Monday: Mighty Mavs

@Welcome to the Monday post!

In the minors:

The Missouri Mavericks, who may be joining the AHL in coming seasons, decided to hold a 90s night, honouring the fictional but still just as famous Mighty Ducks of Wherever because I've never seen the movies (blasphemy, I know). Thanks to Geoff in the comments for telling me about the Mavs jerseys (They were one of the only ECHL teams I didn't follow on Twitter), I couldn't find any good pictures of their Kansas City Monarchs throwback jersey on ice but here's a link if you wanna see it.

I don't usually like templated specialty jerseys, but the Mavs avoid falling to the pitfalls of that by using their own logo, numbers and shoulder patches. It might sounds weird to say this but I really like  the look of the grey horseshoes on the Mighty Ducks colour scheme. the rest of the jersey holds up well, to the point here they could wear this as an alternate if they didn't already have an orange one that fit their set better. I will say they should adopt this striping template, as it works a lot better than then Nashville pre 2011 cookie cutter template

Rating: 7.5/10

On top of that the Mavs decided, like the Wichita Thunder and Indy Fuel did by honouring their parent club, this time the New York Islanders.

Like the previous teams the striping doesn't really bring anything new, but unlike Indy, we get a new logo. I really like the MO logo! It very much so reminds me of their Scouts jersey they wore in the CeHL, which I think started this trend many years before it was popular. Of course these were only worn in warm up (based on what I could see) but like the Wichita Thunder jersey, we get a logo the team could use full time. I'm sure Phil will have an opinion on this, as these are one of the Islanders' farm teams, but what do you think? Does this work?

Rating: 8/10

In the FHL, the Port Huron Prowlers had an ALS Awareness night, in which they wore pretty sharp Blues inspired jerseys.

The recoloured logo looks fantastic, I mean I like the Prowlers current jerseys but these are also really nice and the logos are no exception. The cuffs are different from the actual Blues alternate and imo look better, at least now rather than when the Blues alternate was it its prime. I'm getting an AHL Rivs vibe from it, which I mean they had a good identity so someone should use it. There's a special jersey auction for these so check out their website for more information on that, it's for a good cause.

Finally, in the LMJHQ, my Halifax Mooseheads wore their yearly Military Appreciation night jerseys. I happened to be at this game against the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, but was in the upper bowl so could not get any decent photos. The Mooseheads also lost the game 7-4 against the 2nd worst team at the time in the Q, meant I had to go else where for photos.

The Drakkar wore their 20th anniversary jersey, which are identical to their usual black alternate with an arguably better logo, using the 2007-09 ASG template. The Mooseheads opted for the 2016 Chicago SS jerseys, with the Mooseheads usual primary instead of the tomahawk C and a green top stripe on the arm. The Canadian Armed Forces logo looks good as a primary, though I do wonder if this could work as a full time jersey for the Moosehads (idea for a concept!). This template works well when the collar is fully black, and it's nice to see teams attempt to use these contemporary templates and see it work.

Nothing else really came across my radar this week, but if your local minor league team (AHL, ECHL, CHL) has worn a specialty jersey, post it in the comments and I'll try to review it.

The 3rd COTW vote of 2017 is on! This week we have 5 concepts, none of which are alike!

More importantly we have the 2016 COTY Semi Finals, Josiah takes on Avi, and Avi then takes of Matt Mc. The four best concepts of 2016 are together, and only will move on to the finals. It's hard to say which is best, as I think we'd love to see all 4 of these on the ice with their respective teams. Vote on the side of the page

The Toronto Maple Leafs Alternate Contest is in its voting phase, click on the blue and white tab above to vote for your top 3 concepts!

Voting for all 3 of these votes ends Friday at Noon EST

COTY Semi-Final votes (end Friday @ noon Eastern)
COTW Jan 13-19 vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)
TOR 3rd Jersey Top 3 vote (ends Friday @ noon Eastern)

On with today's concept!

2016 Heritage Classic Concept (By: Jay S.)

+ Right away I really like the bending of old and new. The fauxback is strong with this one, but, and especially with the Winnipeg concept, the modern aspects of the team's design shine through
+ Great colour scheme across the board
+ Some may not like this, but the cream on the Oilers colour scheme works well, and the lightness of it works better than what Bakersfield attempted
+ Logo choices are solid, both taking parts of their primary
+ Good execution

- Heritage classic logo is very pixelated
- The collars are quite bland considering how exciting the rest of the jersey is, would have led to see inverted laces, especially on the Winnipeg jersey

Rating: 8.75/10

Washington Capitals Concept (By: DT Concepts)

+ Happy to see the 2015 WC logo being used! Looks great in both official colours!
+ Jersey striping is very similar to the DC flag, but it also fits into the colour scheme, good work on that!
+ I like the inclusion of the gold on the collar insert
+ Great execution

- The monochrome NOB doesn't really work for me, it's not bad but I'd prefer it look more like their current numbers
- The blue upper arm reminds me of the Colorado 2016 SS jerseys, I'm sure there is a way to get around that, it's not a massive negative but it does somewhat stick out

Rating: 9/10

Carolina Hurricanes Concepts (By: Jay S.)

+ Right away, better colour balancing than any other jersey the 'Canes have had
+ Nice to see a lot of the new and old kept, the old numbers look solid, but the more Charlotte Checkers striping works too
+ Alternate is a nice improvement over the now outdated current alternate
+ Good logo choices
+ Good execution

- Shoulder patches are too small
- White jersey would look better with a similar yoke to what their current away jersey has
- Would have opted for red numbers on the white jersey too

Rating: 8.25/10

Carolina Hurricanes Concepts (By: Zach H.)

+ Nice custom logo, it would at least work as an nice shoulder patch or other logo on the gear
+  The hurricane striping comes back and having it surrounded by black and white really helps it
+ The hooked looking yoke looks awesome
+ Glad to see Zach kept the new numbers

- NOB is much too small, as is the Assistant's A
- The numbers on the back of the black jersey would look better in black
- Collar would look better if it wasn't solid red on both jerseys

Rating: 7.25/10

Detroit Red Wings Concept (By: DT Concepts)

+ While the gear kinda ruined it, the Detroit SS jerseys were pretty solid, and with some changes, like the ones DT has made, it'll work
+ No more white gloves, more classic pants that still have lots of white
+ Nicer striping pattern and an actual pattern on the arms and socks
+ Good execution

- No numbers anywhere on the jersey (helmet, sleeves etc), the ones on the actual jersey were worth keeping around
- Should have the current primary on the shoulders
- Surprisingly, I also would have kept the script on the collar

Rating: 8.75/10

Florida Panthers Concepts (By: Zach H.)

+ Remember the life preserver logo? This is a vast improvement over what we once had
+ If you're going to move away from the current Panthers look, I really like the idea of using the 3 main Florida colours, and keeping the jerseys bright
+ I love the look of the sun rays on the edge of the yokes
+ Good execution

- NOB is too thin
- Red jersey could use some white on the socks
- While a shoulder patch might be too much, a logo on the stripes would work (sun & palm tree)

Rating: 8.5/10

Toronto Maple Leafs Concept (By: Tyler M.S.)

+ It seems more and more unlikely that we'll get that Arenas alternate (this season), which is a shame because it does go with the current look
+ The tags on the side of the jersey is pretty solid, nice to see another team do this not called Detroit
+ Numbers look nice
+ Good execution

- The shoulders desperately need a patch
- The striping is simple...a little too simple, yes the tags on the side do a good job keeping the bottom form being bland but without the patch or more colour in the arms, it falls flat. The T is just such a plain logo it's hard to not focus on the blank parts

Rating: 7.5/10

Montréal Canadiens Concept (By: Ryan HJC)

+ I love the deep colours all over the jersey and gear
+ The stitched numbers look fantastic, and the placement on the arms is perfect
+ If Montréal ever gets another shot at an outdoor game, this is exactly what I'd want him to wear, literally not to change a thing, this would be a must own jersey in my collection.
+ Old school collars should be used on anything this old (in this case 1912)
+ Excellent execution

- Why aren't the Canadiens wearing these against a white version of the Arenas jerseys?

Rating: 10/10 COTW Nom from me!

Response about Mavericks coverage.

I also have not seen a good picture of the Monarchs jersey.

I agree they are in need of a major overhaul. However would be even better to rebrand themselves as the Blades. Their merchandise and branding keeps getting worse

Those jerseys are warmup jerseys they have been wearing all season. The local franchisee for Long John Silvers sponsors the jerseystats and they have done a few different designs. They also sell a t-shirt from a company called Charlie Hustle that does local themed designs. They even have a Blades design they sell. They have this one http://shop.missourimavericks.com/product/ST-5750/CH-KC-STICK-DARK-GRAY-TEE/ that is somewhat based on the jersey.

Jay S.'s Third jersey for the Hurricanes just looks like a hockey version of the NBA's Portland Trailblazers' uniforms.
