Week of June 25 - July 1, 2012
I'm back from Calgary. I failed my mission which was to get my Flames Heritage Classic sweater numbered while I was there. I went to 3 different malls and no one did it on site. I also tried to go to the Saddledome, but there was a convention on the Friday and the entire building was closed for that. Ah well, maybe some other time.
Also, I have about 50 emails waiting for responses. They all came in while I was away. I will try to respond to them tonight, but that may not happen and responses may be sent out tomorrow (Tuesday).
Today the HJC Open officially begins. To those of you who are in the first round, you may begin sending in your entry. You have until Wednesday @ 11:59pm EST to get your entry in. Committee Members, voting will begin on Thursday.
In case you missed it, last week the winner of the COTW was Scott M. with his Portland Winter Hawks concept. It was Scott's second win in a row! The results of the vote are below.
The new COTW nominees have been listed. You can see those concepts by clicking on that banner on the side of the page or you can go to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab. Here is the voting reminder for Committee Members.
Philadelphia Flyers concepts (by Kevin)
These fit the throwback theme that Kevin has with this series, but I think these sweaters lose a lot of their charm when you take away the coloured namebar. 7/10
Philadelphia Flyers concept (by Brandon C.)
We've seen concepts like this one many times before and that's because it would probably make a good 3rd jersey for the Flyers. This one is nicely executed, but my personal preference would be to see the coloured namebar. 7/10
Pittsburgh Penguins concepts (by Ian)
The alternate here is a nice change on the retro jersey. I could definitely see it being used as an alternate. The home and roads are okay, but they don't blow me away. Hey, I guess #11 is available now on the Pens if player "ABCD" wanted to use it. 7/10
Montreal Wanderers concept (by WinnipegJets96)
Jets96 has the Canadiens wearing fauxback Wanderers sweaters. Logically, this would never happen as you don't wear sweaters of former rivals. The concept itself it decently executed, but the logo does look a bit pixelated. 6/10
Quebec Nordiques concepts (by MasonII)
I would personally miss the fleur de lis along the hems, but I could also accept these as new Nordiques sweaters as well. And it looks like Mason has the Panthers moving there in the near future. 7/10
Los Angeles Kings concepts (by Nevill)
Here is what Nevill would do with the Kings' sweaters. I get having LA on the road jersey, I like the idea of bringing your city on the road with you and showing it across your chest. However, I would prefer it in a different way here. Perhaps have LOS ANGELES in the hem stripe like the used to do, but only on the road jersey. 7/10
AIK IF Elitserien concepts (by Kyle C.)
You can see AIK IF's actual sweaters HERE. Kyle has gotten rid of the black and gone with blue. I feel like I want something more here. I look at these and just see blue and yellow Hawks sweaters. They are nicely executed though. 6/10
Washington Capitals concepts (by Jesper)
Out of all three of these sweaters I like the white one the best! I'd make the red jersey blue and vice versa. Both are quite good as is though. I think that unused logo is gaining some steam with the current colours used and it would be great to see on a new 3rd jersey! 8/10
Arizona State concepts (by Justin) *Description on concept. COTW nom from me! 9/10
Minnesota Wild concepts (by NB14)
I don't really care for there as they are just re-coloured Jets sweaters. The wheat stripes work on the green jersey, but I don't think they are working well on the white one. Also, the collar insert on the white jersey is red, except behind the laces where it's green? 4/10
Minnesota Wild concepts (by Kevin)
In the same spirit that the Sharks were included in Kevin's series, so are the Wild. They would wear North Stars sweaters and I'm okay with that. I really feel like this team BELONGS to Minnesota. 8/10
Ottawa Senators concept (by Brandon C.)
First off, congrats to Brandon on completing this "Alternate Jersey Series". 95% of people who say they are going to start a series never end up finishing, so nice work! This one is excellent and would be a great 3rd jersey. It's even a good base for a new home and road sweater. In my opinion, it would have been better to use the current numbers and font instead of a standard block. 8/10

I want to second Justin's ASU jersey for COTW.... Holy Hell that's a beautiful jersey. I feel like sublimated designs are going to catch on soon.
Justin seconded for COTW
I don't think the Panthers are going anywhere since they just got good and I expect them to be good this year! :D
Mason II's Nords for COTW!
I don't think the Panthers should exist... same with teams like Phoenix, San Jose, Anaheim, and even Dallas... Some of those teams suffer by being in a non hockey market and it's kind of a slap in the face to places like Seattle, Wisconsin, or anywhere up in Canada that doesn't get a pro team where these teams would without a doubt would be a lot better off
@winnipegJets96: could never hit the ice. Historically and politically, you can look at the Canadiens as an answer to the Wanderers. When the Wands were created in 1903, the team proclaimed itself "for english players and citizens only". The french canadians players were not allowed to play for them. Fouded in 1909, the "Club Athlétique Canadien" was a french team only, to be known a couple of years later as the Club de Hockey Canadien (Canadien Hockey Club, aka the Canadiens). So nice idea of reviving Montreal past hockey history, but Habs, Wands and Maroons can't mix!
@ Stephane, I had no idea that the wanderers were an english only team, yeah, they would never mix
@WinnipegJets96: I just realized it was you for the Phoenix concept... You'll think I'm on your case, but I'm not!!! Coincidence! Have I ever told you about the time I made a Jets concept on a WHL Oilers template?
@ Stephane don't worry, I like getting consrtuctive critique, helps make my concepts better, especially when it comes from a knowledgable person. No, I never heard about the jets concept u made
