Tuesday: Rockin Roller Mayhem!
Hi everybody! Welcome back to another Tuesday post at HJC. If you couldn't tell by the title, I'm pretty pumped about our latest competition. I grew up in the 90's in Pittsburgh and while the Phantoms only lasted one season, it was pretty cool because they were such a hit that they had a lasting impact throughout the 90's on kids who watched them. I should know because my older brother was a die-hard Penguins and Phantoms fan and forced me and my little brother to play hockey in our basement with him. How we never broke the washer and dryer are beyond me.
Getting back to reality, we currently have the NHL playoffs going on (Yay) which I haven't been able to watch a single game because I don't have cable (Nay). Speaking of the playoff, Ryan has informed us writers that the playoff pool will be updated soon.
Also, it's that time of the post to remind you to vote. We have to polls to vote for this week; the COTW and the first quarter vote! Exciting I know.
On to the Concepts!
Negatives: doing a curved chest stripe makes the back numbers a little difficult to read and the TV numbers could be slightly bigger. they look a little small on the primary set.
Overall: 8/10
Negatives: a few mistakes on this set. The TV numbers are wrong. There should be more of the 8 showing on with the 1 on the sleeves rather than them being even. Also, you missed squaring off the back-right side of the alternate yoke. Also, While the black bottom of the white jersey balances out the black on the sleeves, I'd like to see the black at the bottom of the sleeves, but that's just a personal preference.
Overall:6.5/10
Negatives: Where's the red? This jersey set would stand out so much more if you used the alternate logo with the red and mixed in the vintage white. That way the color scheme would be different from other teams. Also, I would add in the Ohio state flag to this or the current primary as a shoulder patch.
Overall: 7.5/10
Negatives: While I think this jersey is perfect the way it is, I'd like to see a more subtle nod to the modern jersey. perhaps arch the nameplate, or add a slight drop shadow to the name.
Overall:9/10 COTW NOMINEE
Negatives: Why is the OHL patch on the alternate bigger htan the ones on the primary. Also, make the TV numbers in the yoke on the alternate dark blue so they can be more legible from a distance. As for the primary set, this color pallet is an eyesore. the blue on the black with the yellow accent stripping on a red jersey is just too much to take in at once. I will give that the away jersey is more tame but still, the color choices are crazy.
Overall: 6.5/10
Negatives: The white ends of the Penguins jersey aren't working on the yellow jersey with the black yoke. Also, the penguins logo could be bigger and both crest logos should be slightly moved up.
Overall: 6.5/10

On to the Concepts!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brooks Freeman- Guelph Storm
Positives: This gives me a old Anaheim ducks meets Carolina Hurricanes feel to it with the stripping similar to the Ducks and the colors and numbers Carolina. Overall, the design works well.Negatives: doing a curved chest stripe makes the back numbers a little difficult to read and the TV numbers could be slightly bigger. they look a little small on the primary set.
Overall: 8/10
Brooks Freeman- Hamilton Bulldogs
Positives: The traditional approach to the new color scheme was a good idea on this one Brooks. The traditional stripping on the dark gives me a Bruins feel while the White gives me a unique but pleasing twist to it. Also, bring in the vintage Hamilton Tigers logo and changing it to the bulldogs, then making a Hamilton Tigers tribute jersey was a great idea.Negatives: a few mistakes on this set.
Ryan Christensen- Columbus Blue Jackets
Positives: The traditional style of the jersey is something that the Blue Jackets need to go to so good job here. the simplicity of it makes it very pleasing to the eye.Negatives: Where's the red? This jersey set would stand out so much more if you used the alternate logo with the red and mixed in the vintage white. That way the color scheme would be different from other teams. Also, I would add in the Ohio state flag to this or the current primary as a shoulder patch.
Overall: 7.5/10
Taylor Roy- New York Rangers
Positives: I like this because you can tell that it looks close enough to the current blue jersey but at the same time you made enough changes to make it different. separating the red stripe from the white jersey bottom area was a good choice for this as was making a away style yoke.Negatives: While I think this jersey is perfect the way it is, I'd like to see a more subtle nod to the modern jersey. perhaps arch the nameplate, or add a slight drop shadow to the name.
Overall:9/10 COTW NOMINEE
Tyler Kostiuk- Erie Otters
Positives: The alternate is just a solid jersey and I'll leave it at that. As for the Primary set, adding that different color at the end of the yoke was a neat idea that works for this concept and the curved theme of the stripes works with the logo.Negatives: Why is the OHL patch on the alternate bigger htan the ones on the primary. Also, make the TV numbers in the yoke on the alternate dark blue so they can be more legible from a distance. As for the primary set, this color pallet is an eyesore. the blue on the black with the yellow accent stripping on a red jersey is just too much to take in at once. Tyler Meli-Skewis- Flyers vs Penguins Stadium Series
Positives: Yes to a yellow Penguins jersey. the stripping on the Flyers sleeves and the hem is really interesting, and the different color cuffs and hems on both jerseys give them a more traditional feel, somewhat uncommon for a stadium series jersey.Negatives: The white ends of the Penguins jersey aren't working on the yellow jersey with the black yoke. Also, the penguins logo could be bigger and both crest logos should be slightly moved up.
Overall: 6.5/10
Zeke Goldsmith-Michigan Wolverines
Positives: Your choice of combining the primary sleeve stripping and a former alternate jersey yoke works well overall. I could definitely see Michigan going for a design like this being that they have 3 sets of jerseys to choose from every year (might be slightly exaggerating).
Negatives: Very simple but looks really close to what they wear already and I'd like to see you push this design further. When I see this I think "Oh another jersey Michigan is adding to it's already large collection" not "I'd really like to see them wear that today!" But, again, very good design.
Overall: 8.5/10
