NWHL Uniforms Released for 2018-19

With the Minnesota Whitecaps coming into the National Women's Hockey League this season, you knew there would be a couple of uniform updates coming, but surprisingly there are less than usual. In all three years of the league's existence, each of the four original teams had new uniforms for every season. This year, only 3 teams have new uniforms, and one of them due to both expansion and the associated rebrand. All images that follow are from their respective teams' Facebook.

We start in Buffalo with arguably the biggest improvement in the league, the Beauts unveiled this beaut of a jersey (while being the only team not to provide a graphic look at their jersey, since the other four are now available for purchase, so here's Emily Pfalzer instead).

Last year the Beauts jersey had a hem stripe with no arm stripes, instead sublimating blue stars all along the yoke and down the sleeves, similar to a full sleeve yoke while keeping the standard template. Now the stars are sublimated into black striping surrounded by white stripes separated by the base blue. An interesting note for this jersey in the unveiling of a new alternate logo on the left shoulder, while the crown takes the other one again.

The logo is a modified seal of the city of Buffalo, with bolts coming out from the circle like wheel spokes and stars in between. Great addition to a great uniform. Will be paired with solid black gear.

The newcomers were the first team to unveil a new uniform: Minnesota.

The 'Caps unveiled a uniform with circled waves sublimated in blue on the shoulders of a black jersey. The jersey itself has no other striping elsewhere. That seems mildly disappointing. The only other unique aspect of this jersey is that it has a completely different number font from the rest of the league, a thick round font that fits with the branding better than traditional block numbering. Still lacking a bit for my tastes.

With Minnesota going black, that forces Boston to go yellow this season, wearing a yellow base color for the first time since their inaugural season in 2015

Boston goes to a design trend we haven't seen since the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy and the 2007 World Juniors (and that crazy USA-Canada shootout with Carey Price, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. among other big names): vertical stripes. The stripes are accompanied by a shoulder sleeve logo that will feature under the numbers for some reason. The jersey is completed with solid black side panels and underarms. Easily the worst of the five uniforms this year.

The Connecticut Whale and the reigning Isobel Cup Champion Metropolitan Riveters are unchanged. with blue gear accompanying the Whale and black gear for the Riveters.

So this is what the NWHL will look like this year, as only on jersey will belong to each team instead of a home and away jersey for each team. Color on color will frequent the league even more now, so long as Connecticut is on a bye week. What do you think? Do you like the color on color? Are there any tweaks you'd add, besides completely re-doing Boston's jersey? Let us know in the comments!
