2019 Winter Classic Logo Released

This morning, the NHL released the logo for the upcoming 2019 Winter Classic game that is being played at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana.

The base of the logo is a frosted shamrock, a nod to both the host Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the strong Irish heritage of the cities of Chicago and Boston.  On top of that is the traditional Winter Classic wordmark that we've come to expect from a WC logo, as well as the Bridgestone sponsorship logo and the NHL crest.  The final touch is a golden banner along the stem of the shamrock that announces the venue for the event.

This is one of the simplest Winter Classic logos that we've seen, and yet it gets the point across.  The uniformity of that Winter Classic wordmark has become a staple of the design and it makes the event easily identifiable.  The obligatory sponsorship logo doesn't detract from the design, and the banner at the bottom is a much simpler approach than trying to enshrine the venue in to the design.  The shamrock is a great way to celebrate both the host and the competitors, and is a simple, yet iconic, design that tells so much with so little.  While this isn't one of the more ambitious designs we've seen in recent years, it still looks pretty good, and it gets the job done.
