Saturday: Today's Post Is Free!!!
That's right, today's post won't cost you a single dime. So put that wallet away, sit back, and enjoy a nice and easy Saturday HJC post.
The winner of the COTW vote for September 13-19 was Adam G's Boston College concept!
Congrats to Adam. It's impressive to see that his two concepts received 29 of the 33 votes cast.
The new set of COTW nominees for September 20-26 have been listed in the poll on the side of the page. Considering it was a slow week, it's great to see 8 concepts properly nominated and seconded. If you have any type of Google account go sign in and place your vote. Voting ends Friday at 11:59pm Eastern. You can see the concepts by clicking the link in the poll or by going to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab.
I meant to launch the new ReDesign in the middle of this past week, but late Friday night still works. Lets ReDesign the WHA's New York Golden Blades! This team didn't last long and moved to New Jersey/Philly early into the 73-74 season. The logo is so 70's and so WHA, and there lies your challenge. Can you create a modern looking logo? Can you use the existing logo and make it appear modern on a new jersey? And do all that while not making them look like a 1970's LA Kings rip-off. Good luck to everyone and I'm really excited to see the entries! They're due on Friday by 11:59pm Eastern.
This week I've asked the HJC Writers to come up with their favourite Stanley Cup Final, just based on looks alone. I'll bat lead off and go with the 1988 Stanley Cup Final, but only with the games played in Edmonton.
This series featured lots of vibrant colours (blue, orange, yellow) but the teams were clearly distinct from one another. The classic stripes worn by both teams obviously appeal to my traditionalist ways. Despite both teams wearing classic stripes their jerseys were really quite different. They also represented the styles of both teams very well. In menacing black uniforms were the big bad Bruins and in more regal or finer uniforms were the artistic offensive minded Oilers.
1988 was the year of the infamous "5 game sweep" as the Oilers won the Cup. Game 4 was played in the Boston Garden which had a power failure in the middle of the game. That game was abandoned and restarted in Edmonton. If memory serves me correctly, scoring from the abandoned game was still counted. This is because if the series required a Game 6 back in Boston (Game 5 would have been in Edmonton) they would have restarted from the point that the original Game 4 was stopped at. So Game 4 would have become Game 6. The Oilers lost only 2 games throughout the entire playoffs that year and Gretzky had 43 points in those games!!!!
You'll notice in the picture above that there are ads on the boards. However if you review footage on YouTube the boards are empty. In Edmonton there were only ads on the boards on the side that did not face the stationary camera. Board ads became common place the next season. This was also the last Stanley Cup Final where teams did not wear a Stanley Cup Final patch which lead to my choosing of the 88 Final instead of the 1990 Final.

QUICK EDIT: on the Golden Blades page, the team was called the Raiders first, with intent to play at Nassau Coliseum before blocked out by the county and the Islanders. They moved to NJ to become the Knights.
But anyway, best looking final has to be 1983/1984. Clean cut blue and orange on both sides for two years in a row, though I favor 1983 for obvious reasons...
