Friday: Tropical All Stars

Hello everyone, welcome back!

I have some news to share with you today...the 2018 NHL All Star Game logo has popped up online.

patchcollection.com
While it's hard to notice any subtle details since this embroidery, we can still get the overall gist of the logo. Quite frankly, I'm a big fan. I love the color palette especially; the warm colors pop really well in the blue background and give it a very beach-like or tropical feel. The banner on the bottom and the embellishments to the left and right of it look great, and balance out the colors from the (what looks to be a) sunset scene on top of the wordmark. From what I can see right here, I'm loving it. What do you guys think? Leave a comment below!

Overall: 8.5/10

Alan H. - Carolina Hurricanes

+I like the amount of color on this set, along with the flag pattern being used.
-I think you've gone a bit overboard with that pattern, though. It's quite busy like this. It would be a bit better if you gave it a treatment more like their new Adidas jerseys, but I would also like to see some more black on the set, or some other color to break up the massive amounts of red.
+I don't mind their current primary logo, but I don't mind the alt either, so I'm pretty indifferent on the logo choice.
-I would like to see the primary on the shoulders or the pants, though.
-I also don't mind their font, but I don't like it skewed.
Overall: 7.5/10

Alan H. - New York Rangers

+When it comes to being realistic, keeping the Rangers' jerseys faithful to their classic look.
-For a concept, it's nothing too special, though, especially if this series is meant to give a team something new.
+Changing the typeface for the script and numbers is probably the best way to change up the Rangers without changing them up too much. Gotta give you credit for doing something different.
-I'm not really feeling the one you chose, though. It looks like a better fit for a Stadium Series game or a game meant to have a futuristic jersey. It especially looks awkward on the numbers. The name is fine, though.
-It's also slightly off-putting to me that the arc of the name is different than the arc of the shoulder yoke. I'm sure not many would notice that, though.
Overall: 7.5/10

F.C. Macbeth - Kitchener Rangers
+I like the thought put into this concept. It's always a good look as a concept artist to show that you care more about quality than quantity.
+I think your logo idea works pretty well in general. It's a good start, and much better than a New York copy.
-My main issue with the logo is the "KIT". The I should at least be the same thickness as the K and T, but squishing it above the point should be avoided anyways. I would find something else to fill the void on top.
+As for the jerseys the striping looks really nice. The logo served as good inspiration for the striping.
-I would switch the red and blue on the white jersey to improve color balance through the set, though.
Overall: 8.5/10

Jets96 - Fort Wayne Komets
+Simple and effective striping, solid look.
+The orange pants are an interesting decision, but I think they'll work.
-While the diagonal script isn't bad, I see no reason to use it over their logo.
-You should be aware of how much I like a colorful jersey, so the primarily black jersey is a bit bland to me. Nothing fundamentally wrong with it, though.
Overall: 8/10

Jets96 - Trenton Titans
+Now this one, on the other hand, is quite colorful.
+The color balance is done well, too.
-The blue pants and equipment are, again, interesting. I give you credit for creativity, but I'm not as sold on these as I am on the orange pants from last concept. I'd have to see it being used or on a full body template.
-I see you stole the sublimated bridge design that Steve and myself used in the pairs comp this year.
+Just kidding. It's a nice, subtle detail, and I'm sure you didn't actually steal it.
Overall: 8.5/10

Kevin D. - Washington Capitals
+It's really a shame that the Weagle goes unused as the primary logo on a Caps jersey. It's such a great logo.
+Solid adaptation of their alternate/vintage uniforms. A good way to look into their history while giving them something new.
+Good color balance.
-While this is a good look, there's quite frankly nothing special about this look. It's pretty run-of-the-mill for a Caps concept.
Overall: 7.5/10 (8.5 in a vacuum)

Matt G. - New York Islanders
+I think this is a pretty good start to revamp the Islanders. Keeps faithful to their identity while bringing in new ideas.
+I like the idea of switching the logo to an isolated NY.
-I'm really not sure what the purpose of the circle is on the home and road jerseys. It looks incredibly awkward and out of place, I'd get rid of it.
+I like the idea of a blue and orange alt.
-There's really not much on that jersey that pops, though. More white would really be necessary, even if just for the logo and name/numbers.
+The Historic is a solid throwback design, and works well for its purpose. I'm glad you included all concepts on the same image, because for the purpose of this blog, having that as a separate concept really would be pointless.
Overall: 8/10
