Wednesday: California Love (and a Washington)
Sorry for the late post everyone. Without myself having a normal schedule for writing these posts, and some things going on at school, I completely forgot I was supposed to fill in for today's post. In fact, it's 4:30 right now as I'm writing this intro ... so ... yeah. Completely my fault. Quick recap of my thoughts on a few of the things released this week:
Whalers: The one throwback that I'm not groaning about at seeing another throwback. Beautiful.
Islanders: Thank god it's something original. It's not great, it's not bad. Considering the leak was accurate I have already talked about this on a podcast at some point.
One more thing: Some of you already know this and follow it, but I (relatively) recently created an account on Instagram to showcase my jersey collection, which you can find under the username bpcjerseys. I've mentioned on the blog before that I celebrate the beginning of the NHL season by wearing a jersey every day in October. Except now my collection is so large that I have to stretch from September to November. So, as I continue to wear a jersey every day until just about (American) Thanksgiving, I'll be posting what I wear almost every day. Go check it out if you like seeing other's collections!
Alright, considering what time it is already here, let's just move on to the bulk of today's post.
---------------------
This week voting wise we have the COTW vote as per usual, and the entry period for the Buffalo Sabres redesign has begun, and will end next Friday. So you still have a fair bit of time to get some entries in. The Jersey Nerds podcast is still going strong, with a new episode that came out yesterday, where Ryan and Sean go over the Whalers jersey and some (non-jersey) NHL predictions for the upcoming season, along with the normal segments, so go give it a listen!
---------------------
Adam G. - Washington Wizards
With today's sole non-Californian concept, we have a continuation of Adam's NBA crossover series.
+This is pretty much the perfect crossover of the Wizards brand over to a hockey jersey, at least with the arm pattern. It matches perfectly with their basketball jerseys, as well as the logo.
-While this option would have been less creative, I would be intrigued to see how a yoke/chest stripe design would look, directly matching their basketball jerseys
-I also would have liked to see how the road would look if you directly color swapped the home and matched their white basketball jerseys: a red upper arm fill with a blue stripe below.
+However, that may have thrown the color balance off with the blue pants, so you may have made the right choice here.
-I think you should swap the hem styles here and have it match the arms. From the bottom, go blue-red-white, which would end up being only 2 stripes on the road jersey.
-I'd also move that same design over to the socks, or keep them consistent in some way.
+I really like the way that pant design moves over to a hockey jersey
-I think it would look a bit better if that bottom didn't flare out, though.
-Lose the pentagon on the collar. Just make it blue to combine with the outer ring.
Overall: 7.5/10
Ben S. - San Diego Gulls
+Love the orange primary jersey. Love it.
+Good color balancing in general for the most part, especially on the orange and black jerseys.
-The white jersey could use a tad more orange.
-I think the stripes could use to be a bit thicker, not by much, but they're really thin as is.
+The alternate is a great way to bring in Anaheim's branding.
-Not huge on the Ducks' logo placement. Just keep it as a shoulder patch.
Overall: 7.5/10
Ben S. - San Jose Barracuda
+I love the design for the home jersey on this one. Unique while tying into the team's and the parent team's branding, with good color balance as well.
-The design looks fine on the road jersey ... but I just can't get behind having the primary color (after white) be black. I think I know what you were going for, but switching the teal and black would make a world of difference.
+I love the placement of the Sharks logo on this one.
+The alternate actually works really well with contrasting black arms on a teal base.
-I think it would have been a decent opportunity to change things up from the primary and go with a black jersey, though.
Overall: 8/10
TC Moore - Los Angeles Chargers
+Boy, is their color scheme gorgeous. And you took full advantage of it. The colors are balanced perfectly as well.
-I like the striping pattern, but it would look a bit better if you removed the thin stripe between the cuff and stripes. It's just a tad too busy as it is.
-I'm not huge on the number font either. It may be just because I usually don't tend to like extremely modern ones.
+Good logo choice though.
+That alternate is beautiful. I especially love the yellow pants.
Overall: 8.5/10 and my COTW nomination
TC Moore - San Francisco 49ers
+The 49ers have a pretty classic uniform design (I think, I'm not as knowledgable on football jerseys), but translating them directly over wouldn't have been great for the color balance, so I think you made a good decision to change things up a bit.
+You also kept the general essence of their regular uniforms in this one, which makes it work even better.
-I think the way you did it though has the stripes a bit too small and makes things a bit too busy. It may work if the stripes were at a larger scale, but as it is they're just a bit too small. Maybe it's just the pixels of a computer rather than actual fabric.
+Great secondary logo choice.
+That alternate is a great fauxback design as well. And while I don't like the secondary logo on that one, it fits perfectly.
-I'm not feeling the gold pants though. I don't think this color works as well having the entire uniform in that color.
Overall: 8/10

And that's all for today! I apologize again for the lateness. I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you all again ... sometime.
