Wednesday: Toby Ruins Everything

Another Wednesday post here at HJC means another nor'easter, apparently. As Winter Storm Toby decides to work across the northeast United States, I can't help but laugh, because for those of you who have watched "The Office", you'll know that there's no more aptly named storm than this one.

THE SEASON: We are down to Orlando and Vancouver for the final matchup of the Season here at HJC. Special thanks to everybody who participated. Couldn't have done it without you. Now go choose a champion!

CLARKSON CUP PLAYOFFS: You know hockey season as a whole is winding down when you get to March, because you have collegiate conference tournaments, leading to the Frozen Four, you have NHL teams officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs (like Chicago last night for the first time in 10 years) and you have professional women's hockey championships. Both the NWHL and the CWHL will be decided this week, starting in Toronto on Sunday at 12 pm (Sportsnet), as Kunlun Red Star will take on the underdog Markham Thunder. The Thunder coming off an upset of Les Canadiennes in two games, while Kunlun needed triple overtime in the deciding third game of their series to beat the Calgary Inferno.

ISOBEL CUP PLAYOFFS: Meanwhile in the States, last Saturday the Buffalo Beauts have made their way into their third straight Isobel Cup final after defeating the Boston Pride in overtime. On the other side of the bracket, my Metropolitan Riveters won the game in the first 1:04 of the game, as Rebecca Russo scores the game winning goal, and the first of five goals for the Riveters while Katie Fitzgerald closed the door on the Connecticut Whale to preserve a 5-0 shutout and home ice advantage for the Isobel Cup Final at 3 pm Sunday on Twitter.

REMINDERS:

COTW March 9-15 vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)
The Season Final vote (ends Friday @ noon ET)

ON TO THE CONCEPTS!

Mitch S: Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) Concept

The other sign of March is baseball getting started, so today we start off the reviews with baseball. Now there are so many great things about the Blue Jays identity that I would have loved to see here, primarily the number font. And I get the idea of a grey road jersey but I'm not totally sold on this one. Side note: the 1992 World Series did not feature Josh Donaldson on the Jays roster, but he is playing this year, so I'd just dump the World Series patch until they reach the 2018 World Series (unlikely with the Yankees, Astros and Red Sox as heavy favorites in the AL). Striping pattern is cool and not that traditional, a plus in my book for this team. Collar is well done. PUT YOUR NAME OR ID ON THE IMAGE

Taylor R: Princeton Tigers (NCAA) Concept

We move on to the Ivy League, or rather the ECAC and find Princeton University with simple, yet modern striping patterns on each jersey, both of them well suited for a team called "Tigers". The best feature is how identical the two yokes are to a "T". black base, then and orange and white stripe separated by more black. I'd lose the nameplate on the white jersey though.

Rating: 95%

TC Moore: 2019 Winter Classic (BOS vs CHI) Concept

This is a nice matchup that goes totally old school with a pair of fauxbacks. Both of which are done very well, minus the socks. The striping on both of them is much too high. And I question the feasibility of the cream colored socks in relation to the opponent. I get the idea of color balance with the yoke through the equipment as we see with the cream colored gloves, but cream socks against white socks? I don't think that's a reasonable setup. Otherwise two solid concepts that I'd like to see next year.

Rating: 82%

The WINNER of my Concept of the Week nomination is:

 TAYLOR R

 PRINCETON TIGERS CONCEPT

Another Wednesday in the books. Here's hoping I can find somebody to cover my shift on Sunday so I can attend the Isobel Cup Final in Newark. I was hoping it would be in Prudential Center proper, but Justin Timberlake is holding a concert that night so changeover from the Devils game to a concert setup probably begins soon after the Devils game that Saturday is over. Maybe he can be a nice guy and sing the anthem. See you next week and GO RIVETERS!
