Mallards to Cease Operations
On Tuesday the Quad City Mallards announced that they had informed the ECHL that the team would cease operations at the conclusion of this season (2017-18).
The Mallards started in the UHL (United Hockey League) and also served timed in the IHL and the CeHL (Central Hockey League). After the Central League merged with the ECHL the Mallards reached their highest level of professional hockey.
The team didn't always have the strongest looking brand. Their UHL jerseys and logo used purple, green, and yellow trim.
This jersey has been brought back in several different forms over the past three seasons by the current Mallards as a special alternate.
In 2009 before entering their first and only season in the IHL, the Mallards started on their journey towards where their brand is today with this re-design by Cargo Collective.
This design followed the team to the CeHL for the following season. For the 2011-12 season new ownership altered the team's colours and everything fell into place.
In subsequent years an awesome orange alternate jersey was designed by Athletic Knit's design team.
Even HJC was a small part of the Mallard's jersey history. The team partnered with HJC to hold a fan designed jersey competition where two winners were chosen!
From that competition yours truly (Ryan) even had a jersey design used in a game!
This brand will be missed. It's a very professional looking logo where the colours work perfectly. I personally hope that there is an opportunity in the future for this brand to reappear, whether it be in the Quad Cities or elsewhere.
This brings an end to one of the strongest looking minor league brands in hockey. As such I thought this would be a good time to provide a brief history of the looks of the team. The Mallards will cease operations following the end of the current season, Mallards owner Jordan Melville announced today.
