Friday: Alberta and Chill

Welcome folks, to another Friday post! TGIF!

Something big has appeared on social media. Apparently the New York Islanders could be using an all black alternate for the upcoming season. It's just currently rumors, and nothing has been confirmed, but it does definitely seem like a possibility.

What do you guys think? Could it be a possibility? Of course, there isn't anything sewn on outside of that main patch, very reminiscent of the Stadium Series logo from two years ago. Let's see what happens! The official release will be on the 21st of this month.

Vote! For this COTW thing! It's right on the side of the page! Convenient!

COTW Aug 23-29 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Brooks F. - Columbus Chill

Execution: Make sure you watch that stitching! It always stops after the stripes. The same can be said for the arms, especially with a pattern like this going on. Try to play with the template a little, maybe even get rid of all those stitches on the inside. I see this as more printed than anything, so try to copy that. (.5/1)
Striping: What this does better than the actual Chill jersey is that it's symmetrical. While I prefer the stripes on only one sleeve, having that text horizontal is so much better. It makes the jersey much more professional and clean. Not to mention that plain striping on the hem. The alternate though is a little different. The spikes shooting out like crazy makes it look just like that, crazy. It is way too crowded on the front. (1.25/2)
Effectiveness: The jersey works great for a smaller league like the ECHL. (1/1)
Creativity:
It's definitely an interesting take on an existing idea. I think that it does exist within the field of creative, especially that alternate. (1.25/2)
Other: The good is that what you did with the pants looks super cool. It's such a simple and clean design. The bad, the numbers, at least in my opinion, don't fit too well with the design. Especially on the arms, they just get lost. I don't really know how one would fix that. Try using different types of strokes, create something layered so it really pops maybe? (2.5/4)

Overall: A very cool idea, bringing back a defunct franchise. I think this is definitely a fun and creative jersey. (6.5/10)

Dylan T. - LGBT Rights

Execution: If this jersey is missing something, it would be numbers. Numbers are an essential part to any jersey and really can make or break a concept. Another issue, when you're making a concept like this, watch the yoke. You could have red on red, orange on orange, etc. but as it stands the jersey goes red on purple, orange on blue. It's a finer detail to just watch for. (.25/1)
Striping: This is incredibly cool. The rainbow design is actually really cool. It does remind me a lot of the Anaheim Ducks jerseys, which for me is a very good thing. Just like I said, watch how those patterns. (1.5/2)
Effectiveness: I could see this being sold as a sort of promotional item. (1/1)
Creativity:
The rainbow design is incredibly clever. I would say this is definitely one jersey that does something incredibly original. (2/2)
Other: I hate to say this, but the Lambda does detract from the jersey. It just seems so flat, especially on such a modern and sleek jersey like this. Look at something like the logo for the Half Life franchise. It does feature a stylized version of the logo. Maybe even having the LGBT written across the chest, you could even have a logo underneath. Something to really make this jersey pop more than the rainbows. (1.5/4)

Overall: I don't want to talk about the politics, but regardless it cannot be denied that this jersey does something incredibly creative and cool. Just try to add some numbers or patches, and really find a way to make that logo more interesting. Well done, Dylan. (6.25/10)

Taylor R. - Calgary 3rd

Execution: Killed it as always. (1/1)
Striping: Very simplistic. What is really cool though is how the pattern carries onto the leg, a detail I love to see in jerseys. Good stuff there! The little touch of yellow keeps the jersey balanced, and makes a strong impression. (1.5/2)
Effectiveness: I wish Calgary would just convert their current alternate to a primary and bring in black for an alternate. So yes. (1/1)
Creativity:
Not incredibly. But it does definitely separate itself from other Flames concepts through that striping and the snot horse. It's a good overall idea, and therefore it gets points. (1.5/2)
Other: Speaking of snot horse, I don't know if this logo is the best choice. I know that this is the only Calgary has featured on black, but just imagine how cool the C would look on a black jersey like this! The horse just looks like it takes up too much of the jersey. The numbers and name look sharp though, and really help balance the jersey. (2.5/4)

Overall: Great stuff here. This is the kind of direction I wish a team like Calgary would take, something much simpler. (7.5/10)

Taylor R. - Edmonton 3rd

Execution: Two in one day! You're heating up! (1/1)
Striping: Gorgeous. I love designs like this, and it's really stuff like this that help make the logo pop. That hem stripe is fantastic, and helps show how modern this concept really is. The yoke isn't too aggressive and keeps the jersey crowded in the best possible way. (2/2)
Effectiveness: I feel like you should just make this in white and say it's the primary set. (1/1)
Creativity:
I don't think I've ever seen an Oilers jersey like this. I have seen jerseys that do use chest stripes, but none that do it like this. It's mostly that tail stripe that separates this jersey. (1.5/2)
Other: I don't know if you could tell, but concepts like these are my favorite. The ones with layers upon layers of ideas that all help show off that main logo that is the center of an identity. The numbers pop just right, the jersey isn't too crowded, there is a lot of this great negative space. It's a great jersey. (4/4)

Overall: This is just such a great jersey, I love it. I think I can say that this is a (9/10) and a COTW Nom from me
