Wednesday: Lizards and Penguins and Cougars OH MY!!!

Howdy and Happy Wednesday everyone!

First off... I'd like to answer Dylan's question from yesterday regarding his opinion on the best looking Stanley Cup......... Yes.

Ok, now onto my own personal favorite. I'll give you a biased and a non biased answer.

Biased answer. I would like to say it was this past Stanley Cup Final.

I've been a fan of the Lightning's branding since they unveiled their current logo and jersey set. And I've always loved the Blackhawks. This matchup provided the best contrast of any of the Hawks' finals appearances. 2010 and 13 the Hawks played Philly and Boston. Philly was a lot of orange which is close to red, and Boston wears a lot of black, which is also a big part of the Hawks scheme. I liked both home and away games mostly because of the crowds... Games in Chicago were a big red spectacle, and games in Tampa were blue as could be. I loved that.

Two that I'd like to mention though would be the 2003 Finals, because it was kind of cool to see the Mighty Ducks jade and eggplant playing in the finals against a decently solid Devils set....

And also, the 1996 Final...
Because it's so so so 90's.... and John Vanbiesbrouck...

Anyway, while you're probably disagreeing with those, go vote for stuff and also send in your Golden Blades entries.

COTW Sept 20-26 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
NY Golden Blades entries (due Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Speaking of... here's today's Golden Blades entries

Chris W.

Duncan L.

Phil B.

And because you've been so well behaved today, here's 5 concepts for you.

Jacksonville Lizard Kings Concepts - Brooks F.
The color scheme is unique and I'm a fan. The jerseys are pretty straightforward. Don't know that I would have been so pointy with the yoke but it all looks good. The font on the home and away doesn't really match the aesthetic, but it looks great on the alternate....
The font looks so much better on this jersey since it goes with the logo and overall look of the jersey more. I like the logo but I'm not too big on the jersey. I'm ok with the sleeve design, but not so much on the torso. I like that the logo is only outlined once in green, so it'd be nice to see that done throughout the jersey.

Home/Away Rating: 8/10
Alternate Rating: 7/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept - The Almighty Sock - Lucas D.
The Penguins would look so much better if they followed their sock design, as Lucas has shown off here. I don't think the yokes are necessary. I wish there was more gold too, but it's a pretty subtle nod to some of the team's first jerseys where white yokes were prominent. Interesting idea for a series, will improve a lot of looks, but I'm afraid that a lot of teams will end up looking very similar.

Rating: 8/10

Chicago Cougars Concept - Chris W.
The updated logos, despite being from other teams look nice, and show how a team today could adopt the Cougars' name and look hella dope. The striping is really interesting but I like it. Especially on the white jersey. The font is creative with the swipe marks, although, it's way overdone in the wordmark logo... not every letter in the word Cougars needs it. The vintage alternate seals the deal for me. It's a nice modern set with a jersey nodding at the teams' past.

Rating: 9/10

Calgary Flames Concept - Taylor R.
Taylor's recent concepts have been switching teams over to Adidas while cleaning up their look. This Flames set is a huge success. Getting rid of the unnecessary piping and flags. And it's Frolik on the back, so I'm a fan. I like how he found a way to mix in elements from the current alternate jersey. (font/shoulder patch) The one thing I don't care for is the white collar insert on the dark jersey, I'd say either red or black would look better. Let's hope when the Adidas deal kicks in the Flames do something like this.

Rating: 9/10 and a COTW Nom!

There you go. A days worth of HJC. Now it's time to get ready for bed so you can read tomorrow's post. Good night dears.

In retrospect, I probably should have went with a white and yellow collar on the home and went with a black insert. Just wanted to add more white into the collar and that blew over my head.

COTW nom to Chris W. Although the alternate isn't spectacular, the main set is killer.

Calm your trap Lucas, I can give you dozens of links to concepts that've followed the concepts of yours and Taylor's. You ain't first and you won't be last.

COTW to Taylor R.

Sorry, Lucas but that doesn't make any sense. Your Calgary concept was posted Sunday. There isn't any possible way I could have "copied" "your" design. Here's the link on CCSLC where I first posted it http://boards.sportslogos.net/topic/104946-fixing-the-nhl-colorado/page-2#entry2498464 20 days ago. Don't jump to conclusions.

Lucas I hope you're not trying to claim originality by comparing Taylor's work to yours because they're not that similar outside of the fact there's three colored striping.

Lucas Daitchman said...

That wasn't supposed to be negative! Just that we came up with the same type of design around the same time... Wasn't trying to say you copied it. Sorry about the confusion...
