like how with the shift of the small stripe above it and the collar, it manages to work on both jerseys
+ Also dig the numbers, not sure if it's a custom font but I like it
+ Orange alternate puts a classic logo that is a little out there with a simple jersey
+ Good execution

- Same issue as the last concept with regards to the helmet logos
- Would be nice to get some silver on the socks

Rating: 8.75/10 COTW Nom from me!

Toronto Maple Leafs Concept (By: Danny R.)

+ We don't see a lot of concepts based around the one year green Maple Leafs concepts, especially since they really only wore white sweaters with slightly off coloured socks before switching to blue and white....and I dig seeing this
+ The scriptless logo with a black outline looks solid
+ Striping mixes the 1927-24 hem with a doubled up 67-70 arm and it look good
+ Numbers are look solid
+ Good execution

- The leather looking gear doesn't really work for me, similarly to the 2002 St. Pats throwback. I would have gone for the 1919-26 canvas coloured pants
- I would have ditched the yoke and added more white in the numbers and logo
- The black stripes on the pants are killing me!

Rating: 7.75/10

Team Czech Republic IIHF Concepts (By: Mike F.)

+ Striping, while a little Blackhawks-ish, it works across the board
+ Solid logo choices, especially in the sizing on the Czechoslovakia throwbacks
+ Overall I think this does a good job of doing what the EA international jerseys are notorious for doing, slightly generic classic jerseys that use the flag and avoid IIHF references at all costs, but Mike does well making them look wearable (unlike what EA usually uses)
+ Good execution

- Not a huge fan of the red gear with the white jersey
- Try inverting the blue and white on the red jersey to get a better match
- The home and road jerseys do look good but they're pretty generic still and a team like the Czechs would look better

Rating: 8/10

Nashville Predators Concepts (By: Zach H.)

+ Guitar string stripes on the arms and numbers might be much for some but I like it
+ Aside from one major pick I have with the yokes, the rest of the jersey looks excellent
+ Decent execution

-The yokes should either match the colour of the hem and arm cuffs, otherwise it throws the jersey off, unless you scrapped the cuffs all together, but that would throw off the good balancing on the white jersey
- Pants need some white
- Sizing issue with the tv numbers, numbers on the back and the shoulder patches
- Collar on the white jersey would look better in yellow

Rating: 6.75/10

Greenville Swamp Rabbit ECHL Concepts (By: Jay S.)

+ Loving the Rangers striping in there Swamp Rabbits colour scheme
+ Solid logo choices
+ Vast improvement over what they wear right now without being a direct Rangers rip like the current alternate is
+ Good execution

- Helmet logos
- Shoulder patches are heavily pixelated
- Even through you'd be editing the Rangers logo, making the red triangle orange would tie the jersey together better

Rating: 7.5/10

Those Monsters jerseys were beautiful to watch in person and it was a great game too.

Jay S loving your ECHL series so far. When you get to the Mavericks I would love to see what they would look like with white, powder blue and orange jerseys based off the striping patterns from the Kansas City Blades and Scouts jerseys. Just please don't use the stupid M logo they started using

Thx Geoff! I'll consider it
