Monday: More Minor League Goodies
Welcome to another Monday post!
I don't think this will be a permanent year round part of my posts but for the remainder of the hockey season, I think you readers will be getting this almost every post for a while. I like reviewing minor league specialty jerseys and as they come out I will continue to review them. I'm not going to be the only writer who does, I won't ever claim to have the monopoly on reviewing minor league specialty jerseys but if I find them, I review them! I won't review EVERY jersey to come out, especially the over the top screen printed ones that everyone talks about, it's almost always the same concepts too. Screenprinted jersey with a recoloured primary logo slapped on the front, honestly, I'm bored of them for the post part...It's like a Family Guy cut away gag, just fluffy pop culture references.
Starting in Kansas, where the ECHL's Wichita Thunder are honouring there parent club by wearing a version of the jersey we all hope the Senators promote next season.
The Thunder have a good look going for them, with the updated logo and decent Blue Jackets 3rd inspired jerseys that I hope they stick with for a while, but I have a liking to these as an alternate. The Times New Roman W is a pretty weak primary logo, but in context it works and I like the fact they went through with this idea. Overall the jersey is pretty standard but I really like the recoloured Thunder logo on the shoulder. If you're looking for concept inspiration that's where to find it, make a concept with that logo because I love it!
Rating: 7/10
In Tucson the Roadrunners are hosted a Wildcats Weekend on Friday & Saturday where they took inspiration from the Arizona Wildcats look as well as the state flag.
Now the obvious fact is that the Tucson Roadrunners and Wildcats colour scheme clash, but I understand why they didn't recolour the logos. The striping is pretty simple, just a two stripe set and it looks okay, not a huge fan of the yoke outline, but the main feature on this jersey is the sun rays from the Arizona flag. I really like this detail, it could be done full time as a sublimated pattern on their current jerseys and it'd look incredible!
Rating: 6.75/10
Like the NHL, the AHL will be wearing 4 All Star Game jerseys, this year in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.
The Atlantic jersey is clearly based on the host Phantoms, while the Central seems to be either the Rampage or perhaps the Chicago Wolves logo. The North one would think is based on the old Springfield Falcons (weird saying that), the Rochester Americans or Hartford Wolfpack, and the Pacific for some reason takes inspiration from the Milwaukee Admirals, perhaps Manitoba Moose even. All 4 jerseys contrast each other well, the only two I see really clashing in any way is the arms of the Atlantic and Central arms and shoulder but EVEN THEN, it's highly unlikely orange and grey get mixed up. While the NHL jerseys had a little more colour continuity between them, I appreciate the clashing factor with these.
Rating: All get about a 7.5/10
Finally in the ECHL, the Indy Fuel honoured their parent club by slapping their logo and the IceHogs logo on a Blackhawks/IceHogs jersey
Where to begin...no..wait, I actually like these! Yes like the Rockford Icehogs, the team looks better wearing copies than their actual jerseys. that doesn't mean I think they should adopt this look full-time, but like the South Carolina Stingrays, it makes a good alternate. I do think, in the unlikely event they use these full times, there'd need to be some yellow (Great idea for a concept btw), especially in the numbers.

COTW has reset for the week, get a jump on the 2017 COTW work and vote!
The 4th Quarter is on this week, Avi has at least 2 concepts in this, as well as the 3rd Quarter vote. The other 3 Quarter winner concepts are Matt's Roadrunners' concept from May, Avi's Vegas concept from September and Josiah's Hamilton Bulldogs concept from February.
Let'a take a look at the Toronto 3rd jersey contest entries that have come in so far!
Lucas D.
Jamie R.
Brooks F.
Jake M.
Great stuff, entries are due Friday, refer to the Weekend Update for a full contest schedule up to mid February!
Onto today's concepts!
+ If the charges change their jerseys next season, this is exactly what most fans want. The new Los Tiberones logos are almost certainly going to be used primarily in the coming seasons, and the 25th anniversary jersey showed with a darker shade of teal, the Sharks can wear their inaugural jerseys for a long time
+ Of the Los Tiberones logos, Lucas picks the best ones for these jerseys
+ Great execution
- Not a fan of the number, looking too thin for my taste
- the white jersey needs a teal stripe above the top black stripe
- While it is a ver practical and good looking concept, a a concept it's not particularly unique or interesting, not that this really brings it down, it more keeps it from being rated higher.
Rating: 8.5/10
St. Louis Blues Concepts (By: Kristo L.)
+ The striping is very similar to what they wear now minus the lack of dark blue and cuffs, unlike most of the sets, Kristo keeps things very similar to what they have
+ Good colour balancing for the most part across the jerseys
+ The semi yokes work well on this concept
+ Good execution
- Primary logo is much too large
- Since the pants of dark blue it would be nice to see it as a filler in between the yellow & blue/white stripe
- Pants, should and helmet need gear
Rating: 7.5/10
San Jose Sharks Concept (By: Avi S.)
+ Like Lucas's concept, taking inspiration from the inaugural jerseys is a good move and coupling it with the Tiberones logo
+ The striping I think looks like the 2015 Stadium Series jerseys, as well as the So-Cal shoulder patch without the orange, which I think those two go together very well
+ Really dig the custom font for the numbers
+ Great execution
- Not so much a negative but would be interesting to see if orange could work on this concept
Rating: 9.5/10 COTW Nom from me!
New York Americans Concepts (By: Lucas D.)
+ Really like the logos and script Lucas has created here, it gets the patriotism across but isn't lost in trying to fit as many Stars & Stripe references as possible
+ The striping is very similar to what I think the Atlanta away template could have been, and it looks really good, on top of that it works with the logo
+ Good colour balancing across the board
+ Great execution
- The hem could maybe use some red on both, even a minor amount
- The numbers are hard to read on the arms
Rating: 8.75/10
Houston Americans Concepts (By: Danny R.)
+ Another set of fantastic custom logos, this time going for more of a Rochester look than a Brooklyn one, though the jerseys are clearly Rochesters inspired
+ That being said the jerseys are really nice, simple but not too simple
+ The alternate is gorgeous, Rochester inspired but it works for the Houston look
+ Good execution
- Home and road could use a hem stripe, I don't think they need them, but it would look better
- The striping and numbers on the alternate should have some red, like a very thin outline
Rating: 8.75/10
Ottawa Senators Concept (By: Lucas D.)
+ Here's two ideas I wouldn't have put together; a chest sash and laurel pattern...and you now what..it really works, great idea!
+ At this point, I want Ottawa to adopt vintage white full time, and it too works with the laurel pattern
+ Minnesota alternate striping works too
+ Good execution, glad Lucas took the opportunity to tryout a new template to confuse people as to who made it in The Season, I wouldn't have guessed him!
- Captain's C would look better as black if it's in the chest stripe
- Shoulder patches would make this jersey much better
Rating: 9/10
